Introduction:
Go morning church.
A “MAD” cartoon (Sept. 1977) shows a young lady saying, “Hey, Vivian! Let’s go to lunch!”
“Not today! I brought a snack. Then I have some work to catch up on.”
The first young lady says then, “Hey, Nancy! Sylvia! How about some lunch?”
“We can’t! We’re both on the `Skip-a-Meal’ diet!”
Sitting in a vast, crowded restaurant, she is thinking, “Gee . . . I hate eating alone!”
Pastor Joel C. Gregory tells the story of how he visited a student café in central Oxford, UK. At the cash register, a box of clamshells rested with a sign inviting customers to take a clamshell to their tables if they wished to talk with a stranger while eating. Gregory describes how he contemplated this box of clamshells while he ate. The café, he says, sits in the middle of 10,000 of the smartest young adults in the world. Why, he wondered, would such people need to take a clamshell to a café table to bid lunchtime conversation? He wondered, should I take a shell? What if I take a shell and nobody comes to talk with me? Then he thought, what if this shell game was a brilliant idea for encouraging connectedness? What if this became a universal custom? What if this simple act to end loneliness was the start of something profound?
