Freedom in Christ
Welcome
Intro - I struggled with this sermon because it is so close to Independence Day and sometimes I feel I am supposed to recognize and preach on that holiday
The problem with that is America is not mentioned in the Bible anywhere
So that creates a problem for sermons however the idea of freedom is in the Bible
By now you can probably already guess how the sermon will go if you have been in church for any amount of time but hang with him we are not going to start there
We are going to start in the Old Testament
In the Beginning just kidding
I want to pick up the story of history in Egypt
1 Now the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, 2 “Tell the sons of Israel to turn back and camp before Pi-hahiroth, between Migdol and the sea; you shall camp in front of Baal-zephon, opposite it, by the sea. 3 “For Pharaoh will say of the sons of Israel, ‘They are wandering aimlessly in the land; the wilderness has shut them in.’ 4 “Thus I will harden Pharaoh’s heart, and he will chase after them; and I will be honored through Pharaoh and all his army, and the Egyptians will know that I am the Lord.” And they did so. 5 When the king of Egypt was told that the people had fled, Pharaoh and his servants had a change of heart toward the people, and they said, “What is this we have done, that we have let Israel go from serving us?” 6 So he made his chariot ready and took his people with him; 7 and he took six hundred select chariots, and all the other chariots of Egypt with officers over all of them. 8 The Lord hardened the heart of Pharaoh, king of Egypt, and he chased after the sons of Israel as the sons of Israel were going out boldly. 9 Then the Egyptians chased after them with all the horses and chariots of Pharaoh, his horsemen and his army, and they overtook them camping by the sea, beside Pi-hahiroth, in front of Baal-zephon.
IF we know the story before this part real quick we know that the Israelites were in captivity in Egypt for so long the Egyptians had forgotten who Jospeh was
They were slaves and along comes Moses who explains to them that they are going to be a free people
This group of people had never been free so they do everything and eventually they walk out of the nation and God tells them to camp at a certain spot
Here comes the interesting part is that the Egyptians think they are crazy and want to go after them so they do
Now the Israelites begin to do what we would consider normal
Mind you they are walking with God doing what he had told them and they begin to panic
This is going to the set the stage for the rest of the sermon
The nation of Israel had to continue to fight for their freedom
This is the beginning of the nation of Israel and their Independence Day
Or at least that is what they thought, just like us
On July 2, 1776, the Congress secretly voted for independence from Great Britain. Two days later, on July 4, 1776, the final wording of the Declaration of Independence was approved, and the document was published. The first public reading of the Declaration of Independence was on July 8, 1776. Delegates began to sign the Declaration of Independence on August 2, 1776. In 1870, Independence Day was made an unpaid holiday for federal employees. In 1941, it became a paid holiday for them.
The first description of how Independence Day would be celebrated was in a letter from John Adams to his wife Abigail on July 3, 1776. He described "pomp and parade, with shows, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires, and illuminations" throughout the United States. However, the term "Independence Day" was not used until 1791.
The nation continued to fight for their independence
1 Saul was thirty years old when he began to reign, and he reigned forty two years over Israel. 2 Now Saul chose for himself 3,000 men of Israel, of which 2,000 were with Saul in Michmash and in the hill country of Bethel, while 1,000 were with Jonathan at Gibeah of Benjamin. But he sent away the rest of the people, each to his tent. 3 Jonathan smote the garrison of the Philistines that was in Geba, and the Philistines heard of it. Then Saul blew the trumpet throughout the land, saying, “Let the Hebrews hear.” 4 All Israel heard the news that Saul had smitten the garrison of the Philistines, and also that Israel had become odious to the Philistines. The people were then summoned to Saul at Gilgal. 5 Now the Philistines assembled to fight with Israel, 30,000 chariots and 6,000 horsemen, and people like the sand which is on the seashore in abundance; and they came up and camped in Michmash, east of Beth-aven. 6 When the men of Israel saw that they were in a strait (for the people were hard-pressed), then the people hid themselves in caves, in thickets, in cliffs, in cellars, and in pits. 7 Also some of the Hebrews crossed the Jordan into the land of Gad and Gilead. But as for Saul, he was still in Gilgal, and all the people followed him trembling. 8 Now he waited seven days, according to the appointed time set by Samuel, but Samuel did not come to Gilgal; and the people were scattering from him.
1 Samuel 13:1-8
Saul who the Bible describes as a handsome man is the first king of the nation because before that they had judges
He is the commander of the armies and gathers himself an army, because he understands as a king I need someone to defend our nation
They begin to battle the philistines and then we come upon something unique
Understand that from the formation of the nation they were always fighting for their freedom
Our country is no different from before we founded our country we have always fought for our independence
Since the revolutionary war
The Revolutionary War (1775-1783)War of 1812 (1812-1815)Mexican - American War (1846-1848)American Civil War (1861–1865)Spanish-American War (1898)World War I (1914-1918)World War II (1939-1945)Korean War (1950-1953)Vietnam War (1959-1979)Gulf War (1990-1991)Iraq War (2003-2011)
Other battles for the nation of Israel
Before there was Saul
12 But Moses’ hands were heavy. Then they took a stone and put it under him, and he sat on it; and Aaron and Hur supported his hands, one on one side and one on the other. Thus his hands were steady until the sun set.
The nation was fighting for their freedom, and they began to understand that with God there was freedom
After Saul there was Daniel
1 In the third year of the reign of Jehoiakim king of Judah, Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came to Jerusalem and besieged it. 2 The Lord gave Jehoiakim king of Judah into his hand, along with some of the vessels of the house of God; and he brought them to the land of Shinar, to the house of his god, and he brought the vessels into the treasury of his god.
The king was not following after God so God handed him and the nation over to another king who was not after God
The Nation also began to see that without God there is not freedom.
It’s no wonder when they list the kings they also list if they followed after God. Those that followed after God began to experience freedom because they were following after God
Church we are no different our nation is no different
but we do have freedom to celebrate
44 It was now about the sixth hour, and darkness fell over the whole land until the ninth hour, 45 because the sun was obscured; and the veil of the temple was torn in two. 46 And Jesus, crying out with a loud voice, said, “Father, into Your hands I commit My spirit.” Having said this, He breathed His last.
Jesus death and
3 days later He got up and walked out of the grave
This is the true Independence Day
When Jesus conquered sin and death that was and still is our Independence Day
4 for the Lord your God is the one who goes with you, to fight for you against your enemies, to save you.’
This still hold true for us today.
This is a promise that is still active for us. Now it is not saying that everything will be good and easy but it does say that the Lord goes to battle on our behalf.
Jesus is our victory and our freedom
10 “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly.
Our freedom is in Jesus and Jesus alone.
As you celebrate our country’s freedom this week. It should also remind you of your own freedom you have in Christ Jesus if you have a personal relationship with Jesus. If you do not have a personal relationship with Jesus then you do not have freedom in Christ, awe but you can
Closing
If you are here and you are like the nation that continues to fight for freedom instead resting in the freedom with have in Christ then now is the time to come forward and begin that relationship
Maybe you are here and you need to join this church or make some other decision
Maybe you need to spend sometime at the altar resting in the freedom you have in Christ.
