Love is a Verb
Back in the early 90’s a hit Christian Band named DC Talk wrote a song titled Love is a Verb.
The lyrics are…I think Owasso should challenge another church to a lip sync battle on you tube and join in our Owasso PD in our becoming a citizen friendly environment.
Love is a verb
What is Paul saying to us: Work out your own salvation with fear and trembling?
The Philippian Christians needed to follow Christ, obey His commands, and follow Paul’s instructions which are drawn from Christ’s example.
But this is not new.
This is the way it is and has been since the beginning.
Work it out!
Are you saying the blood of Christ isn’t necessary?
Are you saying we are saved by works?
No I’m not.
Listen carefully.
You have been saved by grace through faith, not of any works you have done, lest you should boast.
Already saved people, who may not like where you are planted, who may not like your circumstances, or the people God has placed around you...
Work it out!
We don’t quit, we don’t walk away.
We work it out.
This Christ thing isn’t for me…it’s hard, my friends are having fun, i’m stuck in Bible study…work it out
I’m called to love the unlovable, new laws seem to defeat the church, and take us back a step...
Work it out!
Stop putting your self in front, stop taking the best seat, stop judging your brother, calling others and starting a chain of Prayer Requests... and get behind.
Make Christ your example, humble yourself and work it out.
Where did Christ get the power, motive, and intent to go to the cross.
Love
Love is the differentiator in the Christian walk.
1 Cor 13
Love never fails.
1 Cor 13:4-
What are you to work out?
You are to work out until you love like Christ loves!
The Shema
Heart
The Hebrew people thought the heart was the location of understanding
This is the place we find our affections, those internal desires that attract us to one thing or another or over another.
A very small spark inside the heart can explode into a raging fire that gets out of control
A new car that isn’t necessary
A new ring or jewelry a shopping spree “but it was on sale”
You touch a coworker inappropriately and she responds positively
You receive an email from an old boyfriend and the emails begin to consume your day
We must guard our affections carefully
Loving God with the whole heart means he is Lord over all our affections.
He is the center of our attraction, He comes first.
If He isn’t...
Work it out
WILL
Mind
The heart also serves as a home for our will, the resolve that causes us to stand strong for beliefs and convictions.
Even small children have strong wills...
They too stand their ground
It takes willpower to make good moral choices in our fallen world
A stubborn selfish will on the other hand can be an ugly sight when the selfish can’t resolve within their will to put others first.
Relationships crash, businesses crumble, homes are broken and kids are left without nurture ll because of the selfish will.
Is the Lord Lord over your will?
Do you stand for the things God stands for?
Is God your primary love?
Does He organize your life in Holy ways?
Lev 9:2
Do you love God with all of your heart as it concerns your affections and will?
What evidence supports your answer?
Work it out
Soul
The Hebrew people believed God formed us from the dust of the ground and breathed into our nostrils and we became a living soul.
We are not inanimate objects
Inanimate objects proclaim Him; they show his glory.
Psalm 19:1-2
But we, well We worship Him!
Our free will is set to worship the creator, Love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul...
Do you love the Lord your God with all your soul?
What evidence supports your answer?
Mind
The mind, our intellectual power
It is more than just learning earthly tasks
The mind allows us to learn about God, to study God, to think about God.
Our mind is capable of memorizing His word, causing us to have stimulating conversation about the Bible, and activating our minds to hear and accept the truth of God.
Read a good book on Christ and share it.
Go deep in thought with Him, ask for wisdom and knowledge, seek Him in prayer often...
Or, we can update Facebook and scan it to see whats trending...
Do you love God with your entire mind?
What evidence supports your answer?
Strength
We have the ability to rise each morning, go into our world, and make a difference.
Be a good steward of your body that would allow you to use it to bring glory to His name.
Is your energy consumed doing good in His name?
Here is where the rubber meets the road.
Yes, your best efforts may go unnoticed by the church.
Work it out!
Mother Teresa never set out to be famous.
She set out to give a cup of cold water to a starving, dying human being whom God loved.
Be a helping hand.
Do you love God with all your strength?
What evidence supports your answer?
Work it out...
Back to DC Talk
Pullin' out my big black book
Cause when I need a word defined that's where I look
So I move to the L's quick, fast, in a hurry
Threw on my specs, thought my vision was blurry
I looked again but to my dismay
It was black and white with no room for grey
