A Divided Heart, 19-34

The Heart and Treasure, 19-21

Jesus taught not to hold on to earthly material things because eventually they would just rust, be eaten by moths, and dissolve. But instead, He taught to store up “treasures in heaven” that will never fade away, nor can they ever be stolen.
What did Jesus mean by treasure in heaven? Building a strong spiritual relationship.
What did Jesus say our treasure reveal about us? The condition of our hearts.
Sometimes I get so focused on the things I want to do, what I look like, and what I want that I totally skip my bible reading time and start looking up things online. Some times I think I’m so hungry that I forget to thank God for the food. We have to watch what we hold in importance.

The Eye and the Heart, 22-23

Jesus taught the eye is the lamp of the body. If you wear glasses or contacts you understand that if your vision is poor you’re going to have a hard time guiding your body. This is a comparison of our hearts. If our hearts are misguided we will store up treasure that are of little importance.

The Divide, 24

It’s impossible to be both and Alabama fan and an Auburn fan. You may not have a preference or could care less about the rivalry. Either way, you just can’t cheer for both. I also believe you can’t be a fan of both Marvel and DC. One is the greatest comic and movie franchise of all time and the other is DC.
Jesus taught that It was impossible to sere two masters. Meaning, it’s impossible to do everything for material gain and for the kingdom of God. Our hearts are created to serve one master, riding the fence is not an option.

A Focused Mind, 25-34

Don’t Worry, 25-32

Jesus taught that because our hearts cannot be divided, do not worry about the day to day issues that come up.
What does it mean to worry? To be anxious, uneasy, or troubled. Also, Jesus taught that worry means a lack of faith. (v. 24)
What kind of day to day things do we worry about? What to wear, do, think, eat, etc...
Jesus made a contrast between birds and humans. He said that the birds have everything they need and all they do is live life day to day. What was his point? That humans will obviously be taken care of if birds are! So chill out!

Seek What Matters, 33-34

So, if Jesus was so adimate on telling people not to worry, what did He tell them they should do? Seek the kingdom of God and his righteousness first. A believer top priority is to live for God’s glory and to be right with him. Jesus promised that everything else would be taken care of.
What does this passage teach us about our wants, plans, and needs?
All these things are not sinful but they shouldn’t be our priority.

Gospel

There is one thing we definitely should not worry about and that’s planning our salvation. No matter how much we worry, how divided our hearts are, or how little our faith is, Jesus died on the cross and rose from the grave so that we could repent of our sin and believe in Him to have eternal life.
