The Pillar New Testament Commentary: The Letter of James B. Wholeness Requires Wisdom, Which God Gives to All Who Ask in Faith (1:5–8)
Wisdom is the means by which the godly can both discern and carry out the will of God
What is our source for wisdom? Where does wisdom come from ?
If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.
Now if we ask God for wisdom is God going to tell us in an audible voice? No. How does God teach us or give us wisdom? Through His Word.
Do you know who the wisest man in the Bible was? King Solomon. Listen to the words that King Solomon wrote many years ago.
5 Trust in the Lord with all thine heart;
And lean not unto thine own understanding.
6 In all thy ways acknowledge him,
And he shall direct thy paths.
5 Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; And lean not unto thine own understanding.
6 In all thy ways acknowledge him, And he shall direct thy paths.
7 Be not wise in thine own eyes: Fear the Lord, and depart from evil.
Illustration: Reading Greek NT- be not wise in your own eyes. Don’t think that you know it all, or that you have it all figured out. There is so much that we don’t know, and we don’t have the discernment to do what’s right even if we did know.
12 There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, But the end thereof are the ways of death.
We think we know what is right and best and wise- it seems right to us, but God says if we trust in our own wisdom our ways will lead to death.
How can that be? How does man’s wisdom lead to death?
I have asked a lot of people this question, “If you were to die today would you go to heaven?” And many of them have answered, “Yes, I think I would.” When I ask them why do you think that- they usually give me this kind of an answer. Well- I think I am a good person, and God will accept me into heaven because I have done more good things than bad things. But kids- is this what the Bible says?
No it does not.
10 As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one:
11 There is none that understandeth, there is none that seeketh after God.
12 They are all gone out of the way, they are together become unprofitable; there is none that doeth good, no, not one.
Rom 3
Now what are we going to trust? What are we going to put our faith in? Remember we have been talking about faith all week. The source of our courage is from what? Faith. The source of our strength is from what? Faith. Guess where the source of our wisdom comes from? It comes from faith. What are you going to trust? Are you going to trust in your own wisdom?
Remember what Solomon said,
7 Be not wise in thine own eyes: Fear the Lord, and depart from evil.
Or, are we going to put our faith in the Word of God?
5 If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.
God’s Word is the source of all wisdom. And in God’s word we learn that there is no one that does what is good. There is no one who is righteous. We are all sinners in the eyes of God. And kids- God tells us in His Word- He gives us some very Wise words- God tells us that we all must be saved. We need to have our sins forgiven, and we need the righteousness of Christ. Don’t put your faith in your own wisdom or the wisdom of man. Put your faith in God and in His Word.
A real hero has wisdom, wisdom is the ability to both know God's will and to do God’s will. We can only be wise if we put our faith in God- if we depend upon His word. Kids what do you trust?
