Preparing for 50 DAYS OF TRANSFORMATION – Part 3
- No astronaut is sent into space w/o life support
Jesus: “Wherever two or three gather together in my name, I will be right there with them.” (LB)
- No deep sea diver dives ...
Paul: “I’m writing these instructions... so you’ll know how to live in the family of God. That family is the church...” (NCV)
- No brain surgeon operates ...
- No soldier is sent to battle... w/o a SMALL PLATOON
And God NEVER intended you to go thru life on your own!
“They committed themselves to learning the teachings of the apostles...” (Mes)
The life-support system in your BODY is millions of little cells!
In the Body of Christ ... cells are called “small groups”
Jesus: “Wherever two or three gather together in
“They joined with other believers in fellowship...” (NLT)
my name, I will be right there with them." (LB)
“They were like family to each other...” (CEV)
o SB only church in America...
“They committed themselves to life together...” (Mes)
- Intend to start 3,000 new groups this wkend!
o Each yr, all-church small group study: Next wk: 50 DOT
“They shared in fellowship meals...” (TEV)
I don want you to miss this! SO IF YOU’RE NOT in....
“They ate meals together in their homes, eating with great joy and generosity...”
At the end of this service, I’m going to help you start one for 7 wks
“They spent time praying together…” (NCV)
o Since over 35,000 of u will meet in a small group for 7 wks
Today just 2 questions
“They shared everything with each other... and helped each other when anyone in the group had a need…”
What does a small group do?
How can I get the MOST benefit from my group?
“God has given each of you some special abilities; be sure to use them to help each other.” (LB)
HOW CAN I GET THE MOST FROM MY GROUP?
Paul: “I’m writing these instructions...
so you’ll know how to live in the family of God. That family is the church...”
Our model: the first church
“Let us not give up the habit of meeting together. Instead, let us encourage one another.” (TEV)
“(The first church met) day after day, in the Temple Courts AND from house to house...”
“Don’t try to act important but enjoy the company of ordinary people. And don’t think you know it all!” (NLT)
WHAT DOES A SMALL GROUP DO?
5 elements of spiritual life support
“Never let selfishness or pride be your guide. Instead, be humble and give more honor to others than to yourselves. Do not be interested only in your own life, but be interested in the lives of others.” (NCV)
Need all 5 to be health.. to grow.. to change
1. WE STUDY GOD’S WORD TOGETHER
“Welcome with open arms fellow believers who don’t see things the way you do. And don’t jump all over them every time they do or say something you don’t agree with—even when it seems that they are strong on opinions but weak in the faith department. Remember, they have their own history to deal with. Treat them gently.” (Mes)
“They committed themselves to learning the teachings of
“We must bear the burden of being considerate of the doubts and fears of others...”
(LB)
the apostles...” (Mes) The Bible!
o In an accident- who sees more details? 1 person or 6?
“If we live in the light, as God is in the light, we can share fellowship with each other… (But) if we claim we have no sin, we are fooling ourselves, and the truth is not in us.”
You learn FAR more in GROUP Bible study
(NCV)
o In SVCC groups- u dont have to be a teacher to start one
“Admit your faults to one another and pray for each other so that you may be healed.”
All our studies are taught by our pastors on video! H.O.S.T.
ANYONE... kids.. teens... grandmas... (UK- 93yr...
(LB)
2. WE PRACTICE LEARNING HOW TO LOVE
1. Your #1 purpose in life is to learn to love GOD & OTHERS
“Help carry each other’s burdens. In this way you will follow Christ’s teachings.” (GW)
“As holy people whom God has chosen and loved, be sympathetic, kind, humble, gentle, and patient.” (GW)
2. You CANT learn LOVE w/o being around different people!
“If one part of the body suffers, all the other parts suffer with it.”
3. Practicing LOVE is called “fellowship”
“They joined with other believers in fellowship...”(NLT)
(TEV)
“They were like family to each other...” (CEV)
“Let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds.” (NIV)
Many ways- your spiritual family can be closer!
“I want us to help each other with the faith we have. Your faith will help me, and my faith will help you.” (NCV)
“They committed themselves to life together...” (Mes)
Love isn’t a feeling. Love is a commitment! A choice
3. WE EAT TOGETHER! (the fellowship of food!)
“They shared in fellowship meals...” (TEV) “broke bread”
Notice: Jesus often taught while walking or eating!
“They ate meals together in their homes, eating with great
joy and generosity...”
4. WE PRAY FOR EACH OTHER
“They spent time praying together” (NCV)
There is additional power in group prayer!
(screen) “I tell you that if two of you on earth agree to ask for something in prayer, it will be done for you by my Father in heaven.” (write) Pray WITH & FOR
5. WE ENCOURAGE AND HELP EACH OTHER
We practice unselfishness in practical ways.
Support each other in times of need
“They shared everything with each other... and helped each
other when anyone in the group had a need…”
bring a meal.. do an errand.. take to hospital...watch kids
“God has given each of you some special abilities; be sure to use them to help each other.” (LB)
