Sermon Scripture

2 Peter 3:14
2 Peter 3:14–18 NASB95PARA
Therefore, beloved, since you look for these things, be diligent to be found by Him in peace, spotless and blameless, and regard the patience of our Lord as salvation; just as also our beloved brother Paul, according to the wisdom given him, wrote to you, as also in all his letters, speaking in them of these things, in which are some things hard to understand, which the untaught and unstable distort, as they do also the rest of the Scriptures, to their own destruction. You therefore, beloved, knowing this beforehand, be on your guard so that you are not carried away by the error of unprincipled men and fall from your own steadfastness, but grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To Him be the glory, both now and to the day of eternity. Amen.
Review: to be identified with the Father by immersion into Christ death and resurrection and influenced by the indwelling of the Holy Spirit
2 Peter 3:1–2 NASB95PARA
This is now, beloved, the second letter I am writing to you in which I am stirring up your sincere mind by way of reminder, that you should remember the words spoken beforehand by the holy prophets and the commandment of the Lord and Savior spoken by your apostles.
2 Peter
2 Peter 3:1 NASB95PARA
This is now, beloved, the second letter I am writing to you in which I am stirring up your sincere mind by way of reminder,
salvation and redemption are different
Redemption -
apolutrosis - a price of release. A release usually effected by the payment of a ransom, or the required price. translates as “deliverance” or “release”.
Hebrews 11:35 NASB95PARA
Women received back their dead by resurrection; and others were tortured, not accepting their release, so that they might obtain a better resurrection;
;35
aphesis - is a release from bondaged or imprisonment which correlates with the verb form “aphiemi”, “to send away, let go”. ( uses it in liberation from captivity.)
lutrotes “a redeemer, one who releases, is translated “deliverer” in (redeemer)
Salvation -
sōtēria - “salvation” is translated as “safety” in Acts 27:34
Redemption involves a price paid, a transaction made. Salvation is to be brought to safety or delivered from danger. Christ redemption has brought about the path of salvation. Those whom Christ has redeemed are redeemed period, done, end of story. Now the word salvation can refer to various things and an ongoing work.
This means that I can write or preach to the redeemed, the beloved of God, and in my writing I can as the Holy Spirit does, express a desire for them to know salvation without that meaning that I am calling ones redemption into question. While our redemption is a fixed standing before God
Thus, you believe and be saved is different than saying believe and be redeemed.
God redeems or has redeemed whomever he pleases by His own sovereignty. And of the redeemed, beloved, let me tell you that He has known you since before the foundations of the world. There is no part of you involved in redemption. The moment that you add a single work, you remove yourself from the gospel of grace. Redemption opens the door to belief. Belief is evidence of the work of God already done in you and it is through that belief (faith) that you know salvation. All of these things from belief to faith to salvation are gifts of God.
But here is the difference… One may be redeemed, but not living in light of the fulness of salvation. Thus when we come to text, like 2 Peter, we must have good Soteriology (study of salvation) or else we run the risk of getting all arminian in our interpretation and catholic in our application of the text. Or let me put it this way, we interpret in such a way that it calls into question the finished work of redemption in a child of God which leads to the necessary result of application which is trying to firm up redemption through personal work or holy living.
The epistle is addressed to the “beloved”, that is the redeemed of God. God has purchased them through His Son and our Lord just as He has all of the beloved here who are born of God by His grace, and Satan Himself cannot remover on child of God from the hand of God and thus our interpretation should not either.
With that being said, Peter concludes His last words by encouraging the redeemed of God as to how to live in light of the fulness of their salvation. The Holy Spirit communicates to us, how through the assurance of His election, the firmness of His prophetic Word and the commandments of our Lord, delivered through the apostles, we can live in the safety of God and in sincerity of mindfulness of God in this present age.
In other words, you who are born of God, live dependent upon God and His Sovereignty. You are born of Him and thus you trust Him for what will happen (prophetic word) and thus you also trust Him for how you are to live now (His commandments). This is all based upon your redemption not causing of your redemption.
It is a sincere love which is the binding, the causing of our devotion to Christ. He first loved us, and so we now love Him. Our devotion to Christ, our Holy or sanctified living is not built upon what we will earn but from sincere love upon the revelation of who we are and what we have in Christ our Lord.
I don’t want to spend too much time on this, yet I also don’t want to pass over too quickly what is being said. You must study this beloved.
Tell me, do you know your Lord in this way. Do you know that He named you, formed you, destined you, redeemed you and called you before you ever called upon Him? You have been redeemed in full, made new, the old is gone. Right now there is not a spot or blemish upon you because you are cleansed by the Work of Your Lord and Savior Christ Jesus.
