Zechariah 9 - The King is Coming

Opening Illustration: Do you remember as a child the excitement of when you parents were away for a trip and they were coming back home and the excitement you had for their return. Now, you know as well as I do that excitement was because of something that they had gotten you on the trip.

I remember one time, was for me was the excitement of my grandparents coming. Grandpa had went to the auction and got me a prize and that most of the time meant something good. Man, we would look out the kitchen window of the house that looked down the road and just watch and waited to see that Brown Chrysler coming down the road. Grandpa bought me a remote control car wired. It looked like the back to the future car. The front lights opened. It was nice.

But I almost remember times that I did want to see my momma or my daddy come home. One time, I did something to one of my sister. I believe we were at Food Lion and I slipped up and said a bad word in front of my sister we were fighting over the toy and candy machines and the front door. She said you just wait til we get home I am going to tell momma and Daddy. I remember I went home. Went into my room and shut the door and got in the closet. Because I knew that there was that judgment was coming. I remember it was either that time or another. Mom told me to go to my room and wait for Daddy to get home. And I remember, hearing his foot steps coming down that hall on those parkay hard wood floors. And I felt that my heart sank with every step.

Attention: Listen to me this morning, The King is Coming and there are some that have been living their whole lives in anticipation of His coming and what joy will fill their heart when Jesus splits those clouds and comes to get his children.

But there are those, who have been living disobedience lives right now and there is dread and fear at his coming. This morning, as we look at the Return of the King I want you to examine your readiness.

Two Components of the King’s Return

Salvation - save the righteous

Judgment for the ungodly

A Now and Future fulfillment.

Much what Zechariah would prophesy would be that God was going to fulfill for them in the soon future but some of the prophesy had a future fulfillment. Much of what we studied last week is believed by much scholars and pastor to be fulfilled in the millennial reign of Christ. But there must of have been some fulfillment for the Jews of that day because he called them to strength their hand now. In today’s passage we are going to see what throughout today passage that the Lord gives prophecy that would be fulfilled in the near future to increase Israel confident that he would fulfill his word in the end.

Oracle - is best translated as burden. It comes from the root word meaning to “to lift up” or “to bear” hence something that is heavy or a burden. It occurs 60 times in OT and it unusually means a burden opposed by a master. However, in prophecy a “burden” is a declaration of judgment involving catastrophic event that is to come.
