Introduction

Revelations written by John while in exile on the island of Patmos
The only book of the Bible that begins and ends with a blessing.
Revelation 1:3 ESV
3 Blessed is the one who reads aloud the words of this prophecy, and blessed are those who hear, and who keep what is written in it, for the time is near.

3 Blessed is the one who reads aloud the words of this prophecy, and blessed are those who hear, and who keep what is written in it, for the time is near.

Revelation 22:7 ESV

3 Blessed is the one who reads aloud the words of this prophecy, and blessed are those who hear, and who keep what is written in it, for the time is near.

Over 400 verses and none of them quote the OT
178 of the verses refer to the OT but they do not quote it.
We now find ourselves near the end of the book and John is taking dictation from God.

New Heaven, New Earth; vs. 1-3

Heaven is an actual place not a spiritual place. It is referred to as up from the earth though we don’t know the actual location.
This text unfolds the 6 features of the final and eternal heaven called the new heaven and the new earth.
The appearance of the new heaven new earth
The capital of the new heaven new earth
The supreme reality of the new heaven new earth
The changes of the new heaven new earth
The residents of the new heaven new earth
The outcasts of the new heaven new earth
Earth was originally designed to be our permanent dwelling place but sin entered the world, through Adam, then began the state of decay due to the wages of sin.

Define “New”

Gr. kainos - not referring to new as in a chronological sense but new in a qualitative sense
The new heaven and new earth will not merely succeed the present universe in chronological sequence; they will be something brand new, fresh, never before seen.
Isaiah 65:17 ESV
17 “For behold, I create new heavens and a new earth, and the former things shall not be remembered or come into mind.
Why do we need a new heaven and a new earth?
Romans 8:20 ESV
20 For the creation was subjected to futility, not willingly, but because of him who subjected it, in hope
Matt
Matthew 24:35 ESV
35 Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away.
Isaiah 24:5 ESV
5 The earth lies defiled under its inhabitants; for they have transgressed the laws, violated the statutes, broken the everlasting covenant.
Isaiah 24:15 ESV
15 Therefore in the east give glory to the Lord; in the coastlands of the sea, give glory to the name of the Lord, the God of Israel.
The OT tells us of the pollution and destruction of the present universe. states the heavens are not pure in his sight. describes how the earth is also polluted by its inhabitants for they trespassed the laws, violated statutes, broke the covenant.
Psalm 102:25–26 ESV
25 Of old you laid the foundation of the earth, and the heavens are the work of your hands. 26 They will perish, but you will remain; they will all wear out like a garment. You will change them like a robe, and they will pass away,
Psa
Isaiah 24:5 ESV
5 The earth lies defiled under its inhabitants; for they have transgressed the laws, violated the statutes, broken the everlasting covenant.

The Reality of Heaven; vs. 4-6

Revelation 21:3 ESV
3 And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Behold, the dwelling place of God is with man. He will dwell with them, and they will be his people, and God himself will be with them as their God.
Notice how it is stated twice that God will dwell with man.
The tabernacle, the dwelling place of God, is with man!
OT tells us this
Leviticus 25:11–12 ESV
11 That fiftieth year shall be a jubilee for you; in it you shall neither sow nor reap what grows of itself nor gather the grapes from the undressed vines. 12 For it is a jubilee. It shall be holy to you. You may eat the produce of the field.
Leviticus 26:11–12 ESV
11 I will make my dwelling among you, and my soul shall not abhor you. 12 And I will walk among you and will be your God, and you shall be my people.
Ezekiel 37:27 ESV
27 My dwelling place shall be with them, and I will be their God, and they shall be my people.
What will it be like to be in heaven?

We will see God as he is.

Who Doesn’t Get to Heaven; vs. 8

Revelation 21:8 ESV
8 But as for the cowardly, the faithless, the detestable, as for murderers, the sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars, their portion will be in the lake that burns with fire and sulfur, which is the second death.”
Discuss who we are talking about in v. 8; we can either love the world or we can love God.
1 John 2:15 ESV
15 Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.

16 For all that is in the world—the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride of life—is not from the Father but is from the world.

1 Jn 2:1
What is “in the world?
Desires of the flesh
Desires of the eyes
Pride of life
How does this relate to and the Fall of Man?
Saw the tree was good for food
It was a delight to the eyes
Desired to make one wise
Relate this to the Greatest Commandment
Love God with all your heart
Love God with all your soul
Love God with all your mind
Matthew 22:37–40 ESV
37 And he said to him, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. 38 This is the great and first commandment. 39 And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. 40 On these two commandments depend all the Law and the Prophets.”
Mt