Your knowing of salvation (personal intimacy with), your bearing fruit of salvation, your growing up in salvation, your persevering in salvation (the deliverance form sin and of it’s consequences) is going to be found in your living in the light of it. “Work out your salvation with fear and trembling”. It is not to earn anything with work, but it is love He who is safety, to know that which is of Him, and to live in it. Salvation is there for you dear beloved, the blessed redeemed. The promises are true and the commandments are not burdensome. Oh that His redeemed would become mindful of this in these times.
Well that is where chapter 3 of 2 Peter (and so many of the epistles) will lead us. So that is our prayer that we pray through our Lord, that the Heavenly Father would through the Holy Spirit reveal to us, His redeemed, how we can live in the presence of His safety, and grow, living in light of the fullness of His salvation. - Amen.

2 Peter
Be Mindful - The way your mind (sincere, pure, of new creation - of unmixed substance) is stirred up, is by remembering and that remembering is that of Scripture.
the predictions of the holy prophets
the commandment of the Lord and Savior through your apostles
an inseparable connection between the OT and the NT
Our Spiritual mind must be immersed and influenced in Scripture
It has been said, “Don’t be so Heavenly minded that your of no earthly good”. I tell you beloved, not to by such a catch phrase of 10min devotionals. The scripture leads us to say, “Don’t be so earthly minded that you know not the goods and the greatness of Heaven.” Beloved, if you are to be heavenly minded then you must be in scripture, you must be doctrinally minded. If you truly understand Biblical Doctrine, you then must understand that you are an ambassador of Jesus Christ. Thus in being Heavenly minded, you must be doctrinally minded and the only way to be doctrinally minded is to live as an effectual vessel here by God’s grace according to His purpose. There is no such thing as to much doctrine. There is no such thing as loving or desiring Heaven too much. Just good doctrine and bad doctrine. - All scripture is doctrine. I say strive to desire all of the riches of Heaven even more, only do it with good doctrine that it may have a sincere and living effect upon you.
the predictions of the holy prophets
1 Peter 3:3–7 NASB95PARA
Your adornment must not be merely external—braiding the hair, and wearing gold jewelry, or putting on dresses; but let it be the hidden person of the heart, with the imperishable quality of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is precious in the sight of God. For in this way in former times the holy women also, who hoped in God, used to adorn themselves, being submissive to their own husbands; just as Sarah obeyed Abraham, calling him lord, and you have become her children if you do what is right without being frightened by any fear. You husbands in the same way, live with your wives in an understanding way, as with someone weaker, since she is a woman; and show her honor as a fellow heir of the grace of life, so that your prayers will not be hindered.
2 Peter 3:3–7 NASB95PARA
Know this first of all, that in the last days mockers will come with their mocking, following after their own lusts, and saying, “Where is the promise of His coming? For ever since the fathers fell asleep, all continues just as it was from the beginning of creation.” For when they maintain this, it escapes their notice that by the word of God the heavens existed long ago and the earth was formed out of water and by water, through which the world at that time was destroyed, being flooded with water. But by His word the present heavens and earth are being reserved for fire, kept for the day of judgment and destruction of ungodly men.
1 Peter
the commandment of the Lord and Savior through your apostles
Knowing
this first - not a word of sequence but of importance. Knowing this first of all.
The chain that binds you to God is your love for Christ
lust - desires of the mind…money, praise…ones own personal desires (whatever the root)
you don’t need any talent to make it rich in Christianity
There is depth in they deny the depth of the promise of His coming...
It is denial of the person, work and deity of Christ. It is denial of the holy communion and the blessed fellowship. The return of the Lord is the very basic fundamental of Biblical truth which everything hinges upon.
mockers - scoffers will come (not only is the time described, but also scoffers are defined)
in the last days
following their own sinful desires
lust - desires of the mind…money, praise…ones own personal desires (whatever the root)
They will say:
“Where is the promise of his coming? For ever since the fathers fell asleep, all things are continuing as they were from the beginning of creation.”
There is depth in they deny the depth of the promise of His coming...It is denial of the person, work and deity of Christ. It is denial of the holy communion and the blessed fellowship. The return of the Lord is the very basic fundamental of Biblical truth which everything hinges upon.
Epistle primarily to Jewish Christians
They deliberately overlook this knowledge that: (In denial of the future, they also deny/become ignorant of the past)
The heavens existed long ago, and the earth was formed out of water and through water by the word of God, and that by means of these the world that then existed was destroyed/flooded with water and perished. (2 possibilities…flood or gap theory…or both)
flood of Noah
By the same word the heavens and earth that now exist are stored up for fire, being kept until the day of judgment and destruction of the ungodly.
2 Peter 3:8–10 NASB95PARA
But do not let this one fact escape your notice, beloved, that with the Lord one day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years like one day. The Lord is not slow about His promise, as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing for any to perish but for all to come to repentance. But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, in which the heavens will pass away with a roar and the elements will be destroyed with intense heat, and the earth and its works will be burned up.
2 Peter 3:
Don’t Overlook This Fact:
With the Lord one day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years like one day.
