This verse seems to reveal a procedure for Christian worship. If not a literal pattern for worship, it certainly contains components that we can and should include in our worship today.
Psalms (songs of praise)
A psalm is a story (put into song) of a man’s deliverance or commemoration (celebration) of mercies he has received. Hymns are a direct praise that declare how great someone is. They are songs that minister (sung in honor) to God. Spiritual songs are songs that contain prophesies or contain an element of inspiration in them. Spiritual songs are contrasted with “drunken” songs.
doctrine (teaching).
Doctrine doesn’t have to come through discourse. It can come through music (). However, if music is the medium of our teaching, then it should match the lesson it is attempting to teach ().
tongue (something revealed by inspiration)
The implication is that if there is message given in a tongue, then it should also include an interpretation (, ). We see here that prophecy is equivalent to a tongue with an interpretation.
Revelation (something revealed by study)
Interpretation (to interpret/explain/expound on what has been said)
Here are given another component for Christian worship...
Exhortation (; ).
The word “exhort” means to to urge, encourage, inspire or even invite men towards action ().
Confession ()
Exhortation (; ). The word “exhort” means to to urge, encourage, inspire or even invite men towards action ().
Confession is essential, particularly if we want God to hear our prayers.
Here we have yet another component for Christian worship...
Bearing one another’s burdens (1Peter 1:22).
Comfort
Comfort means to give emotional strength to others.
