Paul in prison around AD 60
to the churches in Ephesus -Gentiles
to display the scope of God’s eternal plan for all eternity
first three chapters explain dead sinners are made alive through faith in Christ.
last three chapters explain God’s grace for the church, families, and individuals. It ends with putting on the full armor of God.

4 I therefore, a prisoner for the Lord, urge you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling to which you have been called, 2 with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love, 3 eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. 4 There is one body and one Spirit—just as you were called to the one hope that belongs to your call— 5 one Lord, one faith, one baptism, 6 one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all.

Vs 1
Walk - how you conduct yourselves
worthy of the calling to which you have been called
Salvation, being part of the church

2 with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love,

2 with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love, 3 eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.

Vs 2
How: vs 2-3 Requirements of the Church for Unity = 5
Humility
Gentleness
Patience
Naturally changed by the Holy Spirit - fruits of the Spirit Galatians 5:22-23
Bearing with one another in love (put up with each other..... in Love) -

2 So if there is any encouragement in Christ, any comfort from love, any participation in the Spirit, any affection and sympathy, 2 complete my joy by being of the same mind, having the same love, being in full accord and of one mind. 3 Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. 4 Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others. 5 Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, 6 who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, 7 but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. 8 And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.

Eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace -
This cannot be done humanly, it has to be orchestrated by the Spirit

14 For he himself is our peace, who has made us both one and has broken down in his flesh the dividing wall of hostility

4 There is one body and one Spirit—just as you were called to the one hope that belongs to your call— 5 one Lord, one faith, one baptism, 6 one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all.

vs 4-6 “One’s” Reasons for Unity in the Church = 7
vs 4-6 “One’s” Reasons for the Church to be unified = 7
ONE:

12 For as the body is one, and hath many members, and all the members of that one body, being many, are one body: so also is Christ. 13 For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit. 14 For the body is not one member, but many.

12 For just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ. 13 For in one Spirit we were all baptized into one body—Jews or Greeks, slaves or free—and all were made to drink of one Spirit.

14 For the body does not consist of one member but of many.

Body - 2:16 the church
Body - 2:16 the church
Spirit (capital S) - 2:18 access to the Father through the Spirit
Hope - hope of His calling and the knowing the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints
Lord - no other savior

38 And Peter said to them, “Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

Faith - vs 13 perfect man, understanding, like Christ
Baptism - Baptized into Christ
God and Father of all -
Ephesians 3:14–15 KJV 1900
For this cause I bow my knees unto the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, Of whom the whole family in heaven and earth is named,
14 For this reason I bow my knees before the Father, 15 from whom every family in heaven and on earth is named,

7 But grace was given to each one of us according to the measure of Christ’s gift.

The Holy Bible: English Standard Version. (2016). (). Wheaton: Standard Bible Society.
Vs 7
Grace was given to each one of us according to the measure of Christ’s gift.
What qualifies us to be able to minister on God’s behalf? His grace in our lives. If we are all sinners, enemies of God we have no right to minister to others except the grace given to us from God’s work on the cross His gift to us.

8 Therefore it says,

“When he ascended on high he led a host of captives,

and he gave gifts to men.”

Vs 8
refers to where it states that God gave gifts to men.

18  You ascended on high,

leading a host of captives in your train

and receiving gifts among men,

even among the rebellious, that the LORD God may dwell there.

Paul uses this reference for the spiritual gifts that God gives to the church.

9 (In saying, “He ascended,” what does it mean but that he had also descended into the lower regions, the earth?

Vs 9
“He descended”
This reference could be when :
Jesus descended into the underworld after his death OR
it could be referencing when the Holy Spirit came to indwell believers at the day of Pentecost and give spiritual gifts OR
it could refer to when Jesus came from heaven to live on earth

10 He who descended is the one who also ascended far above all the heavens, that he might fill all things.)

Vs 10
Vs 10
He ascended to fulfill all things

11 And he gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the shepherds and teachers,

vs 11
vs 11
Received Gifts of the Church for Unity = 5

apostles Refers to those who are sent out by Christ to speak and act with special authority. See note on Eph 2:20; note on 1 Cor 12:28.

prophets Refers to those who are designated by God to speak on His behalf. See note on Eph 2:20; note on 1 Cor 12:10.

evangelists Refers to those who proclaim the truth of the gospel and call others to live by Jesus’ standards (compare Acts 21:8; 2 Tim 4:5).

pastors Refers to those who care for, or protect, the Church. Since the Greek word used here, poimēn, literally means “shepherd” and is often translated as such, this role corresponds with the NT portrayal of the Church as God’s flock (1 Pet 5:2; Acts 20:28).

teachers Indicates those who faithfully pass on the teachings of Christ and the apostles, especially through explaining or applying Scripture (compare Titus 2:1).

Responsibility for Unity

12 to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ,

vs 12
vs 12
equip the saints for the work of ministry
building up the body of Christ

13 until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to mature manhood, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ,

vs 13
until we ALL attain to :
to the unity of the faith
the unity of the faith
knowledge (experience) of the Son of God
Mature manhood
the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ
WHY???

14 so that we may no longer be children, tossed to and fro by the waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by human cunning, by craftiness in deceitful schemes.

vs 14
The purpose of the church is to grow in unity with each other and study the word of God so we are able to know what God wants of us.

15 Rather, speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ,

vs 15
Speaking truth in love
many times we need to speak the truth, but we need to do it in love so we can all grow up in Christ.

16 from whom the whole body, joined and held together by every joint with which it is equipped, when each part is working properly, makes the body grow so that it builds itself up in love.

vs 16
the body of Christ cannot grow properly unless all the parts are working correctly.
