The Holy Spirit directs and empowers believers in their missionary tasks, bearing witness to Jesus Christ and preparing the hearts of men and women to respond to him in faith

The Holy Spirit Empowers us as Missionaries (We've got a Light in the Sky)

This is the fulfillment of
Were the apostles still expecting a political Messiah?
"restore the Kingdom to Israel. This is not the same thing as the KoG
Have we been sent to Jerusalem, Judea or Samaria? Why did you pick that one?
Jesus say we have power to witness.
dynamis: The power to exert force in performing some function
dýnamis, the most important word in the group, means “ability,” then “possibility,” then “power” both physical and intellectual or spiritual.
dynamo: a generator, a forceful energetic individual
dynamometer: an instrument for measuring mechanical force.
For this reason the witness of his disciples is that God anointed Jesus with the Holy Spirit and with power ().
Christ's power is God's power
It is the power of Christ’s own presence by the Spirit (cf. ; ). A special endowment of power takes place at Pentecost which leads to healing as well as preaching in power
A community that rests in God’s saving power is the goal ().
God rest ye merry, Gentlemen
Rescued from Satan’s power, yet still beset by perils, they know the power of Christ to protect and preserve. They are guarded by God’s power through faith ()
What is this power grounded in?
All Christian ministry depends on the activity of the Spirit in the minister and in the ones ministered to.
The Holy Spirit's power and witness is the theme of Acts
We need power to be effective witnesses
He directs people to special witnessing situations ( ) and forbids them to go to some places they want to go ( ). He calls people to their special mission () and sends them on their way ( ). Finally, he directs the church to important doctrines relating to the mission of the church ( ).27 The Christian mission and ministry, then, can only be done in the power of the Spirit.
So whoever we are and whatever we do for God, our great desire should be to be filled with God’s Spirit so that our work will spring from his resulting power
“The church that lives for itself will die by itself.” Swiss theologian Emil Brunner once wrote, “A church exists by mission as fire exists by burning.”
In view of the urgency of Jesus’ commission, we should all seek to be Great Commission Christians50 and endeavor to have all Christian organizations and churches to be Great Commission movements.51 We should constantly live under the influence of our mission, so that we are willing to pay whatever price is required in order to reach the lost. Mission, of course, includes involvement across the street and around the globe. It is the responsibility of Christian leaders first to burn with passion themselves for mission and to pay the price of such commitment (see ); then, out of the credibility won from such passionate commitment, they must constantly keep the vision of mission before the people they lead. Fernando, Ajith. Acts. The NIV Application Commentary. Grand Rapids, MI: Zondervan Publishing House, 1998.

The Holy Spirit Gifts Missionaries (Don't Need No Phone At All)

Have you ever taken a spiritual gifts survey? If so what are your gifts? Do you agree with the results?
What was going on in the Corinthian Church to make Paul write this?
Paul has been distressed that the congregation of believers is rent with schisms
What gifts are going to help you this week, or have already helped you?
How can diversity/gifts divide a church?
What does verse 3 mean in your own words?
Paul is actually addressing speaking in tongues
Paul asserts that when a person speaks by the Spirit, the content is edifying, not blasphemous; it affirms that Jesus is Lord.
What does this text tell us about unity?
What does the statement "Jesus is Lord" meant to you?
What is a manifestation in relation to the Spirit?
Why is it not possible to be a successful missionary community if the community is divided?
So against that background Paul bluntly simplifies by saying in v. that the point of charismata is to help or to serve the community. Paul Sampley
NOTES
to each one Emphasizes the diversity in gifts distributed among believers (v. ). These gifts reveal the activity of the Spirit within the church community. Paul’s emphasis is on the community as a whole, so he is not indicating that every single person has his or her own gift; rather, each person has multiple gifts and often shares the same gifts with others.

-10 The Holy Spirit Sends Missionaries (She sends a Cable Coming in From Above)

Why do we come to Red Bird?
Would you have answered that way before reading this? Why? why not?
NOTES
Paul’s second missionary journey (circa ad 49–51) takes him further into areas that were primarily Gentile (non-Jewish). This passage narrates how Paul’s dependence on the Holy Spirit takes him and his companions to Macedonia.
The narrative provides no reasoning for this—outside of showing that God had other plans (vv. )—nor does it explain how this occurred. This shows, though, that Paul and his companions listen to the Holy Spirit’s leading and do as the Spirit directs.
The Holy Spirit is responsible for the plotline of church’s mission, leading sometimes by divine speech and at other times by heavenly vision. In this case, the Spirit directs Paul by blocking doors in Asia rather than by opening them Robert W. Wall
Luke’s earlier use of the verb κωλύω (kōlyō, “forbidden/kept from”) in Acts (; ; ) makes the positive point that God’s redemptive plans, worked out in the church’s mission, cannot be frustrated (see )
Paul had one door closed and another opened by the Holy Spirit. Have you seen something similar while working on your project?
What have you had to be sub missive about so far this week?

The Holy Spirit Creates Success For Missionaries (She Sends Her Comfort Comin' in From Above)

Have you, your group ben successful this week based on your Definition?
Would you like to change your definition?
How did the Holy Spirit help you to be successful?
Have you seen the "gates of hell"this week? How so?
the gates of Hades In this instance, this likely refers to the realm of the dead in general (the underworld)—similar to the Hebrew word she’ol. Jesus and His disciples are at Caesarea Philippi, located at the base of Mount Hermon. This region is affiliated in ancient Near Eastern, Jewish, and Greek literature with the gateway to the underworld, the gods, and other spiritual beings. The ot also affiliates the region, called Bashan in the ot, with an evil giant clan and idolatry (; ,; ). Jesus seems to be saying that through His power, the Church will overcome the powers of evil and death itself
Caesarea Philippi, about twenty miles north of the Sea of Galilee, had earlier been the site of a Baal cultic center, then in Hellenistic times became known as Paneas because the god Pan had been worshiped in the famous grotto and spring there, but was renamed by Herod the Great after he built there a temple to Caesar Augustus.
Since the original Greek text lacks the preposition “against” in the verse, the phrase may be literally rendered “the gates of Hades shall not withstand it.” Given this, the verse indicates that the gates of Hades, the realm of death and evil, will not be able to withstand the advance of the Church.
One of the achievements of contemporary ecumenical scholarship, however, is that both Protestant and Roman Catholic scholars generally agree that the original meaning of the text is that Jesus builds the church on Peter as the foundation (contrary to previous Protestant views) rather than on Peter’s confession or Peter’s faith, and that the position Peter held was unique and unrepeatable (contrary to previous Roman Catholic views)--There is now a general consensus, Orthodox, Catholic and Protestant
To begin with it looked as though Jesus was simply endorsing their dreams. If Peter had declared that Jesus was the Messiah, Jesus had a word for Peter as well. The name ‘Peter’, or, in his native Aramaic, ‘Cephas’, means ‘rock’ or ‘stone’. If Peter was prepared to say that Jesus was the Messiah, Jesus was prepared to say that, with this allegiance, Peter would himself be the foundation for his new building. Just as God gave Abram the name Abraham, indicating that he would be the father of many nations (), so now Jesus gives Simon the new name Peter, the Rock.
