Expressions of Love
Expressions of Love
Luke 6:35-40
There are undoubtedly certain traits that true believers exhibit in their lives. And yet, these traits are not separate from the character of God Himself.
Our text and companion teaching found in the sermon on the mount (Matthew 5-7) though a different event altogether, describes some of these.
1. We are to love our enemies and do good.
2. Lend without expectation of return.
3. We must be merciful.
4. We must not be judgmental or condemning.
5. We are to give abundantly.
But now, let us notice that these traits are more than this, they are expressions of love.
I. THESE EXPRESSIONS OF LOVE ARE EXPECTATIONS OF A CHILD OF GOD. Vs.35
They have been expressed to us.
We have been blessed by them.
And now, we are to reciprocate to others.
A. A child of God does not discriminate.
B. A child of God must conform.
Luke 16 finds the prodigal son having finally come to his senses, returns home with a new attitude and code of living, whereby the father cloths him, shoes him, and puts the ring of royalty upon his finger.
II. THESE EXPRESSIONS OF LOVE ARE THE WORKINGS OF PERFECTION IN CHRIST. Vs.40
A. Christ is our master, and we draw upon His example.
B. When our attitude or actions are anything but that of the master, then do we place ourselves above Christ, and are thus imperfect.
III. THESE EXPRESSIONS OF LOVE ARE REWARDED WITH THE SAME. Vs.38
A. We do not engage in those expressions for the purpose of getting.
B. The Biblical principal of sowing and reaping is here expressed.
C. As understood in other scriptures (Prov.6:22) this is not an absolute, but a general statement.
