Introduction:
On July 27th of this year the spectacular astronomical sight will grace our Eastern Hemisphere, a Blood Moon.
“A blood moon is the definition used when the moon appears bright, large and reddish in colour, and it only occurs when there is a full moon.
The blood moon is the result of a total lunar eclipse, which is when the moon passes directly behind earth and into its shadow.”
The upcoming blood moon is not only of interest to astronomers and star-gazers, however. It has also drawn the attention of end times speculators and pastors.
Christian John Hagee and Mark Blitz explained that this blood moon is part of a series of unique astronomical events which signal what the Bible predicts in Acts 2:20 and Revelation 6:12.
According to Mirror UK, Hagee and Blitz particularly point to what they call the “tetrad”--four consecutive lunar eclipses which began in April 2014 with six full moons in between.
So the question is asked...
Is the Upcoming July Blood Moon a Sign of the End Times?
Blood Moon is mentioned only 3x’s in scripture...
20 the sun shall be turned to darkness
and the moon to blood,
before the day of the Lord comes, the great and magnificent day.
31 The sun shall be turned to darkness, and the moon to blood, before the great and awesome day of the Lord comes.
The reference in Acts and Joel are speaking of the same event. That is why Peter and the Holy Spirit reference it.
It would be helpful to look at the context of the passage...
17 “ ‘And in the last days it shall be, God declares,
that I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh,
and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy,
and your young men shall see visions,
and your old men shall dream dreams;
18 even on my male servants and female servants
in those days I will pour out my Spirit, and they shall prophesy.
19 And I will show wonders in the heavens above
and signs on the earth below,
blood, and fire, and vapor of smoke;
20 the sun shall be turned to darkness
and the moon to blood,
before the day of the Lord comes, the great and magnificent day.
21 And it shall come to pass that everyone who calls upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.’
This is a reference to the Day of Pentecost that is happening...
1 When the day of Pentecost arrived, they were all together in one place.
Peter endowed with the power of the Holy Spirit tells the people what is going on this Pentecost day...
14 But Peter, standing with the eleven, lifted up his voice and addressed them: “Men of Judea and all who dwell in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and give ear to my words. 15 For these people are not drunk, as you suppose, since it is only the third hour of the day. 16 But this is what was uttered through the prophet Joel:
Peter let’s us know what Joel was referring to. Which are the events of Pentecost in AD 33.
So we have accounted for for of the three passages with the blood moon in it.
Let’s take a look at the third...
12 When he opened the sixth seal, I looked, and behold, there was a great earthquake, and the sun became black as sackcloth, the full moon became like blood,
Remember context is key, it is very easy to take one passage or part of a passage and make it mean anything you want.
Let’s start with the meaning a very big clue given to us about Revelation and when it’s events are suppose to happen.
1 The revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave him to show to his servants the things that must soon take place. He made it known by sending his angel to his servant John, 2 who bore witness to the word of God and to the testimony of Jesus Christ, even to all that he saw. 3 Blessed is the one who reads aloud the words of this prophecy, and blessed are those who hear, and who keep what is written in it, for the time is near.
So the events that were revealed to John were events that must soon take place and the time was near.
Armed with that info let’s go back to Rev. 6 and look at it’s context...
12 When he opened the sixth seal, I looked, and behold, there was a great earthquake, and the sun became black as sackcloth, the full moon became like blood, 13 and the stars of the sky fell to the earth as the fig tree sheds its winter fruit when shaken by a gale. 14 The sky vanished like a scroll that is being rolled up, and every mountain and island was removed from its place. 15 Then the kings of the earth and the great ones and the generals and the rich and the powerful, and everyone, slave and free, hid themselves in the caves and among the rocks of the mountains, 16 calling to the mountains and rocks, “Fall on us and hide us from the face of him who is seated on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb, 17 for the great day of their wrath has come, and who can stand?”
The beginning of this passage sounds just like another event...
45 Now from the sixth hour there was darkness over all the land until the ninth hour. 46 And about the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, “Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani?” that is, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” 47 And some of the bystanders, hearing it, said, “This man is calling Elijah.”
51 And behold, the curtain of the temple was torn in two, from top to bottom. And the earth shook, and the rocks were split.
54 When the centurion and those who were with him, keeping watch over Jesus, saw the earthquake and what took place, they were filled with awe and said, “Truly this was the Son of God!”
The sixth seal (12-17) describes cosmic disturbances and the despair of those trying to hide from God's wrath.
Is this scene depicting the end of time (cf. 2Pe 3:7-12)?
The language is reminiscent of that describing God's judgment upon
Babylon (Isa 13:1-22)
and Samaria (Hos 10:7-8).
Jesus used similar language to warn people of the impending destruction of Jerusalem (Lk 23:28-30).
Therefore I believe it refers to judgment upon unbelieving Israel for persecuting God's people in the 1st century.
The guilty would not escape the Lamb's wrath!
Who would stand in that day? It is a judgement that comes upon men because of the events that Jesus fulfills.
So the Blood Moon upcoming of July 27th is not a sign of the end of the world or the beginning of a new dispensation.
The Blood Moon of scripture has been fulfilled and the current and upcoming Blood Moon events are lunar occurences which will continue to happen until the Lord comes again.
Here is How to Escape the Judgment
God’s Plan of Salvation
Hear - Believe - Confess - Repent - Be Baptized - Remain Faithful
17 So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.
6 And without faith it is impossible to please him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him.
32 So everyone who acknowledges me before men, I also will acknowledge before my Father who is in heaven, 33 but whoever denies me before men, I also will deny before my Father who is in heaven.
3 No, I tell you; but unless you repent, you will all likewise perish.
38 And Peter said to them, “Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
10 Do not fear what you are about to suffer. Behold, the devil is about to throw some of you into prison, that you may be tested, and for ten days you will have tribulation. Be faithful unto death, and I will give you the crown of life.
