Servants in the Kingdom of God are not affected by positions of power or influence. These things can so easily control and consume us. Instead, servants are free to demonstrate an amazing devotion and dedication to duty. How? By following Jesus as disciples. In these verses Jesus explains how the meaning of His own death will shape the attitude of those who serve in the Kingdom. In the Kingdom, the greatest is the one who serves and the one who is last is first. He uses an Old Testament metaphor of the cup to refer to a ransom that He will freely pay with His own life. Because the payment has been made, we are not held captive to worldly ways of thinking. As disciples, we have the attitude of Jesus Christ (Phil 2:5-11).
