Uncle Bobby losing his wife to his best friend. His daughter Amanda calling his former best friend “Dad”.
Betrayal will happen to us. How do we respond to it?
Can you trust a God who allows you to be betrayed?
Matthew 26:46–56 NASB95
46 “Get up, let us be going; behold, the one who betrays Me is at hand!” 47 While He was still speaking, behold, Judas, one of the twelve, came up accompanied by a large crowd with swords and clubs, who came from the chief priests and elders of the people. 48 Now he who was betraying Him gave them a sign, saying, “Whomever I kiss, He is the one; seize Him.” 49 Immediately Judas went to Jesus and said, “Hail, Rabbi!” and kissed Him. 50 And Jesus said to him, “Friend, do what you have come for.” Then they came and laid hands on Jesus and seized Him. 51 And behold, one of those who were with Jesus reached and drew out his sword, and struck the slave of the high priest and cut off his ear. 52 Then Jesus said to him, “Put your sword back into its place; for all those who take up the sword shall perish by the sword. 53 “Or do you think that I cannot appeal to My Father, and He will at once put at My disposal more than twelve legions of angels? 54 “How then will the Scriptures be fulfilled, which say that it must happen this way?” 55 At that time Jesus said to the crowds, “Have you come out with swords and clubs to arrest Me as you would against a robber? Every day I used to sit in the temple teaching and you did not seize Me. 56 “But all this has taken place to fulfill the Scriptures of the prophets.” Then all the disciples left Him and fled.
Jesus, the King was betrayed in the most iconic way in history by one of his closest friends, Judas.

How the King Responds to Betrayal (47-50)

(47-50)
Matthew 26:47–50 NASB95
47 While He was still speaking, behold, Judas, one of the twelve, came up accompanied by a large crowd with swords and clubs, who came from the chief priests and elders of the people.
Matthew 26:4

His Betrayer (47)

Judas was indwelt by Satan.
Judas mean “praise” but has come to mean traitor.
Luke 22:3 NASB95
3 And Satan entered into Judas who was called Iscariot, belonging to the number of the twelve.
One of the twelve. Trusted position. Chosen by Jesus after a night of prayer.
Judas mean “praise” but has come to mean traitor.
Large crowd = up to 600 Roman soldiers + representatives from the Jewish high court + Jewish soldiers. Some estimate up to 1000 men.

The Sign of Betrayal (48-49)

The Bible Exposition Commentary Chapter Twenty-Three: The King’s Preparation (Matthew 26:1–56)

In that day, it was customary for disciples to kiss their teacher.

Why? The Roman soldiers didn’t know who Jesus was. Judas wanted to secure his payment. They would want the arrest to be as easy as possible.
Luke 7:45 NASB95
45 “You gave Me no kiss; but she, since the time I came in, has not ceased to kiss My feet.
Luke 7:38 NASB95
38 and standing behind Him at His feet, weeping, she began to wet His feet with her tears, and kept wiping them with the hair of her head, and kissing His feet and anointing them with the perfume.

2 Corinthians 10:3–5 NASB95
3 For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war according to the flesh, 4 for the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh, but divinely powerful for the destruction of fortresses. 5 We are destroying speculations and every lofty thing raised up against the knowledge of God, and we are taking every thought captive to the obedience of Christ,
The Bible Exposition Commentary Chapter Eleven: The Servant Suffers (Mark 14:1–15:20)

2 Cor. 10:3–5

The Act of Betrayal (50)

How the King Responds to “Help” (51-54)

Matthew 26:51–54 NASB95
51 And behold, one of those who were with Jesus reached and drew out his sword, and struck the slave of the high priest and cut off his ear. 52 Then Jesus said to him, “Put your sword back into its place; for all those who take up the sword shall perish by the sword. 53 “Or do you think that I cannot appeal to My Father, and He will at once put at My disposal more than twelve legions of angels? 54 “How then will the Scriptures be fulfilled, which say that it must happen this way?”

3 Reasons for not Advancing the Faith by Force:

1. There is a Penalty

2. Jesus doesn’t Need Us to Use Force

Believer’s Bible Commentary H. Jesus Betrayed and Arrested in Gethsemane (26:47–56)

twelve legions of angels (from 36,000 to 72,000).

3. God Doesn’t Want it That Way

Matthew 26:
Believer’s Bible Commentary I. Jesus Betrayed and Arrested (14:43–52)

(Ps. 41:9), arrested (Isa. 53:7), manhandled (Ps. 22:12) and forsaken (Zech. 13:7).

Scripture fulfilled:
Betrayal
Psalm 41:9 NASB95
9 Even my close friend in whom I trusted, Who ate my bread, Has lifted up his heel against me.
Arrest
Isaiah 53:7 NASB95
7 He was oppressed and He was afflicted, Yet He did not open His mouth; Like a lamb that is led to slaughter, And like a sheep that is silent before its shearers, So He did not open His mouth.
Abuse
Psalm 22:12 NASB95
12 Many bulls have surrounded me; Strong bulls of Bashan have encircled me.
Forsaken
Zechariah 13:7 NASB95
7 “Awake, O sword, against My Shepherd, And against the man, My Associate,” Declares the Lord of hosts. “Strike the Shepherd that the sheep may be scattered; And I will turn My hand against the little ones.
The Bible Exposition Commentary Chapter Twenty-Three: The King’s Preparation (Matthew 26:1–56)

In that day, it was customary for disciples to kiss their teacher

Fight or Flight are the 2 most basic instincts that we have. Jesus taught that there is a spiritual response that rises above them both.

How the King Responds to Injustice (55-56)

Matthew 26:55–56 NASB95
55 At that time Jesus said to the crowds, “Have you come out with swords and clubs to arrest Me as you would against a robber? Every day I used to sit in the temple teaching and you did not seize Me. 56 “But all this has taken place to fulfill the Scriptures of the prophets.” Then all the disciples left Him and fled.
Matthew 26:

Question the Accusers (55)

2 Samuel 19:4 NASB95
4 The king covered his face and cried out with a loud voice, “O my son Absalom, O Absalom, my son, my son!”
2 sam 19

Accept God’s Will (56)

It is ok to try and avoid injustice. Jesus did it.
Luke 4:30 NASB95
30 But passing through their midst, He went His way.
Luke 4:28–30 NASB95
28 And all the people in the synagogue were filled with rage as they heard these things; 29 and they got up and drove Him out of the city, and led Him to the brow of the hill on which their city had been built, in order to throw Him down the cliff. 30 But passing through their midst, He went His way.
Paul did too.
Acts 22:22–26 NASB95
22 They listened to him up to this statement, and then they raised their voices and said, “Away with such a fellow from the earth, for he should not be allowed to live!” 23 And as they were crying out and throwing off their cloaks and tossing dust into the air, 24 the commander ordered him to be brought into the barracks, stating that he should be examined by scourging so that he might find out the reason why they were shouting against him that way. 25 But when they stretched him out with thongs, Paul said to the centurion who was standing by, “Is it lawful for you to scourge a man who is a Roman and uncondemned?” 26 When the centurion heard this, he went to the commander and told him, saying, “What are you about to do? For this man is a Roman.”
How do you know when to try to avoid it injustice and when to accept it as from God?
If you have tried to avoid it and cannot, then you know it is part of God’s plan.
Believer’s Bible Commentary H. Jesus Betrayed and Arrested in Gethsemane (26:47–56)

If their cowardice was inexcusable, ours is more so. They had not yet been indwelt by the Holy Spirit; we have.

Since we do have the Spirit of the Living God living inside us, there is hope. We can overcome just as Jesus did even in the midst of the deepest betrayal or injustice.
