2 Chronicles 7:14 ESV
if my people who are called by my name humble themselves, and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and heal their land.
1 Timothy 2:1–2 ESV
First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people, for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way.

God’s Spirit transforms His people to share His moral character and empowers them to fulfill His purposes

THE HOLY SPIRIT BRINGS MEANING

Genesis 1:1–2 ESV
In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.
The very moment
we open the Scriptures, God’s Holy Word to us, we immediately see the Spirit of God in action. Not 10, 20 verses later, one chapter, one book later.
Is God telling us something?
God the Father had the Third Person of the Trinity be singled out in creation in this account
We need the HS in our lives, in the church.
Not by might, now by power...
Earth’s condition
Earth was without form and void and darkness ...
Formless, Emptiness and Darkness
No shape, nothing on the inside, dark all over
Does this describe our lives? Nothing’s taking shape, empty on the inside, filled with darkness, oppression, no hope.
Here comes hope!
And the Spirit of God was hovering over.
When HS hovers/broods over you, That which was without shape takes shape, which was empty becomes filled, which was dark, light shines through.

THE HOLY SPIRIT GIVES ABILITY

: 1-
Exodus 31:1–5 ESV
The Lord said to Moses, “See, I have called by name Bezalel the son of Uri, son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah, and I have filled him with the Spirit of God, with ability and intelligence, with knowledge and all craftsmanship, to devise artistic designs, to work in gold, silver, and bronze, in cutting stones for setting, and in carving wood, to work in every craft.
Ability, intelligence, knowledge.
The God who created the universe and mankind is able by His HS to gift individuals with the innate gifting to do what He needs done.
Each one of us have gifts and talents.
Youths: Cecilia, Okege, Josiah, Joshua, Christine.
The differences between spiritual gifts and talents:
A talent is the result of genetics and/or training, while a spiritual gift is the result of the power of the Holy Spirit.
A talent can be possessed by anyone, Christian or non-Christian, while spiritual gifts are only possessed by Christians.
While both talents and spiritual gifts should be used for God’s glory and to minister to others, spiritual gifts are focused on these tasks, while talents can be used entirely for non-spiritual purposes.
Examples:
Spiritual gifts: Leadership, prophecy, healing, apostleship, teaching, service, giving, mercy, hospitality, exhortation, evangelism, faith, administration, pastor, intercession/prayer, discernment, encouragement, wisdom, and knowledge of the Word, etc.
Talent: Athleticism, music, art, an eye for photography, public speaking, cooking, fishing, money management, acting, storytelling, woodworking, and sewing.
Both of these can be developed.

THE HOLY SPIRIT GIVES POWER

Judges 6:11–16 ESV
Now the angel of the Lord came and sat under the terebinth at Ophrah, which belonged to Joash the Abiezrite, while his son Gideon was beating out wheat in the winepress to hide it from the Midianites. And the angel of the Lord appeared to him and said to him, “The Lord is with you, O mighty man of valor.” And Gideon said to him, “Please, my lord, if the Lord is with us, why then has all this happened to us? And where are all his wonderful deeds that our fathers recounted to us, saying, ‘Did not the Lord bring us up from Egypt?’ But now the Lord has forsaken us and given us into the hand of Midian.” And the Lord turned to him and said, “Go in this might of yours and save Israel from the hand of Midian; do not I send you?” And he said to him, “Please, Lord, how can I save Israel? Behold, my clan is the weakest in Manasseh, and I am the least in my father’s house.” And the Lord said to him, “But I will be with you, and you shall strike the Midianites as one man.”

Jud 6.11-16
Midianites were oppressing Israel
Were in hiding
Fear and doubt prevailing
Gideon: inferior, insecure, weak, powerless
Judges 6:34 ESV
But the Spirit of the Lord clothed Gideon, and he sounded the trumpet, and the Abiezrites were called out to follow him.
Judges 6.
With 300 men, Gideon was able to pull off an amazing victory over Midian.
Acts 16:31 ESV
And they said, “Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved, you and your household.”
How did it happen? By the power of the HS.
But for raw physical power, we have even a greater example

Jud. 14.6

And behold, a young lion came toward him roaring. 6 Then the Spirit of the LORD rushed upon him, and although he had nothing in his hand, he tore the lion in pieces as one tears a young goat.

