Opening

If you have been in church very long, you have probably heard the story of David and Goliath in .
I have heard this story over the years used in a way to motivate us to think positively about ourselves, to be confident. I mean we are told if a young boy can defeat a 9 foot 9 inch tall giant with a sling and a stone we can have the confidence to do anything.
I am not saying I don't agree with that, but maybe after this message today you will have a little bit different perspective while looking at this passage.
When I do a Bible study in the Old Testament I think it is a lot of fun finding Christ in the scriptures; or at least a picture of Him. I think you will find every story in the Bible is there to point us to Christ in some way some how.
When I approach this story with that in mind. I don't see this as a story of a young boy who overcomes his physical inadequacies, to conquer a giant . I see a picture of Christ who defeats the devil, an enemy who taunts us and wants to destroy us.

David the key character in the story was confident not arrogant

1 Samuel 17:28 HCSB
David’s oldest brother Eliab listened as he spoke to the men, and became angry with him. “Why did you come down here?” he asked. “Who did you leave those few sheep with in the wilderness? I know your arrogance and your evil heart—you came down to see the battle!”
He was confident because he had the power of the living God within him. He witnessed that power numerous times when God saved him from the attacks of lions and bears.
Jesus while on this earth was both humble, and confident, He was not arrogant at all. Being humble is about our ability to do something on our own, not our self worth or how we feel about ourselves.
The devil likes to make us think that being humble is being weak, and worthless. That couldn't be further from the truth. We should not think we are worthless, or weak. God thinks we are more precious than gold.

Psalm 139:13–15 HCSB
For it was You who created my inward parts; You knit me together in my mother’s womb. I will praise You because I have been remarkably and wonderfully made. Your works are wonderful, and I know this very well. My bones were not hidden from You when I was made in secret, when I was formed in the depths of the earth.
For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother's womb. I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well. My frame was not hidden from you, when I was being made in secret, intricately woven in the depths of the earth.
ESV
Luke 12:6–7 HCSB
Aren’t five sparrows sold for two pennies? Yet not one of them is forgotten in God’s sight. Indeed, the hairs of your head are all counted. Don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows!
Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? And not one of them is forgotten before God. Why, even the hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not; you are of more value than many sparrows.
In God's eyes we are worth enough to die for!
ESV
Romans 5:8 HCSB
But God proves His own love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us!
But God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
Fear is a lier! It comes straight from the lier himself the devil. Goliath was lying in verse 9 when he said if he is killed the Philistines would become slaves to the Israelites.
Goliath had no authority to promise he make slaves of all the Philistines, it was just a trick to make someone want to fight him, but if he had won I could almost promise both he and the Philistines would sure want to make slaves of the Israelites.
Satan is able to put the spirit of fear in us by lying to us. We need a relationship with Jesus so we can recognize when the devil is speaking to us, or if it is the Holy Spirit speaking to us.
David was not afraid. We don't have to be afraid when we have power from the name of Jesus, and the Power of the Holy Spirit with us.
For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but the power, and of love, and of a sound mind… Who hath saved us, and called us with a holy calling, not according to our works, but according to his own purpose and grace, which was given us in Christ Jesus before the world began.
- and
2 Timothy 1:9 HCSB
He has saved us and called us with a holy calling, not according to our works, but according to His own purpose and grace, which was given to us in Christ Jesus before time began.
2 Timothy 1:7 HCSB
For God has not given us a spirit of fearfulness, but one of power, love, and sound judgment.

