Intro. 1 Samuel records the crucial transition from the theocracy under the judges to monarchy under the kings.

1 Samuel covers the period of 94 yrs. from the birth of Samuel to the Death of Saul and is constructed around three men:

The account begins in the turbulent times of the judges when Eli is the judge-priest of Israel.
Corruption at Shiloh by Eli’s wicked sons lead to Israel’s defeat by the Philistines.
The ark of the covenant was lost to the Philistines.
The priesthood is disrupted by the death of Eli and his two sons.
The glory of the Lord departed from the tabernacle.
Samuel began to function as the last of the judges and the first of the order of the prophets. His prophetic ministry recorded in vs. 3-17 lead to:
Revival in Israel
Return of the Ark
Ruin of Philistine rule
Note three aspects of revival in this passage
