The witness was a proud lady who had lost the bloom of youth quite some time ago. The young lawyer thinking it would be to his advantage to get her rattled said:  “And now, madam, I must ask you a rather personal question. How old are you?”

            “Young man,” she replied, “the judge just instructed you that we could have no hearsay evidence, and I don’t remember being born.  All my knowledge is hearsay.”
