Relationship with Parents

Relationship with Parents

· We are sinners living together. There is going to be conflict, but God’s plan is right.
· God has a plan for proper relationships between children and parents.
· God is creator, He made man, He sets the rules, children are commanded to respect their parents
Definition of respect
1. defer
2. esteem
3. appreciation
Teens are tempted to think they know more, so they don’t have to listen to their parents
1. Respect starts with a correct view of God
Proverbs 1:7 KJV 1900
The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge: But fools despise wisdom and instruction.
· Without the fear of the Lord, you will respect people that they feel deserve respect
The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge: But fools despise wisdom and instruction.
· Without the fear of the Lord, you will respect people that they feel deserve respect
· Parents, as other authorities (teachers) are not perfect
· The young person who gains knowledge and wisdom fears the Lord
Proverbs 23:24–26 KJV 1900
The father of the righteous shall greatly rejoice: And he that begetteth a wise child shall have joy of him. Thy father and thy mother shall be glad, And she that bare thee shall rejoice. My son, give me thine heart, And let thine eyes observe my ways.
And he that begetteth a wise child shall have joy of him.
25 Thy father and thy mother shall be glad,
And she that bare thee shall rejoice.
26 My son, give me thine heart,
And let thine eyes observe my ways.
· The fool is the person who does not submit to God’s authority in his life
· God’s Word is the ultimate source of trusted knowledge
Note: Wisdom is making correct Biblical decisions in your life
Salvation
· Heaven is a free gift, it is not earned or deserved (, )
, )
Ill: gift
· Man ()
- Made in God’s image with an intellect, emotion, and will
- Sinner (defined; does not fear God)
· God
- Just ()
Exodus 34:7 KJV 1900
Keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, and that will by no means clear the guilty; visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children, and upon the children’s children, unto the third and to the fourth generation.
- Love ()
· Christ
- He is God (, )
Mark 8:27–29 KJV 1900
And Jesus went out, and his disciples, into the towns of Caesarea Philippi: and by the way he asked his disciples, saying unto them, Whom do men say that I am? And they answered, John the Baptist: but some say, Elias; and others, One of the prophets. And he saith unto them, But whom say ye that I am? And Peter answereth and saith unto him, Thou art the Christ.
- He paid in full the penalty for our sin (; )
- He is our perfect Exchange
Romans 5:8–9 KJV 1900
But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him.
)
· Faith
- More than just knowledge ()
- Trusting in Jesus Christ alone for salvation (, ; )
- 2 chairs
- keys
2. A correct view of God runs contrary to the beliefs of our culture
· Our culture denies His authority
- We cannot compare ourselves to other people
- We must compare ourselves to God’s Word
God is our ultimate authority. He made us, and we are His
Psalm 103:19 KJV 1900
The Lord hath prepared his throne in the heavens; And his kingdom ruleth over all.
· Parents have authority not because they are stronger or smarter, but because God has given them authority. God is stronger, and smarter and His plan is to give us parents who are sinners as our authority. (; )
· Who is in charge?
· All human authority comes from God. Human leaders may fight their way to the top, but God is the ultimate authority.
He is sovereign over human authority.
· Example of Israel in captivity
Proverbs 21:1 KJV 1900
The king’s heart is in the hand of the Lord, as the rivers of water: He turneth it whithersoever he will.
The king’s heart is in the hand of the Lord, as the rivers of water: He turneth it whithersoever he will.
· Example of Israel in captivity
· Example of Israel in captivity
· The best leaders are followers of God. Joshua trusted that God and followed God’ commands. His submission to God is what made him a strong and courageous leader.
Joshua 1:1–9 KJV 1900
Now after the death of Moses the servant of the Lord it came to pass, that the Lord spake unto Joshua the son of Nun, Moses’ minister, saying, Moses my servant is dead; now therefore arise, go over this Jordan, thou, and all this people, unto the land which I do give to them, even to the children of Israel. Every place that the sole of your foot shall tread upon, that have I given unto you, as I said unto Moses. From the wilderness and this Lebanon even unto the great river, the river Euphrates, all the land of the Hittites, and unto the great sea toward the going down of the sun, shall be your coast. There shall not any man be able to stand before thee all the days of thy life: as I was with Moses, so I will be with thee: I will not fail thee, nor forsake thee. Be strong and of a good courage: for unto this people shalt thou divide for an inheritance the land, which I sware unto their fathers to give them. Only be thou strong and very courageous, that thou mayest observe to do according to all the law, which Moses my servant commanded thee: turn not from it to the right hand or to the left, that thou mayest prosper whithersoever thou goest. This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success. Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the Lord thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest.
3. Practical Help
· Respectful attitudes are counter-cultural. Kids today are very rude to their parents, they start shouting at them almost as soon as they can speak. The battle for top dog has already begun.
· Your attitude is your choice, you cannot control the behavior of other people, but you can always control your own attitude.
- You don’t understand!
- When you have a bad attitude to your parents, that is disrespect, and the Bible calls that sin.
- Define sin
Lust-Sin-Death
sin comes from out of our heart
Many TV shows and movies turn disrespect into humor.
· Parents are not perfect, they are sinners by birth. However, a bad decision does not give children the excuse to be disrespectful.
1 Peter 2:13–17 KJV 1900
Submit yourselves to every ordinance of man for the Lord’s sake: whether it be to the king, as supreme; Or unto governors, as unto them that are sent by him for the punishment of evildoers, and for the praise of them that do well. For so is the will of God, that with well doing ye may put to silence the ignorance of foolish men: As free, and not using your liberty for a cloke of maliciousness, but as the servants of God. Honour all men. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honour the king.
talks about respecting govt. There is no exclusion for corrupt govt officials.
This verse talks about respecting government. There is no exclusion for corrupt government officials.
- Corrupt government
- Herod the great killed all the baby boys under the age of 2
- Nero used Christians to light his garden parties, he tortured them in Colosseums
1 Peter 2:18 KJV 1900
Servants, be subject to your masters with all fear; not only to the good and gentle, but also to the froward.
Servants, be subject to your masters with all fear; not only to the good and gentle, but also to the forward
· Don’t manipulate your parents
· Don’t analyze your parents’ decisions to decide which ones are reasonable and which ones are not
· Don’t interrupt your authorities. Listen to what they say and then request to share your ideas. This is true both now at home, with your teachers, and with a job in the future.
· Making a proper appeal
· Bottom line: Respect is an issue of the heart that comes down to fearing God.
