Introduction:
Introduction:
the Gospel is the good news. The good news that through Jesus Christ men can be reconciled to God by grace. The means of that reconciliation is his sacrificial death on the cross.
Now this is a very interesting thing, this good news is wonderful, we love it, it is the single greatest event of our lives. And so you would think that salvation or “God’s plan of salvation” would start with that, right out of the gate, but interestingly it does not, in fact on the 5 brick path, the gospel is only brick 3!
Why? Because the sinful man does not see the gospel as the saved man does.
For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God.
The good news, the great news, the best news is totally unappealing and foolish to the sinner.
The Very Person who needs the good news.
Everyone Needs Grace
Everyone Needs Grace
Salvation is not just for some and not for others. Its not just some people who need salvation.
But the scripture hath concluded all under sin, that the promise by faith of Jesus Christ might be given to them that believe.
all under sin....
The conclusion is simple: No person, niether Jew or Gentile is without sin.
again:
First Step in Roman Road:
First Step in Roman Road:
For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;
Well so what? This is a big problem for everyone.
For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness;
Because everyone has sinned, on the day of judgment everyone will be found guilty, and everyone will be condemned.
As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one:
So surely to escape condemnation everyone will call to God for help? Right?
No.
There is a problem, the problem is that even though God says there is none that is righteous, mankind manufactures a type of righteousness.
He fabricates it by setting up his own standard of what is right and what is wrong. Its not a real righteousness at all, it has no weight or substance to anyone other than the person him/herself.
It’s called self-righteousness.
Most men will proclaim every one his own goodness:
But a faithful man who can find?
This is a serious issue. The only reason not everyone is a christian and free is because of self righteousness. “I don’t need a saviour” “Im a good person”.
Its like having the cure for a life threatening disease, but no one is willing to acknowledge that they have the disease. Its like throwing a life raft to a drowning man, but he ignores it because he is too proud to admit that he is drowning.
Self righteousness is fuelled by pride.
So this is a real problem. We have a people who are in desperate need of help, but are totally blind to their desperate need of help.
So what did God do?
Now we know that what things soever the law saith, it saith to them who are under the law: that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God. Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin.
The law.
The law.
The law silences the excuses. it strips us of our false self righteousness and makes us see our sinful condition.
The Law shows man his diagnoses of death and makes him see the need of the cure.
“It is a favorite thing of infidels to set their own standard, to measure themselves by other people. But that will not do on the Day of Judgment. Now we will use God’s Law as a balance weight”. - DL Moody
What shall we say then? Is the law sin? God forbid. Nay, I had not known sin, but by the law: for I had not known lust, except the law had said, Thou shalt not covet.
The Law pops our bubble of false peace and shows us that in our hearts, we are not good people.
“The Law sets before us our wretched state by sin.” - Matthew Henry
It shows us ourselves not with our rose tinted glasses, but it shows us ourselves at we truly are in the sight of a holy and perfect God.
What do I mean?
Well lets look at the 10 Commandments:
1: You shall not lie
Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour.
How many lies? What do you call someone who tells lies?
2: you shall not steal
Thou shalt not steal.
Have you ever taken something that did not belong to you?
3: You shall not take God’s name in vain.
Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain; for the Lord will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain.
4: Adultry
Thou shalt not commit adultery.
Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not commit adultery: But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart.
So far The Law has shown us that we are: Lying, Thieving, blaspheming adulterers at heart.
The Law shows us our sinful condition, but it can do no more.
Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith.
The Law bring the sinner to that wonderful place of Godly sorrow. It bring them to the foot of the cross and it does so without any false promises. The law does not promise health or wealth. The Law only makes one promise:
Lawbreakers go to Hell.
But Jesus also makes a promise, and its not health or wealth either.
Jesus makes us a promise:
If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
Even this is step 3, we offer it now.
