Stern Preventative Warning – Hebrews 6:4-8 Three parts of the exhortation: Three interpretations of vv. 4-8: 1. A believer who comes under severe discipline from the Lord 2. A believer who loses his salvation 3. An unbeliever who mingles with the covenant community but never truly believes, bears fruit, and perseveres Textual analysis: It is IMPOSSIBLE in the case of those who… • ONCE have been enlightened • Have tasted the heavenly gift • Have shared in the Holy Spirit • Have tasted the goodness of God and the powers of the coming age • And THEN have fallen away To RESTORE them again to repentance. Three application points: 1. Don’t assume your salvation by association with God’s people. 2. Saved people persevere in faith. 3. Theology demands humility. a. b.
