Text (Luke 11:5-13)

5 Then He said to them, “Suppose one of you has a friend, and goes to him at midnight and says to him, ‘Friend, lend me three loaves;

6 for a friend of mine has come to me from a journey, and I have nothing to set before him’;

7 and from inside he answers and says, ‘Do not bother me; the door has already been shut and my children and I are in bed; I cannot get up and give you anything.’

8 “I tell you, even though he will not get up and give him anything because he is his friend, yet because of his persistence he will get up and give him as much as he needs.

9 “So I say to you, aask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you.

10 “For everyone who asks, receives; and he who seeks, finds; and to him who knocks, it will be opened.

11 “Now suppose one of you fathers is asked by his son for a fish; he will not give him a snake instead of a fish, will he?

12 “Or if he is asked for an egg, he will not give him a scorpion, will he?

13 “If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him?”

Observations

This comes on the heels of Jesus teaching the disciples how to pray
The promise is not that the asker will be given what is requested, but that they will be given the Holy Spirit, which is infinitely more valuable than anything that we could ever ask for

The Holy Spirit

The Breath of the Almighty: The Holy Spirit is the life-giving breath of God ()
Counselor, Comforter: The Holy Spirit comforts, counsels, and gives strength (, ; ; )
Spirit of Counsel: The Holy Spirit counsels and teaches us as we grow in Jesus ()
Eternal Spirit: The Holy Spirit is Eternal God ()
Free Spirit: The Holy Spirit is God’s generous & willing Spirit ()
God: The Holy Spirit is the third person in the Godhead ()
1 Cor. 2:16
1 Corinthians 2:16 ESV
“For who has understood the mind of the Lord so as to instruct him?” But we have the mind of Christ.
Paul is talking about having the Holy Spirit present

the mind of Christ Probably refers to God’s gift of the Holy Spirit to His people. The presence of the Spirit grants believers the ability to discern God’s will and works within them to make them more like Christ.

Like Christ, believers can understand the difference between right and wrong and are empowered to seek God’s will over and against sin and their own natural desires and inclinations (vv. 9, 12).

Application

When we invite The Holy Spirit into our situations, God answers that call, God sends the Holy Spirit
When God shows up, He is in control
He is sovereign
He is good
He loves us