17 Now the Philistines … Azekah, in Ephes-dammim.

1 Samuel 17:1 HCSB
The Philistines gathered their forces for war at Socoh in Judah and camped between Socoh and Azekah in Ephes-dammim.
Satan is always lining up in battle against God's people. From the very beginning of creation Satan was ready to attack. God created man and woman, and as soon as they were placed in the garden Satan was there taunting and tempting them to fall into sin.
Did this foil God's plan? No, nothing takes God by surprise; He has always had a solution for anything that Satan can come up with. Before He even created the garden for man to enjoy God already had a plan in place for the fall, because He knew it was going to happen.
1 Peter 1:20 HCSB
He was chosen before the foundation of the world but was revealed at the end of the times for you
20 He was foreknown before the foundation of the world but was made manifest in the last times for the sake of you
God was ready with a word for Satan as soon as the fall happened. says:
Genesis 3:15 HCSB
I will put hostility between you and the woman, and between your seed and her seed. He will strike your head, and you will strike his heel.
15  I will put enmity between you and the woman,
and between your offspring and her offspring;
he shall bruise your head,
and you shall bruise his heel.”
The Holy Bible: English Standard Version. (2016). (Ge 3:15). Wheaton: Standard Bible Society.
Society today is always ready to attack Christianity. If something in society offends the beliefs of someone other than Christianity they don't want to offend them. To be politically correct is the way society has headed. What happened to the good old days when we were not afraid to "offend" someone with the Gospel.
1 Samuel 17:2 HCSB
Saul and the men of Israel gathered and camped in the Valley of Elah; then they lined up in battle formation to face the Philistines.
Just as Satan is always ready to battle against God's people we should be lined up and ready to battle against any attack he might plan against us.
1 Samuel 17:3 HCSB
The Philistines were standing on one hill, and the Israelites were standing on another hill with a ravine between them.
The battle is between us and the devil, not between God and Satan. Don't ever think of this relationship of God and Satan as a battle where God is fighting for our lives and we just hope that God wins.
No matter what the devil throws at us is no battle at all for God, because He is in control, He is all sovereign, he uses everything that happens for His plans for our eternal relationship with Him.
Romans 8:28 HCSB
We know that all things work together for the good of those who love God: those who are called according to His purpose.
28 And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.
1 Samuel 17:4–7 HCSB
Then a champion named Goliath, from Gath, came out from the Philistine camp. He was nine feet, nine inches tall and wore a bronze helmet and bronze scale armor that weighed 125 pounds. There was bronze armor on his shins, and a bronze sword was slung between his shoulders. His spear shaft was like a weaver’s beam, and the iron point of his spear weighed 15 pounds. In addition, a shield-bearer was walking in front of him.
9 foot 9" tall this giant was! He had 125 lbs of armor, bronze sword, bronze helmet, 15 lb spear head. This must have been an impressive site to see, a scary site to see.
This is a picture of Satan himself, and he is scary if we try to fight him on our own. There is no way we can fight him on our own. He is intelligent, he is cunning, and he is coming at you with an armor piercing missile, the biggest spear head he can throw at you. The iron spear head weighed 15 lbs, and the shaft that pushed it probably weighed even more. It wouldn't have mattered how much armor a soldier would have on it would probably not stop a spear of that size.
We often try to go up against Satan on our own. Situations may seem small enough that we can handle them on our own, but when these situations are from Satan they are always bigger than we think. Why should we even attempt to do anything on our own when we have someone on our side that will protect us, because He loves us.
1 Samuel 17:8–11 HCSB
He stood and shouted to the Israelite battle formations: “Why do you come out to line up in battle formation?” He asked them, “Am I not a Philistine and are you not servants of Saul? Choose one of your men and have him come down against me. If he wins in a fight against me and kills me, we will be your servants. But if I win against him and kill him, then you will be our servants and serve us.” Then the Philistine said, “I defy the ranks of Israel today. Send me a man so we can fight each other!” When Saul and all Israel heard these words from the Philistine, they lost their courage and were terrified.
Satan is always taunting us. He wants to confuse us about our theology, he likes to insult us. Goliath was insulting the Israelites' socially, and theologically.
Socially he insulted Saul their leader ,their king. Saul was their king, and it says he was afraid along with the rest of Israel.
