How Do We Move From Desperation to Confidence?

In Psalm 16...

I. It started with a REQUEST v.1a

Psalm 16:1 Preserve me, O God, for in you I take refuge.

II. Then, REASONS were given to fulfill that request v.1-4

     a. "I seek shelter in you!" v.1

Psalm 16:1 Preserve me, O God, for in you I take refuge.

     b. "I worship you alone!" v.2

Psalm 16:2 I say to the Lord, “You are my Lord; I have no good apart from you.”

     c. "I love your people!" v.3

Psalm 16:3 As for the saints in the land, they are the excellent ones, in whom is all my delight.

     d. "I hate idols/false gods!" v.4

Psalm 16:4 The sorrows of those who run after another god shall multiply; their drink offerings of blood I will not pour out or take their names on my lips.
in summary: "Answer my request because I belong to you!"

III. Then, REFLECTIONS of BELIEVER's BENEFITS started coming to mind.v.5-10

     a. Providential care v.5

Psalm 16:5 The Lord is my chosen portion and my cup; you hold my lot.

     b. An Abundant Life v.6

Psalm 16:6 The lines have fallen for me in pleasant places; indeed, I have a beautiful inheritance.

     c. Perfect Counsel v.7

Psalm 16:7 I bless the Lord who gives me counsel; in the night also my heart instructs me.

     d. Supernatural Stability v.8

Psalm 16:8 I have set the Lord always before me; because he is at my right hand, I shall not be shaken.

     e. Promised Resurrection v. 10

Psalm 16:9 Therefore my heart is glad, and my whole being rejoices; my flesh also dwells secure.
Psalm 16:10 For you will not abandon my soul to Sheol, or let your holy one see corruption.

IV. The RESULT was Joyful Confidence v.9-11

Psalm 16:9 Therefore my heart is glad, and my whole being rejoices; my flesh also dwells secure.

      a. Confident that the path of life comes from God alone

Psalm 16:11 You make known to me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore.

      b. Confident that complete joy comes from God alone

Psalm 16:11 You make known to me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore.

      c. Confident that pleasures forever more come from God alone

Psalm 16:11 You make known to me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore.

Confident that dying will only make things better for me! Take your best shot!

In conclusion: If we belong to God, He will bring us (both body and soul) into full joy and pleasures forevermore! Everything we could ever want or need is found in HIM! We have more than enough reasons to be confident even when the enemy stands ready to kill!
