A Prophet Like You!

We are shifting gears today to begin to unpack Jesus’ discourse of His return
Matthew 24:3 NKJV
Now as He sat on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to Him privately, saying, “Tell us, when will these things be? And what will be the sign of Your coming, and of the end of the age?”
Over the past weeks we looked at the issue of Prophecy and the ministry of the Holy Spirit
2 Peter 1:16 NKJV
For we did not follow cunningly devised fables when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but were eyewitnesses of His majesty.
2 Peter 1:19–21 NKJV
And so we have the prophetic word confirmed, which you do well to heed as a light that shines in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts; knowing this first, that no prophecy of Scripture is of any private interpretation, for prophecy never came by the will of man, but holy men of God spoke as they were moved by the Holy Spirit.
We learned that the prophetic ministry wan’t based on someone’s thoughts but rather the revelation of future events as reveled by God through the Holy Spirit
We learned that the record of the prophetic ministry of the Holy Spirit is perfect and that man’s record is totally wrong
We learned that prophecy was given to us as a light to shine through the dark times of this age and that it should bring comfort and strength to the believer no matter the outcome of events
So where does this take us today?
In a lengthly discourse of the failure of the religious leadership of the day, Jesus reminds them that their end will be destruction because they failed to recognize Him through the prophecies given
Matthew 23:37–38 NKJV
“O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the one who kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to her! How often I wanted to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you were not willing! See! Your house is left to you desolate;
Jesus’ desire was to protect them but the result of their rejection of Christ left them in desolation!
The word desolate here means a place with many dangers, an unprotected place, a place not inhabitable, a place with no life!
It is a place where the demonic reign
1 Corinthians 6:9–11 NKJV
Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived. Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals, nor sodomites, nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners will inherit the kingdom of God. And such were some of you. But you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus and by the Spirit of our God.
It was the place we were living before accepting Christ’s love
So where did they miss it?
Deuteronomy 18:15–19 NKJV
“The Lord your God will raise up for you a Prophet like me from your midst, from your brethren. Him you shall hear, according to all you desired of the Lord your God in Horeb in the day of the assembly, saying, ‘Let me not hear again the voice of the Lord my God, nor let me see this great fire anymore, lest I die.’ “And the Lord said to me: ‘What they have spoken is good. I will raise up for them a Prophet like you from among their brethren, and will put My words in His mouth, and He shall speak to them all that I command Him. And it shall be that whoever will not hear My words, which He speaks in My name, I will require it of him.
At Horeb, the people realized who God was in light of who they were and were afraid of his presence even though they wanted to know him
Horeb was a place of God’s call, revelation and provision
burning bush, 10 commandments, water from the rock
The problem was that access to God was restricted so God promises to fulfill their desire through another - Jesus
Look what is says about Him
John 8:12 NKJV
Then Jesus spoke to them again, saying, “I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life.”
John 1:1 NKJV
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
Hebrews 1:1–2 NKJV
God, who at various times and in various ways spoke in time past to the fathers by the prophets, has in these last days spoken to us by His Son, whom He has appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the worlds;
Peter then confirms this in the book of Acts
Acts 3:19–26 NKJV
Repent therefore and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, so that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord, and that He may send Jesus Christ, who was preached to you before, whom heaven must receive until the times of restoration of all things, which God has spoken by the mouth of all His holy prophets since the world began. For Moses truly said to the fathers, ‘The Lord your God will raise up for you a Prophet like me from your brethren. Him you shall hear in all things, whatever He says to you. And it shall be that every soul who will not hear that Prophet shall be utterly destroyed from among the people.’ Yes, and all the prophets, from Samuel and those who follow, as many as have spoken, have also foretold these days. You are sons of the prophets, and of the covenant which God made with our fathers, saying to Abraham, ‘And in your seed all the families of the earth shall be blessed.’ To you first, God, having raised up His Servant Jesus, sent Him to bless you, in turning away every one of you from your iniquities.”
The result of rejection of Christ is destruction and a life of desolation!
“God will raise up for you a Prophet like me from your midst” Notice here that it is a Jew that will be this coming prophet
Our local friends would liken it to Mohammed but clearly it cannot be so!
What was Moses’ role?
Lead the people according to God’s instruction, Intercede on behalf of the people, reveal God’s word tho them, to be judge over them
We can clearly see that Christ fulfilled all these roles and continues to do so through the ministry of the Holy Spirit which He told the disciples...
John 14:25–26 NKJV
“These things I have spoken to you while being present with you. But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you.
