Our Courage Comes From Our Faith
Our Courage Comes From Our Faith
Illustration:
Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.
We could paraphrase the verse this way:
Faith is the confidence in what we hope for and the assurance about what we do not see
Illustration: trust exercise
Let’s talk about a real life hero- King David
People mentioned in are sometimes called heroes of faith. Guess who is mentioned in ? David is.
32 And what shall I more say? for the time would fail me to tell of Gedeon, and of Barak, and of Samson, and of Jephthae; of David also, and Samuel, and of the prophets:
33 Who through faith subdued kingdoms, wrought righteousness, obtained promises, stopped the mouths of lions,
34 Quenched the violence of fire, escaped the edge of the sword, out of weakness were made strong, waxed valiant in fight, turned to flight the armies of the aliens.
Heb 11.32
David and Goliath Slide
You know the story of David and Goliath don’t you? The armies of Israel and the armies of the Philistines were in a war. Every day Goliath would shout to the armies of Israel for them to send out a champion, send him out, so that Goliath could fight him. Whoever would win the contest would win the war.
I Sam 17.
10 And the Philistine said, I defy the armies of Israel this day; give me a man, that we may fight together.
How did the men of Israel respond to Goliath’s challenge?
11 When Saul and all Israel heard those words of the Philistine, they were dismayed, and greatly afraid.
Did they have courage? Why not? Goliath was really really big, and strong, and scary.
Who eventually stepped up and said, “I will fight the giant?” David, a little, young, shepherd boy.
Why wasn’t David afraid of Goliath? Why did David have so much courage?
37 David said moreover, The Lord that delivered me out of the paw of the lion, and out of the paw of the bear, he will deliver me out of the hand of this Philistine. And Saul said unto David, Go, and the Lord be with thee.
David had courage because David put his faith in God. Do you remember what our definition of faith is?
Faith is the confidence in what we hope for and the assurance about what we do not see
What was David hoping for when he fought Goliath? He was hoping that he would win the battle. Did David have confidence that he would win? YES. Did David know for certain that he would win? He thought he would, but he didn’t know. He couldn’t see into the future and know he would win. But David had assurance that he would win even though he could not see. David had faith that God would give him the victory and it was David’s faith that gave him courage.
45 Then said David to the Philistine, Thou comest to me with a sword, and with a spear, and with a shield: but I come to thee in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom thou hast defied.
47 And all this assembly shall know that the Lord saveth not with sword and spear: for the battle is the Lord’s, and he will give you into our hands.
Kids if you want to be a hero like David, then you must have the faith of David. You must have confidence that God is greater than all of your problems. You must have assurance that God will help you even though you cannot see the future.
