FULL TEXT – GENESIS 37 – 50
TODAY’S TEXT – GENESIS 37 - 45
INTRODUCTION
l My little girl asked me the other day to tuck her in. I told her don’t worry, I’d tuck her in like I do every night but just not right now. She went to bed and tried to wait for me but she fell asleep before I got there but she knew that even asleep, I’d still be there to fulfill my promise to tuck her in. It occurs to me that God does the same for each of us. He makes a promise to us and since He cannot lie, we know His promises will be fulfilled. It might not be just when we want but it will be when we need. Here on Men’s day, I want to look at a man that was given a promise by God and how he handled it. His name is Joseph.
Joseph – Favored of his father (Gen. 37:3)
l So here we have Joseph, the favored son of his father Jacob
l Favored because he was born in Jacob’s old age to Rachel his most beloved wife
l Other brothers hated him because he was favored and born of Rachel (all had other mothers)
THE PROMISE REVEALED – JOSEPH’S VISION (Gen. 37:5-7)
l Always in fellowship with God
l Promise of being made to rule over his brothers
l Promise Delayed – why? IT’S A PROCESS
Ø God sometimes delays the fulfillment of His promise to us until we’ve been tested and gone through some trials over time not because we’ve done anything wrong but so that our value will increase. People have bet on us not succeeding… and God wants to show the world that as a child of God your value has increased.
ILLUSTRATION – VALUE OF A CHAIR
l Value > no value > more value (antique)
l Chair did nothing but remain a chair. Never turned into a desk or table.
l The test of time will increase its value
! JOSEPH’S BROTHERS (Gen. 37:8)
l God showed Joseph a vision of his future that he would rule above his brothers. His brothers became jealous and hated Joseph even more. Anytime we have a mind to seek after the will of God, people will get jealous.
l Mediocrity
l Same old same old / Status Quo
JOSEPH’S BROTHERS (CON’T)
l Those that are jealous are not always enemies. We can deal with enemies. Paul told us how to put on the whole armor of God that we may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil (Eph. 6:11) but what do you do when those that are jealous are your brothers?
Different mothers / one FATHER!!
l Likewise, today there is hatred and bitterness among us as God’s children because we were called to different mothers (baptist, pentecostal…) but rather than focus on who’s our mother, we should be saying who’s our father??
THE PIT – 1ST STEP IN THE PROCESS (Gen. 37:18-20,23-24)
l Sent out to his brothers
l Thrown in a pit
l His brothers thought they would be rid of him forever but the reality of the matter was that going down in the pit was another trial that took him closer to his promise. Sometimes God wants us to go through a release to gain an increase. Joseph would never have entered into the fullness of God’s promise if he had remained at home w/ his family but because he was released from his family, he was moved further along his promise.
ELABORATION
When trials come up in your life its not because you’ve sinned, its not because you’ve backslidden, its because God is taking you through a process of release and increase.
l Low paying job
l Unsaved nonworking man
l Unsaved unloving woman
l Living in your daughter’s house
l But baby, God has a promise over my life and this is just part of the process!
THE PRAISE – JUDAH THE INTERCEDER (Gen. 37:26-27)
l Out of all of Joseph’s brothers, the one that interceded on his behalf was his older brother Judah who said there’s no profit in killing him, rather let us sell him to the Ishmaelites. Everything God does it for a purpose and likewise, its no accident that God used Judah to get Joseph out of the pit because the name Judah in Hebrew actually means praise. Hear what I’m saying..
THE PRAISE (CON’T)
l The quickest way to get out of a pit is through the praise!!
l If you praise God in every situation He’ll see you through the weeping night into the joyful morning
l Praise & Worship is how we speak to the Master
l Church conversation (praise = talk to God/preach=God talking to His children)
l Example – Child wanting a snack
POTIPHAR’S HOUSE (Gen. 39:2-6)
l Joseph serves over Potiphar’s house faithfully
l Because he serves faithfully over that which is not his, God blesses him even further
l There’s a blessing in serving w/ a whole heart and not expecting anything in return.
l God’s rewards are always better than man’s!
l Example – S. Jackson teaching S. School does it out of her heart and God rewarded her w/ a beautiful new landscaped lawn and with a walkway she didn’t even expect.
POTIPHAR’S JAIL (Gen. 39:7-9, 20, ch.40:1-23)
l Potiphar’s wife lies on him and Potiphar sends him to jail
l Has he done anything wrong? No, but God will put people in your path for a season to further His plan for your life. No Potiphar’s wife, no jail, no jail, no dream interpretations and so on…
POTIPHAR’S JAIL (CON’T)
l Also, God has a mighty promise for Joseph and before he can walk in it God wants him to be broken, He wants him humble and take no pride in himself so that HIS GLORY can shine forth
l Gideon said that the vessel must be broken in order to let the light shine through. God needs a broken vessel, a humble vessel that takes no pride in himself to let His light shine through
! IN PHAROAH’S PRESENCE (Gen. 41:15)
l A humbled Joseph before Pharoah (verse 41:15) “its not in me”
l God had to bring Joseph through the entire process so that when his day of greatness came, he would not be in pride. He would not say, “I did this.”
ELABORATION
l Everything that you go through is to bring you to the place where you say, “its not in me.”
l When people say look at how many members you brought in, you say, “its not in me”…..
l God will take you into your promise where you will do things you never thought you would do but you will remain broken and humble because you know, its not in you but in God
SIDENOTE – OTHERS BLESSED BECAUSE OF YOUR PRESENCE
l Notice that God has in every instance blessed those around Joseph (Potiphar, Pharoah, brothers and the nation)
l When you walk upright in the eyes of God people who don’t even know the Father but treat you decently will be blessed!!
THE PROMISE FULFILLED (his brothers bow before him) (Gen.42:6)
l When his brothers came bowing before Joseph, they were hungry, poor and broke. This was their circumstance. Their perception was that this great man sitting on the throne might take some pity on them and help them. But then, when Joseph pulls the veil away from his face and reveals himself as their long lost brother, their perception changes.
! THE PROMISE FULFILLED (CON’T)
