Introduction
“Jesus the Miracle Worker”, series we will look at Jesus calming the storm found in Luke chapter 8 verse 22-25.
Luke 8:
These miracles were used by Jesus to make people lives better.
In every situation the people affected by the miracle was made better.
The blind could see, the lame could walk, the unclean was clean, and weak in faith becomes faithful.
Today in America we believe that bigger is better, long life is a better life, and more is better.
Jesus did not die on the cross for a bigger life or a longer life but for a better life.
Jesus wants your life to be better today.
Stop speculating on how long you will life.
I can give example of people who have lived a long miserable life.
I want you to speculate today on what needs to happen for you to have a better life today.
What must you do today to please God?
What must you do today to obey Christ.
Let make today the best it can be.
Set the Stage:
The Disciple starts this day by obeying Jesus.
He tells them to go to the other side of the lake and they did.
They were following Christ, they were obeying Christ, so you would expect all would go well for them that day - but it did not go well.
A storm came while they were crossing the lake.
Have you every been there: You are in a good place.
doing what God has called you to do… and everything is going wrong!
Maybe you are hear today and are saying to your, “yes… That’s me! Well this message is for you!
This message force me to tell my “Dog Attack Story”.
Many of you have heard it just before.
Honduras...
The disciple were on mission, they were obeying the master BUT found themselves in serious trouble.
Today you may be confused about what God is allow to happen in your life.
Today you may feel that he does not care, or he is letting this trouble go on too long
Today you may feel rejection and loneliness not only from other people but from God.
Here is my sermon in a sentence: Trouble in life is not fixed by understanding, but by faith in a Sovereign Savior.
Blessings
We pray for blessings
We pray for peace
Comfort for family, protection while we sleep
We pray for healing, for prosperity
We pray for Your mighty hand to ease our suffering
All the while, You hear each spoken need
Yet love is way too much to give us lesser things
Cause what if your blessings come through raindrops
What if Your healing comes through tears
What if a thousand sleepless nights are what it takes to know You're near
What if trials of this life are Your mercies in disguise
We pray for wisdom
Your voice to hear
We cry in anger when we cannot feel You near
We doubt your goodness, we doubt your love
As if every promise from Your Word is not enough
All the while, You hear each desperate plea
And long that we'd have faith to believe
When friends betray us
When darkness seems to win
We know that pain reminds this heart
That this is not our home
What if my greatest disappointments
Or the aching of this life
Is the revealing of a greater thirst this world can't satisfy
What if trials of this life
The rain, the storms, the hardest nights
Are your mercies in disguise
The Disciples did not understand the Storm.
()
The Disciples did not understand how Jesus could sleep when they were danger.
Often when trouble comes our way we wonder why Jesus does not respond.
The Disciples did not understand how Jesus would allow this to happen to them.
The term “Master” is used In Luke to express the confusion of the disciples by the actions or words of Jesus.
When Luke tells the story of the catch of fish, Peter says, “Master we’ve worked hard all night and haven’t caught anything.
But because you say so, I will let down the nets.”
The term, “Master” refers to a “All-Knowing Sovereign God who does things outside our understanding.
Proverb 3:
Proverb 1
The troubling Circumstances do not define who Jesus they define this world.
This world is not our home.
This world is not a good place because of sin.
The storm becomes a test of faith in the disciples life.
Let the storms of life strengthen your faith in Jesus.
When you are in trouble .... Run to Jesus.
Is Jesus in your boat?
You my think you can handle life, but you can not.
You need Jesus in your boat.
The Disciples did not understand the Calm.
()(9)
Luke seems to have used this title in situations in which the disciples did not understand Jesus’ power or purpose (cf.
Luke 5:5; 8:45; 9:33, 49).
Luke
The Disciples were just as surprised at the calm as they were the storm.
Mark
The authoritative word of God is on display.
Jesus speaks to the wind and waves like they have ears and they obey.
The winds died and the storm stopped and it becomes completely calm.
The authoritative word works for the wind and the waves, but not on the disciples.
Their peace was only found in a calm sea not in the Saviors presence.
Where do you find peace?
In the absent of trouble?
If that is your only peace you will live a restless life.
Find your peace in the overwhelming presence of God through a personal relationship with Jesus Christ.
True peace comes from no one else.
Their lack of faith bring fear into their lives.
Fear is a lier and will always let you down and keep you up at night.
This time of testing was meant to prepare them for the future events.
Remember in the Garden they were sleeping while Jesus was praying.
They fear and storm of in the sea, but in the hour of darkness when Satan would have his way.
