Introduction
What is wisdom?
What does it mean to be a truly wise person?
Wisdom is not necessarily intelligence.
There are geniuses in this world that lack wisdom.
Wisdom is not the ability to know all things.
Wisdom is not being an expert in every field there is to study.
Wisdom is a God-given gift that enables human beings to act as they should within a given situation.
Those that are not wise are fools.
There is an entire book in the Bible dedicated to the importance of wisdom - the book of Proverbs.
Proverbs are short sayings that teach us important principles that if we follow them, we will be wise men, women, and children.
The book of Proverbs addresses many different topics: money, marriage, sexuality, gossip, honesty, justice, alcoholism, parenting, selling/buying, etc.
There are many people that read a chapter of the book of Proverbs every day since it contains 31 chapters.
They read the chapter that corresponds with the day of the month.
Our goal during the next few weeks is to pick a subject that is addressed in the book of Proverbs and study it so that by doing so we may gain wisdom.

Proverbs 1:1
We are immediately introduced to “Solomon the song of David, king of Israel”.
It is my conviction that the book of Proverbs was written by the wisest man on the face of the earth in those days - king Solomon.
Solomon is one of the most well known kings in the history of Israel, after David.
The reason he is so well known is that the Bible describes him as a truly wise king.
In the Bible speaks of his great wisdom:
1 Kings 4:29
How is it that Solomon became so wise?
The Bible tells us in 2 Chronicles that God told Solomon to ask him for anything.
God would grant any desire that Solomon presented before him.
2 Chronicles 1:7-
God’s answer to Solomon was to grant him great wisdom plus a prosperous kingdom.
2 Chronicles 1:
Solomon showed wisdom in asking God for even more wisdom.
He knew that silver and gold could come and go.
He knew that military power could was also undependable.
But most of all, he knew that wisdom would truly make him a great king and would strengthen his reign over Israel.
Without wisdom he was just a warm body sitting on a throne.

Two benefits of studying Proverbs

Thing of all the prosperous people that you know - what do they think is important to be truly successful?
Many attribute success to street smarts.
Others attribute success to being good business people.
Although these things are good things, they are not sufficient to be wise men, women, and children.
Why?
As believers, we do not live only for this life but we live thinking in terms of eternity.
Whatever decisions we make in this life will have eternal consequences.
It is for this reason, that we desperately need God’s wisdom to fill our minds.
The book of Proverbs tells us that studying the book of Proverbs has two main benefits:
We are taught to live rightly
We are taught to think rightly
Notice how Proverbs wants to affect how we live and how we think.
If our conduct and thinking are not affected - we can easily become hypocrites.
Those who only
Living rightly
Living rightly speaks about our conduct in this life.
It speaks about how we behave.
Proverbs 1:2-3
Proverbs intends to give us instruction and wisdom so that our behavior will be affected.
We need wisdom in how we behave towards our children, our spouses, our employer, alcohol, sexuality, food, money, etc.
We need wisdom so that our behavior will be righteous, just, and fair (not partial but rather impartial).
If these studies do not change our behavior then we have truly not understood the book of Proverbs.
Therefore, we understand from the book of Proverbs that God intends to change our outward behavior.
Thinking rightly
God cares about our way of thinking, our perspective, our opinions, our prejudices, our inmost thoughts!
God not only wants to change our behavior.
He does not desire robots.
He wants to change our minds and hearts.
The book of Proverbs is intended to change how we think and subject our minds to the word of God.
The books of Proverbs will give us prudence and discretion.
How many people lack tact and know when to say something and when to be quiet.
How many young people lack knowledge, discretion and direction for their lives.
Through the word we will be equipped to respond to many difficult situations with God-given wisdom.
The Bible tells us:
When we come to know the Gospel of Jesus we come with many ideas or ways of thinking that were molded by the world.
For this reason, we must allow the wisdom of the word of God to mold our minds and change our hearts.

The end goal of Proverbs

We will be transformed through the word of God.
Our conduct/behavior and our thinking will be changed by the word of God - why should we even care?
Right living and right thinking are characteristics of a person that truly fears God.
Fear of God can be defined as a healthy respect for God, reverence for God, a life devoted to the worship of God.
There are many people in this world that are smart, intelligent, or even geniuses.
However, when it comes to the things of God they are fools for they despise true wisdom and instruction.
How many smart/intelligent/geniuses are there that:
Are adulterers?
Lie?
Cheat?
Unable to administer their money?
Refuse to acknowledge God?
The Bible describes them as fools!
It does not matter how much they know - they do not know the most important thing - God must be feared, he must be acknowledged, he must be reverenced.
The true fear of God is not a religious experience but rather submitting ourselves to the word of God by allowing it to affect our behavior and our thinking.