The devil taunts us into thinking we are not good enough, not smart enough, not able to do anything. In a way he is right, but what he leaves out is that with the power and the guidance of the Holy Spirit we are given the power and the knowledge to do whatever God calls us to do.
With that being said, we are not to pick a fight with the devil, we are to be ready to fight by preparing ourselves by reading and studying His word, we wait for Satan's attack, then we take a stand
Ephesians 6:10–20 HCSB
Finally, be strengthened by the Lord and by His vast strength. Put on the full armor of God so that you can stand against the tactics of the Devil. For our battle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the world powers of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavens. This is why you must take up the full armor of God, so that you may be able to resist in the evil day, and having prepared everything, to take your stand. Stand, therefore, with truth like a belt around your waist, righteousness like armor on your chest, and your feet sandaled with readiness for the gospel of peace. In every situation take the shield of faith, and with it you will be able to extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is God’s word. Pray at all times in the Spirit with every prayer and request, and stay alert in this with all perseverance and intercession for all the saints. Pray also for me, that the message may be given to me when I open my mouth to make known with boldness the mystery of the gospel. For this I am an ambassador in chains. Pray that I might be bold enough in Him to speak as I should.
The Whole Armor of God
10 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. 11 Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. 12 For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. 13 Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm. 14 Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness, 15 and, as shoes for your feet, having put on the readiness given by the gospel of peace. 16 In all circumstances take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one; 17 and take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God, 18 praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication. To that end, keep alert with all perseverance, making supplication for all the saints, 19 and also for me, that words may be given to me in opening my mouth boldly to proclaim the mystery of the gospel, 20 for which I am an ambassador in chains, that I may declare it boldly, as I ought to speak.
The Israelites outnumbered Goliath but were still afraid to fight him. Some of us are more ready to fear the devil than to trust God. This kind of thinking does not come from God. tells us fear does not come from God, but instead He gives us power, love, and sound judgement.
2 Timothy 1:7 HCSB
For God has not given us a spirit of fearfulness, but one of power, love, and sound judgment.
Satan, "the spirit of fear" can disguise himself as an angel of light fooling us into thinking that fear is from God. .
2 Corinthians 11:14 HCSB
And no wonder! For Satan disguises himself as an angel of light.
14 And no wonder, for even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light.
Some of the men in today's society are afraid. This spirit of fear has made a society of men who are passive. They let the wife take care of everything, paying the bills, disciplining the kids, leading the home in spirituality.
They are absent from the home. They may or may not be there physically but they are not there as the spiritual leader of the home.
We need men to step up and be men. We need men to lead the home. Too many fathers think they are the king of the house, and all they have to do is make a paycheck, come home, and sit around and play video games, and be served.
To be a leader you have to serve, not be served, you have to love, if it is done right it is a lot of work to be the "leader" of the home.
Too many Christian dads don't know what it means to be the leader of the home. They read where it says wives submit to their husbands, for the husband is the head of the wife, and stop there and think, huh I am the leader, I have a slave because she has to submit to me because I am Lord of this house.
Ephesians 5:22 HCSB
Wives, submit to your own husbands as to the Lord,
Sorry guys if you read a little further in verse Ephesians 5:25 it says to love your wives like Christ loves the church. And how much did Christ love the church? He loved us so much he died for us. It goes on to say that we are to become one flesh with our wife, that we leave our father and our mother, and that we love her as much as we love ourselves.
If we love her as much as ourselves that kind of leaves out having enough time to play video games, or deer hunting, or golfing, or fishing, because all of that is satisfying ourselves, loving ourselves, and our hobbies more than we love her. Kind of changes things don't it.
We are to love are families enough to die for them. We have to protect them from the lies of the devil. We have to protect them from some of the things they are teaching them in public schools, and on the television.
