Recap Roms 1-3:20
Righteousness Revealed
Righteousness Revealed
“But now the righteousness of God has been manifested apart from the law, although the Law and the Prophets bear witness to it - the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all who believe.”
But now…conjunction contrasting Paul’s previous statements of man’s condemnation with the believer’s justification
“Righteousness of God” 4x
showing the stark contrast b/w our unrighteousness and God’s righteousness
the transfer of God’s righteousness to the guilty (for all who believe)
Does not annul the law (v. 31)
3 Uses of the Law
Law as a mirror - reflects God’s righteousness, reflects our sin, Schoolmaster that drives us to Christ
Restraint of evil - written on men’s hearts, causes men to not be as evil as they could be
Reveals what is pleasing to God - born again Christians have a desire to obey God’s law
Through faith in Christ we receive the very righteousness of God
Moved from depth of our darkness to the height of His heaven
8 for at one time you were darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light
9 But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.

21 For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.
One Gospel. One Salvation. One People.
One Gospel. One Salvation. One People.
“For there is no distinction: for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus,”
No distinction in believers
for all (who believe) have sinned
(all who believe) fall short of the glory of God
(all who believe) are justified
Justification by grace through faith (first time mentioned)
No merit or contribution on our part
8 For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God,
Must be given because we have no means to earn or purchase it
1 “Come, everyone who thirsts,
come to the waters;
and he who has no money,
come, buy and eat!
Come, buy wine and milk
without money and without price.
Through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus
Through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus
Christ is the conduit and container of our salvation
Redeemed - saved from God’s wrath that we deserve due to our sin
9 Since, therefore, we have now been justified by his blood, much more shall we be saved by him from the wrath of God.
Rom 5:
100% of salvation lies in Christ
100% of salvation lies in Christ
“It is finished”
6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.
John 14:
One Wrath Satisfying Sacrifice
One Wrath Satisfying Sacrifice
“whom God put forward as a propitiation by his blood, to be received by faith.”
God decreed the cross
23 this Jesus, delivered up according to the definite plan and foreknowledge of God, you crucified and killed by the hands of lawless men.
God was pleased by Christ’s death on the cross
10 Yet it was the will of the Lord to crush him;
he has put him to grief;
when his soul makes an offering for guilt,
he shall see his offspring; he shall prolong his days;
the will of the Lord shall prosper in his hand.
11 Out of the anguish of his soul he shall see and be satisfied;
by his knowledge shall the righteous one, my servant,
make many to be accounted righteous,
and he shall bear their iniquities.
12 Therefore I will divide him a portion with the many,
and he shall divide the spoil with the strong,
because he poured out his soul to death
and was numbered with the transgressors;
yet he bore the sin of many,
and makes intercession for the transgressors.

Hilasterion - greek equivalent to hebrew word for “mercy seat”,
We must receive the work of the cross by faith
Propitiation/expiation
At the mercy seat of the cross God reconciles His people to Himself
We must receive the work of the cross as sufficient by faith
God’s Holiness Upheld
God’s Holiness Upheld
“This was to show Gods righteousness, because in his divine forbearance he had passed over former sins. It was to show his righteousness at the present time, so that he might be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus.”
The sins of OT saints had to be punished
God’s patiently overlooked these sins with the cross of Christ always in view
Christ’s death atoned for ALL that did and would believe
6 All we like sheep have gone astray;
we have turned—every one—to his own way;
and the Lord has laid on him
the iniquity of us all.
OT saints lived by faith in the promised seed ()
NT saints lived by faith in the revealed righteousness in Christ
We live today by faith in what has been clearly revealed in God’s word
The true and historic Jesus
