Spirit Distinctive Worship

Passage Philippians 3:3
Attention-
What do you delight in?
Yes, God....what else?
-Family
-Sports
-A hobby
So that thing you delight in....how do you express that delight?
-Time
-Attention
-Resources
-Words
Introduction
Someone once said (I am choosing to leave his name out) “I think we delight to praise what we enjoy because the praise not merely expresses but completes the enjoyment. It is not out of compliment that lovers keep on telling one another how beautiful they are; the delight is incomplete till it is expressed.”
*When it comes to worshipping God…how do you express your delight?
*How are you able to rightly worship?
The Creator of all the Universe...
The high and lifted up one of
-The one where in
Isaiah 6:3 KJV 1900
And one cried unto another, and said, Holy, holy, holy, is the Lord of hosts: The whole earth is full of his glory.
Revelation 4:8 KJV 1900
And the four beasts had each of them six wings about him; and they were full of eyes within: and they rest not day and night, saying, Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty, which was, and is, and is to come.
Revelation 4:8
Revelation 4:10–11 KJV 1900
The four and twenty elders fall down before him that sat on the throne, and worship him that liveth for ever and ever, and cast their crowns before the throne, saying, Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honour and power: for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created.
How do we know we are properly worshiping our Creator God?
What is the main driving point (CPS)?
I want to propose this morning that Genuine worship comes from the Holy Spirit
Genuine worship comes from the Holy Spirit
Why does the CPS matter, what is the consequence?
is the verse that started this in my mind.
Here in we are commanded to worship in the Spirit…
If we do not worship in the Spirit we are not giving God genuine worship
So then how do we worship in the Spirit?
Transition
The first way that we worship in the Spirit is that...

I. We worship by NOT grieving the Holy Spirit.

Explain
The Bible commands us not to grieve the Holy Spirit
This idea is also expressed as
Ephesians 4:30 KJV 1900
And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption.
1 Thessalonians 5:19 KJV 1900
Quench not the Spirit.
The idea is also expressed as not quenching the Holy Spirit.
1 Thessalonians 5:19 KJV 1900
Quench not the Spirit.
1 Thesselonians
Bridge to today
We might not outright defy the Spirit…none of us would be that dumb....
But how many of us have justified or made excuses for our actions or inactions...
How many of you, like me, have used this phrase...”It’s not my gifting”?…How do you know if you’ve never gotten out of your padded pew to find out?
Or how about this one...”If I serve in there I will miss the blessing of being in this service or that class”…Friend, God can bless you anywhere He pleases
-99% of the blessings I recieved from the Lord were while I was serving Him
I would say at least half of those blessings came from situations I had never been in before.
Relevance
Our entire life is worship…not just Sunday morning.
If we quench the Holy Spirit we will be resigning our ability to live a life that glorifies the Father
How do we quench the Spirit?
1-By relying upon anything other than the Holy Spirit to life a God glorifying life
2-When we diminish who He is
3-When we suppress the imparting of spiritual gifts for the service of the church
4-When we so formalize our worship that we leave no room for the leading of the Spirit
5-When we ignore truth that declares the majesty of God or the sinfulness of our hearts.
6- When we remove all emotion from worship
Transition
A second way we worship in the Spirit is that