Thought 1: The Lord is not slow about His promise, as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing for any to perish but for all to come to repentance.
Thought 2: In His patience the Lord is sparing you from the times and deceptions which are coming (v15).
The day of the Lord will come like a thief, in which
the heavens will pass away with a roar and
the elements will be destroyed with intense heat,
and the earth and its works will be burned up.
2 Peter 3:11–18 NASB95PARA
Since all these things are to be destroyed in this way, what sort of people ought you to be in holy conduct and godliness, looking for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be destroyed by burning, and the elements will melt with intense heat! But according to His promise we are looking for new heavens and a new earth, in which righteousness dwells. Amen.
2 Peter 3:11-
Application:
Since all these will be destroyed in this way…Question: What sort of people ought you be?
holy conduct and godliness
looking for and hastening the coming of the day of God (but…logical contrastive)…as though seeing it but looking past it into our destiny.
looking for new heavens and a new earth, in which righteousness dwells. (according to His promise)
new heavens and new earth (no definite article…take out a)
Thus you do (not you ought) but you do. If not then your operating by the flesh. The Spirit within you..the new creation is looking for these things.
new heavens and new earth (no definite article…take out a)
Namely - we are a people desiring to dwell in righteousness…thus...
Be diligent to be: Diligence is to be found in Christ, not in peace. To be found in Christ is to have peace. Diligence is always in knowing the work of God, by the Word of God, not the works of man. It is easy to doubt God. The Holy Spirit through Peter is saying, be diligent to trust Him, to know that His word will be fulfilled. See to it to trust in the work of God as evidence that the Word shall be fulfilled. The diligence here is not for works but for faith…(which works itself out). The emphasis of scripture is not what you should do for Christ, but what Christ has done for us.
found by (in Him) (locative dative - Greek) Him in peace
found by (in Him)Him spotless
found by (in Him)Him blameless
It is not that you should, but that you do have peace in God, spotless and blameless before Him, in Christ. You cannot engineer these things, Christ has done it.
Regard the patience of our Lord as salvation
The mindset of the apostles and to be identified with Christ even through suffering
Philippians 1:21–26 NASB95PARA
For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain. But if I am to live on in the flesh, this will mean fruitful labor for me; and I do not know which to choose. But I am hard-pressed from both directions, having the desire to depart and be with Christ, for that is very much better; yet to remain on in the flesh is more necessary for your sake. Convinced of this, I know that I will remain and continue with you all for your progress and joy in the faith, so that your proud confidence in me may abound in Christ Jesus through my coming to you again.
1 Peter 4:19 NASB95PARA
Therefore, those also who suffer according to the will of God shall entrust their souls to a faithful Creator in doing what is right.
Philippians 1:21-26
1 Peter
Be on your guard
so that you are not carried away by unprincipled men
They twist scripture to their own destruction. (destruction does not necessarily mean going to hell…it can mean a ruined life)
There are Christians who belong to God, who have lived a terrible life with no testimony at all, because salvation, deliverance is of the Lord and not of us.
Noticed it is prefaced with unlearned and unstable. If you don’t spend anytime in God’s word and you only believe what others tell you or what you feel, then their is no other word for you than unlearned. Personal experience with God comes from His Word, not from life experience.
so that you do not fall away from your own steadfastness
not fall from being in, but fall from trusting in.
Grow
in the grace of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ
in the knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ
To Him be glory, both now and to the day of eternity.
Dearly beloved, this entire world is living by circumstance. They are living upon ever changing shifting sands of desire, lust, and survival. Knowledge is an ever changing accumulation of information, all having no foundation to stand upon. This world seeks, strives to become greater, yet refuses to ever know anything greater than themselves. The world raises up creation, and willfully tears down knowledge of the creator. The rules of success change day by day. Generation after generation defines themselves by their own lust and seeks each after their own way. We beloved are swayed, to look at things from our own experience, desire and wants. We even pick out churches or activities not with the mind of Christ but for what suits us. More and more certainty is replaced with certain uncertainty.
But we beloved, we the redeemed are called to be
mindful of what has been, of what is and what will be. Mindful of the entire counsel of Scripture, mindful of the promises and the commands.
Knowing in this living and fufilled word of God is peace that passes all understanding, cleansing from all unrighteousness and deliverance from all condemnation.
Standing firm on the fact of the Lords return and our eternal dwelling in righteousness.
We thereful live mindful, knowing, and on the basis and full view of fact.
No one who lives outside of Christ can live in this way…mindful of God’s good and perfect will, knowledgable of the unfolding purposes of past, present and future, and secure upon a solid future hope of life everlasting, with peace, spotlessness and blamelessness as a current status before God.
We live mindful, knowing, and on the basis and full view of fact.
But we beloved can, and we must. For that is to live in Christ Jesus, and that is all glory and honor unto Christ. - Amen.
