Church Membership by Jonathan Leeman
How the World Knows who represents Jesus

Key Verse: Verse 33. “God is not a God of confusion, but a God of peace.”

This peace and lack of confusion should be typical of all worship services as a reflection of who God is.
We are representatives of God

How are we to represent the peace and order of God?

We have a purpose as we meet together.
To build each other up (vs26)
each one can learn and be encouraged (vs 31)
There are distractions to the worship service that must be avoided.
Unbiblical content
hymn , lesson, revelation, tongue with interpretation, prophecy
Colossians 3:16 ESV
Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God.
These (above) build up, edify, cause the Church to grow in grace and knowledge of our Lord Jesus Chirst
Too many speaking in tongues
Limit those who speak in tongues to 2-3
Speaking in tongues without and interpreter
Does not build up the Church
Is confusing to unbelievers in our Church services
Too many prophets
Must be able to “weigh” what is said
Women asking questions during the service
challenging the speakers’ authority?
Bringing shame upon the husband and his role as spiritual leader
shameful for a woman to speak in the church service
1 Timothy 2:12–13 ESV
I do not permit a woman to teach or to exercise authority over a man; rather, she is to remain quiet. For Adam was formed first, then Eve;
Men should prepare themselves as the spiritual leaders in the home to answer the spiritual questions of their wives
Church Worship Service must be orderly to reflect the peace of God.
Orderly signifies some planning and preparation
Those who speak must go in turn (one by one)
Not all at once, causing confusion
Limit the number of those speaking in tongues
zero if no interpreters
Limit the number of speakers
Ask questions af
Weigh what is said
Don’t interrupt those speaking, but ask questions after the Service
We are to acknowledge that these practices are from the Lord. (vs37)
Danger of not recognizing this teaching!
Everything should be done decently and in order!
