Its not the size Its the perception
If a asked you if you believed you could walk across a 12 inch wide wooden plank for a distance of 20 feet without losing your balance, you’d say, “of course.” But, what if I put that same plank at a height of 100 feet over a shark-infested pool of water? Do you really believe in your ability to walk across that plank? It is, after all, the same plank isn’t it? But in the 2nd example, the stakes, and possible consequences of failure, have caused you to doubt your abilities.
POINT – If you can go so far as to trust God with the small problems such as a cold, then you can trust Him with the large problems because with Him its not the size of the problem that’s the issue, rather its your belief (faith) that He can accomplish what you need Him to accomplish.
David and Goliath
Point 1 – (verse 35-37A) (How you see the problem) The size of Goliath didn’t matter to David because His perception was the perception of a child of God with promises like “I can do all things thru Christ which strengtheneth me” and “No weapon formed against me shall prosper.” The perception of the rest of the Israelites was not heaven bound but was earth bound. They saw the size of the problem and it stopped them from moving forward for 40 days. Its not the size of the obstacle before you, its how you perceive it!
Point 2 – (How others see your problem) (v. 38) Saul gave David his armor but after trying it on, David said that the armor was too big and heavy for him and he took it off. Oftentimes, a problem that your facing cannot be dealt with in the same fashion as someone else dealt with that problem. Maybe the person next to you shouted out in frustration and anger. Maybe someone else called a friend or a family member to help them out of the situation. However, when your faced with a situation and you don’t know how your getting out of it, you’ve got to find a way to fight that giant for yourself!! If it means staying up all night crying out to God, if means coming to church and falling down at the alter, if it means fasting and praying for days…whatever it is you need to do to equip yourself with the whole armor of God is what you need to do.
Point 3 – (How you see God in the problem) – (v.45) God is the creator of the world. He framed the heavens, hung the stars in the sky and blew the breath of life into man that we might live. He is the author and the finisher of our faith. However, the one thing He won’t do is act in your situation if you won’t allow Him to act. God gave Adam dominion over all of the earth (Gen. 1:26) and we still have that dominion today. Therefore, if we want God to act in our situation, we must allow Him to do it and when we do, no weapon formed against us shall prosper! Look at verse 45 again, David says “You come to me with a sword and a spear, but I come to you in the name of the Lord of the armies of heaven”
And, once God is in the midst of your problem, you can rest in the Lord, rest in the power of His might and know that He is God and He can send the whole armies of heaven against that problem!
- You come to me w/ bills but I come to you in the name of the Lord
- You come to me w/ pink slips but I come to you in the name of the Lord
- You come to me w/ court orders but I come to you in the name of the Lord
- You come to me with sickness but I come to you in the name of the Lord
- You come to me w/ money problems but I come to you in the name of the Lord
Look at David and recognize that as long as you have God on your side and at the head of your life, no giant is too hard to slay, no burden too hard to bear and no situation too tough for God. And finally, the last verse we’ll look at is verse 47. It says, ………
When you slay your giant and give God all the glory and all the praise, you present yourself as a living witness to everyone around you to the magnificence of God the father and all that He can and will do for His children.
So remember, its not the size, it’s the perception that really matters. Give God the glory in this place!
