Introduction

Key aim of Sabbath School
In 1853, Adventist Sabbath School work, the general equivalent of Sunday schools of other denominations, began when James White wrote the first Sabbath School lessons. It only a few years after the first group of Sabbath-keeping Adventists was formed, James White organised the first regular Sabbath School in Rochester, New York.

From its inception Sabbath School has focused on four emphases that are still prominent to this day:

A solid balance of these elements characterises the most vital Sabbath Schools around the world.
Teachers for early Sabbath Schools placed much emphasis on the memorisation of Scripture.