WE CAN'T JUST SIT BACK AND WATCH THE ENEMY TAUNT OUR FAMILIES FROM ACROSS THE VALLEY LIKE THESE ISRAELITES DID. WE'VE GOT TO GET UP from in front of the video games AND FIGHT FOR OUR FAMILIES.
The sin of complacency, the sin of passivity is just to mention a few problems we have. The fact is we all, men and women have some kind of sin, some kind of something we have to conquer. It might be fear, it might be doubt, it might be an addiction, whatever it is we see in this story so far that we can't do it on our own.
So that takes us to the rest of this story when David comes in. If Goliath represents Satan, who do you think David is a picture of ? Of course Jesus.
We cannot let the battles in our lives intimidate us. If we do, the battle is already lost in our minds. If we see the battle in our mind as Christs battle, and that we have nothing to fear because our battle is fought by Jesus, and has already been won.
1 Samuel 17:12–16 HCSB
Now David was the son of the Ephrathite from Bethlehem of Judah named Jesse. Jesse had eight sons and during Saul’s reign was already an old man. Jesse’s three oldest sons had followed Saul to the war, and their names were Eliab, the firstborn, Abinadab, the next, and Shammah, the third, and David was the youngest. The three oldest had followed Saul, but David kept going back and forth from Saul to tend his father’s flock in Bethlehem. Every morning and evening for 40 days the Philistine came forward and took his stand.
We know that David is a picture of Jesus in these scriptures. Lets take a look at a few scriptures to see it.
David was from Bethleham, Jesus was born in Bethlehem, David was a faithful Shepard,
Jesus is a faithful Shepard,
The Israelites were taunted for forty days, Jesus was tempted for forty days,
1 Samuel 17:25 HCSB
Previously, an Israelite man had declared: “Do you see this man who keeps coming out? He comes to defy Israel. The king will make the man who kills him very rich and will give him his daughter. The king will also make the household of that man’s father exempt from paying taxes in Israel.”
The victor of the battle against Goliath wins a bride. Christ's victory over Satan on the cross won Him a bride, you and me, the church.
1 Samuel 17:38–40 HCSB
Then Saul had his own military clothes put on David. He put a bronze helmet on David’s head and had him put on armor. David strapped his sword on over the military clothes and tried to walk, but he was not used to them. “I can’t walk in these,” David said to Saul, “I’m not used to them.” So David took them off. Instead, he took his staff in his hand and chose five smooth stones from the wadi and put them in the pouch, in his shepherd’s bag. Then, with his sling in his hand, he approached the Philistine.
David wouldn't take things of this world to use to fight Golitath, what he used instead was 5 small stones.
Jesus refused to trade things of this world for his heavenly place, He used one book from the Torah, one of the five books of the Bible to battle Satan when He was being tempted.
1 Samuel 17:43–44 HCSB
He said to David, “Am I a dog that you come against me with sticks?” Then he cursed David by his gods. “Come here,” the Philistine called to David, “and I’ll give your flesh to the birds of the sky and the wild beasts!”
David used wooden sticks to cast the stones at Goliath, Jesus used a wooden cross to defeat Satan.
1 Samuel 17:49 HCSB
David put his hand in the bag, took out a stone, slung it, and hit the Philistine on his forehead. The stone sank into his forehead, and he fell on his face to the ground.
David crushed the head of the giant with a stone, God is speaking to the serpent.
15 I will put hostility between you and the woman,
and between your seed and her seed.
He will strike your head,
and you will strike his heel.
The Holy Bible: Holman Christian standard version. (2009). (Ge 3:15). Nashville: Holman Bible Publishers.
1 Samuel 17:56–58 HCSB
The king said, “Find out whose son this young man is!” When David returned from killing the Philistine, Abner took him and brought him before Saul with the Philistine’s head still in his hand. Saul said to him, “Whose son are you, young man?” “The son of your servant Jesse of Bethlehem,” David answered.
King Saul did not know that David had been anointed earlier to be his replacement as King. King Saul could not defeat the giant, but his replacement, the soon to be King David defeated the enemy.
The Old Covenant did not fulfill everything we needed to be right with God, but the New Covenant completed by Jesus Christ defeated the enemy permanently.

Closing

You may be feeling like there is no hope for a battle you are in right now. You may feel like it is too big that there is no way to win the battle. Satan has fooled you into thinking that he has already won the battle. If you think that he has already won. You have to allow Jesus to take over the battle for you.
There is no battle too big or too small for our Savior. There is no worry about whether Jesus can win the battle or not, because He already defeated Satan on the cross. The most precious word we can ever hear is tet el es ti, "it is finished", the word spoken by Jesus as He died on the cross.
