HOw did Jesus come
The Son of Man has come eating and drinking, and you say, ‘Look at him! A glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!’
Luke
eating & drinking
Jesus breaks bread
meals have changed over time for us
early in marriage Ramen Noodles & McDonalds
NT meals would sometimes last for hours — event
to have deep fellowship with one another
night before Jesus was betrayed He met with HIs best friends & broke bread with them
And they devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers. And awe came upon every soul, and many wonders and signs were being done through the apostles. And all who believed were together and had all things in common. And they were selling their possessions and belongings and distributing the proceeds to all, as any had need. And day by day, attending the temple together and breaking bread in their homes, they received their food with glad and generous hearts, praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to their number day by day those who were being saved.
relationships and community changed
when we got an A/C
attached garage — opener
used to shop in stores now online
spend time with people to keep up — now we have FB/social media
False translation:
The Christians were devoted to themselves and occasionally got to church when they had time. No one was filled with awe because there were no signs and wonders performed by the believers.
Very few of the believers were together and they had almost nothing in common because they had no real time with each other. If they sold something, they used the money to buy something better for themselves.
They ate on the run, kept to themselves and were too rushed to enjoy one another or give praise to God.
They claimed to love God, but they didn’t really love each other and they felt very empty and alone. As a result, most people disliked them and very few people were every saved.
Which version represents your life?
we break bread together because we love one another
Our world values independence
a follower of Jesus is the opposite of independence
cannot save yourself
we are dependent upon Jesus & one another
we need a personal relationship with Jesus - can’t just have your moms faith
we really need a shared relationship with others
- it’s mine and it’s theirs so lets share it
Share with other believers at church
not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.
And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.
what if when we met together it wasn’t to just go grab food or to watch the game together
BUT to get together and talk about how to serve others better & what we can do at church to be more effective
there is power in presence
if I tell you that I will pray for you is powerful and great
MORE when we gather together and lock hands and pray
Same with Sunday morning church
we can all be believers and go to small group or just wing it alone
but there is greater power when we come together in unity
There is something about being together that makes things more meaningful
FOR EXAMPLE:
If my family decides to watch a movie at home at 7pm
Megan in the living room
I would in the bedroom
& kids in their own rooms on their tablets
THAT WOULDN’T BE NEARLY AS FUN
The statistics show that the average American christian attends church 1 time per month
I’m glad that there is still some level of value to church to the average
If you always trump church for something else
and don’t allow church to trump other things
it’s no wander that children are growing up seeing no value in the church or with a relationship with God
to share Jesus together and worship together is the goal
it’s not about hearing good music and hoping that I will find something good to say
it’s about us worshiping together
growing thru God’s Word together
serving others & with others
helping others & with others
2) Share with a commited community of believers
help around one anothers homes
car trouble share car
vacations or trips
through difficult marriage conflicts
through raising of one anothers children
in growing in Biblical understanding & application
when you are mad at one another
get on on anothers nerves
don’t agree
get feelings hurt
COMMITED
And day by day, attending the temple together and breaking bread in their homes, they received their food with glad and generous hearts, praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to their number day by day those who were being saved.
Acts 2:
this will not happen by accident
others will look at what you have and want it
WE CANNOT WORSHIP GOD LIKE HE DESERVES ALONE
we need one another
need a relationship with GOD?
need a relationship with other believers?
