There is a proverb of not being able to see the forest for the trees.
In this text our danger is not being able to see the trees for the wood. The description of each tree is all important for the interpretation of the text.
I. The High Tree—the Type of the Proud Sinner
I. The High Tree—the Type of the Proud Sinner
"I the Lord have brought down the high tree."
The high trees in Scripture mentioned in Scripture are a type of proud sinners. The best example of that is in Daniel's prophesy. Nebuchadnezzar dreamed and told Daniel. See
Thus were the visions of mine head in my bed; I saw, and behold a tree in the midst of the earth, and the height thereof was great. The tree grew, and was strong, and the height thereof reached unto heaven, and the sight thereof to the end of all the earth: The leaves thereof were fair, and the fruit thereof much, and in it was meat for all: the beasts of the field had shadow under it, and the fowls of the heaven dwelt in the boughs thereof, and all flesh was fed of it.
See Daniel 4:10-12
Dan. 4:10-12
Every proud sinner is pictured as a high tree, lofty and fruitful and in the sight of man fair to behold.
II. The Low Tree—the Type of the Repentant Sinner Felled but Then Exalted by Grace
II. The Low Tree—the Type of the Repentant Sinner Felled but Then Exalted by Grace
II. The Low Tree—the Type of the Repentant Sinner Felled but Then Exalted by Grace
I saw in the visions of my head upon my bed, and, behold, a watcher and an holy one came down from heaven; He cried aloud, and said thus, Hew down the tree, and cut off his branches, shake off his leaves, and scatter his fruit: let the beasts get away from under it, and the fowls from his branches:
Dan. 4:
The sinner must be felled with the axe of God and the high tree must become a low tree.
It is only when the sinner is abased by repentance that he can be uplifted by grace.
As Nebuchadnezzar learned:
r lear
Nevertheless leave the stump of his roots in the earth, even with a band of iron and brass, in the tender grass of the field; and let it be wet with the dew of heaven, and let his portion be with the beasts in the grass of the earth:

Dan. 4:26
And whereas they commanded to leave the stump of the tree roots; thy kingdom shall be sure unto thee, after that thou shalt have known that the heavens do rule.

III. The Green Tree—the Type of Christ Crucified
Christ Himself throws Divine light upon this, using the figure of the green tree as a type of His Atoning Suffering and death.
"For if they do these things in a green tree, what shall be done in the dry?" .

There can be no hope for any old, dead, dry wood of a sinner but in the sap of the green tree.
There can be no hope for any old, dead, dry wood of a sinner but in the sap of the green tree.
The Lord alone is that tree—the tree planted by the rivers of waters.
Only by His drying up, His drying by the shedding of His life and His life was in His blood, we sinners would fall forever never to rise again.
His sap is our salvation and blessed be God, He the tree of God, was full of sap.
For even hereunto were ye called: because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow his steps: Who did no sin, neither was guile found in his mouth: Who, when he was reviled, reviled not again; when he suffered, he threatened not; but committed himself to him that judgeth righteously: Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed.

Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree:

Psalm 1:
And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.
For he shall be as a tree planted by the waters, and that spreadeth out her roots by the river, and shall not see when heat cometh, but her leaf shall be green; and shall not be careful in the year of drought, neither shall cease from yielding fruit.