6 Then the Spirit of the LORD rushed upon him, and although he had nothing in his hand, he tore the lion in pieces as one tears a young goat

Judges 14:6 ESV
Then the Spirit of the Lord rushed upon him, and although he had nothing in his hand, he tore the lion in pieces as one tears a young goat. But he did not tell his father or his mother what he had done.

19 And the Spirit of the LORD rushed upon him, and he went down to Ashkelon and struck down thirty men of the town

Judges 14:19 ESV
And the Spirit of the Lord rushed upon him, and he went down to Ashkelon and struck down thirty men of the town and took their spoil and gave the garments to those who had told the riddle. In hot anger he went back to his father’s house.

Then the Spirit of the LORD rushed upon him, and the ropes that were on his arms became as flax that has caught fire, and his bonds melted off his hands.

You may feel weak, unable to accomplish the tasks facing you but God is here to help.
If God has placed a dream, a passion in your heart, He will give you the ability to get it done.

THE HOLY SPIRIT CHANGES HEARTS

Israel was looking for a king and God had selected a young man, Saul.
AS he was searching for some missing animals, he met Samuel the judge/leader at that time
Samuel said:
1 Samuel 10:5–10 ESV
After that you shall come to Gibeath-elohim, where there is a garrison of the Philistines. And there, as soon as you come to the city, you will meet a group of prophets coming down from the high place with harp, tambourine, flute, and lyre before them, prophesying. Then the Spirit of the Lord will rush upon you, and you will prophesy with them and be turned into another man. Now when these signs meet you, do what your hand finds to do, for God is with you. Then go down before me to Gilgal. And behold, I am coming down to you to offer burnt offerings and to sacrifice peace offerings. Seven days you shall wait, until I come to you and show you what you shall do.” When he turned his back to leave Samuel, God gave him another heart. And all these signs came to pass that day. When they came to Gibeah, behold, a group of prophets met him, and the Spirit of God rushed upon him, and he prophesied among them.
1 sam. 10. 5-10
The Spirit of God came upon him
His heart was changed
He prophesied
God still does that today. He is able to change our hearts.
Unfortunately, Samuel became full of himself, was disobedient to God and lost the kingdom.
But there was a little shepherd boy who got God’s attention. God went to work again.
God desires to use you for His work but He will not depend on you only.

THE HOLY SPIRIT ANOINTS FOR SERVICE

1 Samuel 16:1 ESV
The Lord said to Samuel, “How long will you grieve over Saul, since I have rejected him from being king over Israel? Fill your horn with oil, and go. I will send you to Jesse the Bethlehemite, for I have provided for myself a king among his sons.”
Samuel went, had all of Jesse’s sons parade before him but none were chosen.
Eventually David was sent for. Wasn’t among the top nominees.
1 Samuel 16:1–2 ESV
The Lord said to Samuel, “How long will you grieve over Saul, since I have rejected him from being king over Israel? Fill your horn with oil, and go. I will send you to Jesse the Bethlehemite, for I have provided for myself a king among his sons.” And Samuel said, “How can I go? If Saul hears it, he will kill me.” And the Lord said, “Take a heifer with you and say, ‘I have come to sacrifice to the Lord.’

For the LORD sees not as man sees: man looks on the outward appearance, but the LORD looks on the heart.”

1 Samuel 16:12–13 ESV
And he sent and brought him in. Now he was ruddy and had beautiful eyes and was handsome. And the Lord said, “Arise, anoint him, for this is he.” Then Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the midst of his brothers. And the Spirit of the Lord rushed upon David from that day forward. And Samuel rose up and went to Ramah.
1 sam.16.12-
The Holy Bible: English Standard Version. (2016). (1 Sa 16:7). Wheaton: Standard Bible Society.
The HS was so powerful upon David that:
1 Samuel 16:23 ESV
And whenever the harmful spirit from God was upon Saul, David took the lyre and played it with his hand. So Saul was refreshed and was well, and the harmful spirit departed from him.
