Ephesians 4:17–19 ESV
Now this I say and testify in the Lord, that you must no longer walk as the Gentiles do, in the futility of their minds. They are darkened in their understanding, alienated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them, due to their hardness of heart. They have become callous and have given themselves up to sensuality, greedy to practice every kind of impurity.
A callous heart occurs through a process
Begins with a hard-heart
-Our Natural State
Romans 3:10–12 ESV
as it is written: “None is righteous, no, not one; no one understands; no one seeks for God. All have turned aside; together they have become worthless; no one does good, not even one.”
-Each person is given a measure of faith
Romans 12:3 ESV
For by the grace given to me I say to everyone among you not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think with sober judgment, each according to the measure of faith that God has assigned.
b. A hard-heart leads to ignorance
b. A hard-heart leads to ignorance
2 Corinthians 4:4 ESV
In their case the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelievers, to keep them from seeing the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God.
Romans 1:25 ESV
because they exchanged the truth about God for a lie and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever! Amen.
c. Ignorance leads to a callous heart
i. not feeling
-pull of God, Conviction of Sin, Need for salvation
ii. By their own choice
-They have given themselves to sinfulness and their own desires.
iii. Defined by futility
-Pharoh as example
Exodus 8:15 ESV
But when Pharaoh saw that there was a respite, he hardened his heart and would not listen to them, as the Lord had said.
2. A Change is available
-We all once lived separated from God, but with Christ transformation occurs
Ezekiel 36:26 ESV
And I will give you a new heart, and a new spirit I will put within you. And I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh.
Ezekiel 36:26
3. Call to engage the hard-hearted
Romans 10:14–15 ESV
How then will they call on him in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in him of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without someone preaching? And how are they to preach unless they are sent? As it is written, “How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the good news!”
i. Knowledge of God will soften hearts
ii. Never Give Up
-A callous heart can be difficult to reach, but God is capable of anything.