II. We worship by being filled by the Holy Spirit

Explain
Ephesians 5:18 KJV 1900
And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit;
Here is another of our Christian slogans that I feel a lot of us would struggle to properly define...
Here is another of our Christian slogans that I feel a lot of us would struggle to properly define...
How are we filled by the Spirit?
First and most importantly we are initially filled by the Spirit at the moment of salvation
-That meaning....the moment you realize you are a sinner and call upon Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins you are filled with the Hoy Spirit of God.
It is from that point on that we begin this process of being filled.
After salvation this is a daily process.
Bridge to today
None of us would say that once we went through the legal aspect of getting married that the process of marriage is over.
I expressed my love and devotion on the wedding day so now I’m good.....NO!
In reality it has just begun at that point.
It is at that point that you on a daily…sometimes hourly basis work on keeping your marriage a good marriage.
Then there are those times where you might get a little lazy in your efforts and your marriage begins to suffer.
What do you do at that point, give up.
NO! you get back to work strengthening your marriage.
You daily and hourly get back to filling your marriage with the love and devotion it had
Relevance
We do something similar in our spiritual lives…we get lazy.
We start to lose the love and devotion to the Father…What then?
Why does this matter?
1- Resist sin…
2- Be in the Word of God and not only in it but listening to and applying the Word
3- Ask God to help you…ask, He will answer...
4- Allow others to help you…God uses other Christians to guide us
What are some indicators of filling (these can be faked) Ephesians 5:20-21
Singing
Thanksgiving
Submission one to another
Transition
The last area that we will see is the opposite of what we just looked at…Instead of grieving the Holy Spirit.....

III. We worship by relying on the Holy Spirit

Explain
Romans 8:5–6 KJV 1900
For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit. For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.
I fear that too often when we discuss or think about the Holy Spirit we have this idea of an inferior being…or an inferior power
I fear that too often when we discuss or think about the Holy Spirit we have this idea of an inferior being…or an inferior power
Like when Samuel came to Jesse and told him that one of his sons would be king over Israel and Jesse lined up David’s seven brothers...
tells us that Jesse had 8 sons...
1 Samuel 16:11 KJV 1900
And Samuel said unto Jesse, Are here all thy children? And he said, There remaineth yet the youngest, and, behold, he keepeth the sheep. And Samuel said unto Jesse, Send and fetch him: for we will not sit down till he come hither.
Why did he only line up 7? One was inferior....
1 Samuel 16:10 KJV 1900
Again, Jesse made seven of his sons to pass before Samuel. And Samuel said unto Jesse, The Lord hath not chosen these.
When David brings his brothers food during the standoff with Goliath in why is he berated by his brothers? He is inferior
This is how we see the Holy Spirit.
Bridge to today
Did you know that there are a lot of companies that sell their product under more than one name?
-Tire companies generally have a secondary brand
-Food
-Clothing
And so on
The fact of the matter is that the product is identical in its essence but with a different name and a different function or target audience.
Relevance
I wnat to share something with you that I believe I knew intellectually but never fully comprehended until a couple years ago.....
The Holy Spirit of God has the same attributes as the Father or the Son!!!
The Holy Spirit is:
-Eternal (exists endlessly past and future)
-Infinite (has no bounds or limits)
-Omniscient (knows all things)
-Omnipresent (present everywhere)
-Omnipotent (all powerful)
-Holy (separate from all that is unclean)
-Immutable (unchangeable)
Why does this matter?
When we view the Spirt as an inferior little brother we are missing out on the greatest blessings God has for us.
When we choose to ignore the Spirit because He just isn’t that important…or powerful....
-That is when our problems begin
-THe Holy Spirit is essential to our glorifying God and our spiritual maturity...
Have you notices how small batteries have become?
I have laptop that weighs just over 3 puonds…that includes all the components and the battery
-When I was in college I had a laptop that weighed close to 7 pounds…the battery alone weighed 2 1/2 pounds
-And I could use the internet for three hours before I had to recharge....
-Now, before I go on…would any of you choose this heavier and bigger battery?
The laptop I use now the battery only weighs a pound...
-But I can get as much as 7 hours of use...
Conclusion
If our relationship with the Holy Spirit is right our worship will be right.
Review of the Principles and the Sermon Proposition
Are you grieving the Spirit?
Are you being filled by the Spirit?
Are you relying on the Spirit?
Challenge to act now (your part)…immanence
If these are areas are a problem in your life you need to come before God and make things right.
Visualize Audience Implementation
The purpose of our lives is to glorify the Father…If any of these things are impeding your worship you need to get them straightened out between you and the Father
It’s not between you and I or you and the church…this is between you and the Father..
Final Statement
The only way to honor the Father is through right worship, the only way to have right worship is through the Spirit.
