6 So when they had come together, they were asking Him, saying, “Lord, is it at this time You are restoring the kingdom to Israel?”
7 He said to them, “It is not for you to know times or epochs which the Father has fixed by His own authority;
8 but you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be My witnesses both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and even to the remotest part of the earth.”
You shall receive power. Strength or ability to do so.
I believe that the Holy Spirit is the most un-understood person in the bible.
To be my witness. to witness or be effective
I believe that the Holy Spirit is the most un-understood person in the bible.
There are many thing said about him that misrepresent who this person really is.
AW Tozer says everyone talks about God but God is extremely unpopular
I'll take it further like this, there is a doctor that lives across the street from you. You wave at him. You say hello. You acknowledge his existence but you never call upon him till you get sick.
We can't treat God that way He has not just created us He has not just died for us but his desire is to live in us and work through us.
You shall receive power when the Holy Spirit come upon you
We have to understand that the Holy Spirit is the power and with him we have no power to do any.
So he give us power to become a witness.
Because he is the witness
15 Whereof the Holy Ghost also is a witness to us: for after that he had said before, 16 This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, saith the Lord, I will put my laws into their hearts, and in their minds will I write them;
The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God:
,
Now the Holy spirit is the Witness and therefore is qualified to give us the power to be witnesses
Now a witness is someone who tells.
What does he tell?
What he has seen, heard, or experienced
im not a witness if im telling what someone else has experienced
So derrick you tell me that God created the heavens and the earth
Yes he did.
How can you say that? How do you know? You where not there when he did it. You didn't witness it.
Yes but I know somebody who was and he lives on the inside of me and he bears witness to me to.
Now look at Jesus' words in
john 15:26
“When the Helper comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, that is the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father, He will testify about Me,
Notice he will testify of or about me. Watch the result. You will testify
He will witness to you and you will witness for me
Now this is the issue with church.
We play to much with theology and never really become a witness
Hear we are fight over baptism and communion and such
Talking about the doctor across the street and never actually going over to visit him.
When the Helper come
the Holy Spirit, the Witness, is Here called the Help
Meaning the Holy Spirit will help us be witnesses
john
1 “I am the true vine, and My Father is the vinedresser.
2 “Every branch in Me that does not bear fruit, He takes away; and every branch that bears fruit, He prunes it so that it may bear more fruit.
3 “You are already clean because of the word which I have spoken to you.
4 “Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself unless it abides in the vine, so neither can you unless you abide in Me.
5 “I am the vine, you are the branches; he who abides in Me and I in him, he bears much fruit, for apart from Me you can do nothing.
6 “If anyone does not abide in Me, he is thrown away as a branch and dries up; and they gather them, and cast them into the fire and they are burned.
7 “If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you.
Chapter 15 of john say abide.
How will we abide in him?
By the spirit remember for God is a spirit and those who worship him
must worship in spirit and truth.
Then it says if we abide we will bear fruits what are those fruits called.
Galatians calls them the fruit of the spirit.
22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,
23 gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.
16 But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not carry out the desire of the flesh.
17 For the flesh sets its desire against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; for these are in opposition to one another, so that you may not do the things that you please.
18 But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the Law.
Sin brings bondage and bondage brings sin
And Christ came to set the sinner free.
lets look at some context
1 It was for freedom that Christ set us free; therefore keep standing firm and do not be subject again to a yoke of slavery.
One very important key here
If you have been set free, be free!!!
Webster defines freedom as
Freedom - the state of being free from the control or power of another.
example, we owe our freedom to the untold numbers of soldiers who have fought in our nation's wars since its founding.
notice the context..
Paul is referring to life under the law verses life under the spirit.
in verse 18 he lets us know
18 But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the Law.
Lets look quickly at verse 16 reading it with 18
16 But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not carry out the desire of the flesh.
17 For the flesh sets its desire against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; for these are in opposition to one another, so that you may not do the things that you please.
18 But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the Law.
Paul is letting us know that the law can not give man freedom over their flesh.
so the question becomes what is the Flesh?
this speaks of our senses.
God does not want us contol by our senses.
He doesnt want the tail wagging the dog.
again, the law can not give man freedom over their flesh.
No one will be justified by the law, the law brings guilt, judgment and death; it is unable to set the sinner free or justify him before God. No flesh can be justified by the law.
Freedom, true freedom in itself is a work of the holy spirit.
I must say It is a desire of every man to be free.
19 Now the deeds of the flesh are evident, which are: immorality, impurity, sensuality,
20 idolatry, sorcery, enmities, strife, jealousy, outbursts of anger, disputes, dissensions, factions,
21 envying, drunkenness, carousing, and things like these, of which I forewarn you, just as I have forewarned you, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.
It was for freedom that Christ set us free; therefore keep standing firm and do not be subject again to a yoke of slavery.
the spirit frees us from sin’s bondage
22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,
23 gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.
gal 5:22
against such things there is no law.
the Holy Spirit will give power to live out these fruits
love, agape, divine love
joy, chara, the emotional excitement
peace, eirene, the state of quietness, rest
patience, makrothumia, longsuffering, to bear long
kindness, chrestotes, gentleness, kind, eventempured
goodness, agathosume, the state of being good, virtuous, Godlike
faithfulness, pistis, divinely implanted, principle of inward confidence
gentleness, praotes, meekness evenly balanced, suffer without feel vengful
self-control, enkrateria, control of behavior
these are our witnesses
