An Invitation to come to the Lord

Isaiah 55:1–2 HCSB
“Come, everyone who is thirsty, come to the waters; and you without money, come, buy, and eat! Come, buy wine and milk without money and without cost! Why do you spend money on what is not food, and your wages on what does not satisfy? Listen carefully to Me, and eat what is good, and you will enjoy the choicest of foods.
Invitation- Verse one- Come X4
Two options in verses 1-2
Take what you need freely.
Buy what you don’t need.
This is an invitation to stop spending your energy on trying to make your own life work, and to accept the salvation that is available in Christ.

An Invitation Based on Love

Isaiah 55:3 HCSB
Pay attention and come to Me; listen, so that you will live. I will make an everlasting covenant with you, the promises assured to David.
KJV- Sure mercies of David… It’s not mercy from David, but mercy David received.
This word translated mercy (actually plural) is one of the most important in the Bible. And it is such a rich and deep word it is hard to give a good translation in one word… It is the Hebrew word
Hesed
Holman translates as - promises assured
ESV- steadfast sure love
Lexham English- enduring proofs of the mercies shown
NIV- faithful love
CSB- The Basis of the faithful kindness.
You get the idea.
The one word is the foundation behind Lauren Daigle’s song Loyal!
I could never earn Your heart I could never reach that far But You have pulled me close You've never let me go I'm safe forever in Your arms Your promises I can not break And I know You will never change You are always there for me You listen every time I speak You look into my eyes You see the things I hide And say that You will never leave Your promises I can not break And I know You will never change When my world shakes Your love remains unshaken So constant, so perfect, unwavering When my world falls Your love remains unfailing So constant, so perfect, unwavering So constant, so perfect, unwavering Your love is, Your love is Your love is loyal More faithful than the rising sun This grace for me I can't outrun Your love is, Your love is Your love is loyal
And this love is based on Covenant. Everlasting Covenant. From God. To all who will COME!

An Invitation that extends to the Nations

Isaiah 55:4–5 HCSB
Since I have made him a witness to the peoples, a leader and commander for the peoples, so you will summon a nation you do not know, and nations who do not know you will run to you. For the Lord your God, even the Holy One of Israel, has glorified you.”
I believe the Him in verse 4 is the same Him over chapter 53. It is Messiah, King Jesus, and descendant of David. who will suffer and die, abut he will also be a leader a commander. King Jesus will one day return to rule and reign from Israel, and the nations will come running.

An Invitation that Needs to Be heeded

There is an urgency to be heeded

Isaiah 55:6 HCSB
Seek the Lord while He may be found; call to Him while He is near.

There is sin to be shunned

Isaiah 55:7 HCSB
Let the wicked one abandon his way and the sinful one his thoughts; let him return to the Lord, so He may have compassion on him, and to our God, for He will freely forgive.
Why? Because God has compassion and free forgiveness to those who will.

There is God’s mind to be considered

Isaiah 55:8–9 HCSB
“For My thoughts are not your thoughts, and your ways are not My ways.” This is the Lord’s declaration. “For as heaven is higher than earth, so My ways are higher than your ways, and My thoughts than your thoughts.

There is God’s will to be embraced

Isaiah 55:10–11 HCSB
For just as rain and snow fall from heaven and do not return there without saturating the earth and making it germinate and sprout, and providing seed to sow and food to eat, so My word that comes from My mouth will not return to Me empty, but it will accomplish what I please and will prosper in what I send it to do.”

There is God’s Joy to be received

Isaiah 55:12–13 HCSB
You will indeed go out with joy and be peacefully guided; the mountains and the hills will break into singing before you, and all the trees of the field will clap their hands. Instead of the thornbush, a cypress will come up, and instead of the brier, a myrtle will come up; it will make a name for Yahweh as an everlasting sign that will not be destroyed.
