Donald Grey Barnhouse, former pastor of Tenth Presbyterian Church in Philadelphia, once asked his nationwide CBS radio audience this question
What would Philadelphia look like if Satan took full control of the city?

If Satan took over Philadelphia, all the bars would be closed, pornography would be banished, and pristine streets would be filled with tidy pedestrians who smiled at each other.
There would be no swearing; the children would say, “Yes, sir!” and “No, mam!” and churches would be filled every Sunday … where Christ would not be preached.
He answered his question in the following manner.

You know, when we see those things, we rear up; we’re aware and we defend the Gospel.
The greatest danger of the Gospel has always been and continues to be a counterfeit gospel.
It’s a gospel that doesn't actually need Christ.
And what's dangerous about this is its subtlety, that it exists with the same language; it exists in the same location; it exists amongst committed religious people.

We are like those in our text.
We are religious yet we remain void of redemption.
Our religion has been successful at achieving decisions but it has not produced disciples.
Bible’s permeate residence in every apartment complex, subdivision, cull-desc, and condo but those who reside in those dwellings remain untouched because this pervasive book remains untouched.
Churches saturate our landscape with styles of worship as various as the restaurants available for Sunday lunch.
Yet saturation has not led to transformation.
Why?
There is a popular saying that I believe best explains; “Practice doesn’t make perfect.
Perfect practice makes perfect.”
Churches alone will not transform communities but churches with the true gospel can and do.
Sermons calling it listeners to morality but not the Messiah will produce a form of godliness with no power.
It will shape a white washed tomb filled with dead man’s bones.
