Basic Bible Truths: -
Threefold-Past, Present, Future
Past - From Sin's Penalty
(Romans 1:16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.
Acts 28:18 Who, when they had examined me, would have let me go, because there was no cause of death in me.
Acts 16:31 And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house.
Romans 10:10 For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.
1 Corinthians 15:2 By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain.
2 Timothy 1:9 Who hath saved us, and called us with an holy calling, not according to our works, but according to his own purpose and grace, which was given us in Christ Jesus before the world began,)
Present - From Sin's Power
(Hebrews 7:25 Wherefore he is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by him, seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them.
Romans 5:9 Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him.
James 1:23 For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass:
1 Timothy 4:6 If thou put the brethren in remembrance of these things, thou shalt be a good minister of Jesus Christ, nourished up in the words of faith and of good doctrine, whereunto thou hast attained.
Philippians 2:12 Wherefore, my beloved, as ye have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling.)
Future - From Sin's Presence
(Romans 13:11 And that, knowing the time, that now it is high time to awake out of sleep: for now is our salvation nearer than when we believed.
Hebrews 9:28 So Christ was once offered to bear the sins of many; and unto them that look for him shall he appear the second time without sin unto salvation.
Philippians 3:20 For our conversation is in heaven; from whence also we look for the Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ:
1 Thessalonians 5:8 But let us, who are of the day, be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love; and for an helmet, the hope of salvation.)
The First is immediate, secured by Christ's Death The Second is continuous by Christ's Life The Third is prospective at Christ's Coming
1. Deliverance from impending death.
It’s as if we have been stricken with an incurable disease, our death is imminent. We have no hope of beating this disease. There’s nothing we can do to stop it. We’re helpless. Salvation is our cure, beating that incurable disease and delivering us from the impending death that was looming over us.
2. Saving of the whole person.
This means that we are not just saved in a physical sense. We are saved in a spiritual sense. Our very souls are saved. Our whole being is saved by God.
3. Forgiveness of sins.
Forgiveness literally means to be “freed or released”. We are freed from the debt and consequences of our sin.
4. Deliverance from the hands of our Enemy.
Outside of Christ, we are easily manipulated and controlled by our enemy, Satan. God’s salvation frees us from the hands of Satan. He no longer has reign over us. We have the power to resist and defeat Him because Jesus has already defeated Him by conquering death and raising from the dead three days after being nailed to the cross.
5. Sparing of the coming Judgment and wrath of God.
The Bible tells us that all will have to face the final Judgment of God (Romans 14:10), but God’s salvation gives us freedom from worry about that day. We will be found “not guilty” of our sins in the eyes of God and thus will not have to face the wrath of God that will be poured out on the wicked and unrighteous.
One verse in particular really sticks out in mind as a vivid description of salvation. Colossians 1:13, “For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.” Salvation is about God rescuing us and bringing us out of the hands of our Enemy in the dominion of darkness and giving us citizenship in the kingdom of His Son, redeeming us or releasing us from our sin by forgiving our sins
Zachheaus
Luke 19:1-10
Seeing salvation through Zachheaus
I. Timeframe
A few days before Jesus is delivered up into the hands of the Herod to be crucified
Just entered into the town of Jericho outside of Jerusalem where His trial was held
Publican = tax collector, took taxes from the poor people to give to the Romans. Considered as low as a sinner
II. Key phrase – verse 5 “for to day I must abide at thy house.” Not can I or is it ok, Jesus says He must abide at Z.’s house.
III. Explanation of text
· Z. was a sinner sliding to hell on a greased pole; a publican.
· It was the power of the Holy Spirit that drew Z. to long to see Jesus
· Jesus drew Z. to Him just as He draws each of us to Him today
· Z. “received him joyfully” verse 6. He made a conscious decision to receive Jesus into his house and his life
· The evidence of salvation is seen in his repentence and promise to give back 4x’s what he had taken from anyone.
· Jesus proclaimed that salvation had come to Z’s house on this day (verse 9)
Ø What is meant by salvation?
1. Justified (acquitted or excused) freed from the penalty of sin
2. Sanctified (separated) freed from the power of sin
3. Glorified – freed from the presence of sin when we go to be w/ the Lord
IV. Point 1
· The only way that anyone of us can receive Christ is if Christ knocks on our doors for the scripture says that no one comes to the son except the Father draws him
V. Point 2
· Jesus doesn’t come to seek those who are spiritually healthy and need no repentence but He came to seek and to save those that were lost
VI. Point 3
· Salvation is our cure for the disease of sin. Its our covering to keep us walking in the spirit and not in the flesh. Salvation gives us a new home in glory!!
Picture, if you will, a businessman that you often have dealings with. Perhaps he’s your banker or your manager at work. I can see him now. Always wearing a newly laundered and pressed dark suit w/ a flat colored tie. He never seems to have a kind word for anyone and he’s always yelling at you. Personally, I don’t even think he’s that an honest a guy.
1. past – gained salvation / from guilt and penalty of sin
2. present – enjoyed salvation, peace from the daily dominion of sin. If we do sin, however, we have an advocate
3. future – from the presence of sin
