Sermon Scripture
2 Peter 3:14
Review: to be identified with the Father by immersion into Christ death and resurrection and influenced by the indwelling of the Holy Spirit
2 Peter
salvation and redemption are different
Redemption -
apolutrosis - a price of release.
A release usually effected by the payment of a ransom, or the required price.
translates as “deliverance” or “release”.
;35
aphesis - is a release from bondaged or imprisonment which correlates with the verb form “aphiemi”, “to send away, let go”.
( uses it in liberation from captivity.)
lutrotes “a redeemer, one who releases, is translated “deliverer” in (redeemer)
Salvation -
sōtēria - “salvation” is translated as “safety” in Acts 27:34
sōtēria
Redemption involves a price paid, a transaction made.
Salvation is to be brought to safety or delivered from danger.
Christ redemption has brought about the path of salvation.
Those whom Christ has redeemed are redeemed period, done, end of story.
Now the word salvation can refer to various things and an ongoing work.
This means that I can write or preach to the redeemed, the beloved of God, and in my writing I can as the Holy Spirit does, express a desire for them to know salvation without that meaning that I am calling ones redemption into question.
While our redemption is a fixed standing before God
Thus, you believe and be saved is different than saying believe and be redeemed.
God redeems or has redeemed whomever he pleases by His own sovereignty.
And of the redeemed, beloved, let me tell you that He has known you since before the foundations of the world.
There is no part of you involved in redemption.
The moment that you add a single work, you remove yourself from the gospel of grace.
Redemption opens the door to belief.
Belief is evidence of the work of God already done in you and it is through that belief (faith) that you know salvation.
All of these things from belief to faith to salvation are gifts of God.
But here is the difference… One may be redeemed, but not living in light of the fulness of salvation.
Thus when we come to text, like 2 Peter, we must have good Soteriology (study of salvation) or else we run the risk of getting all arminian in our interpretation and catholic in our application of the text.
Or let me put it this way, we interpret in such a way that it calls into question the finished work of redemption in a child of God which leads to the necessary result of application which is trying to firm up redemption through personal work or holy living.
The epistle is addressed to the “beloved”, that is the redeemed of God.
God has purchased them through His Son and our Lord just as He has all of the beloved here who are born of God by His grace, and Satan Himself cannot remover on child of God from the hand of God and thus our interpretation should not either.
With that being said, Peter concludes His last words by encouraging the redeemed of God as to how to live in light of the fulness of their salvation.
The Holy Spirit communicates to us, how through the assurance of His election, the firmness of His prophetic Word and the commandments of our Lord, delivered through the apostles, we can live in the safety of God and in sincerity of mindfulness of God in this present age.
In other words, you who are born of God, live dependent upon God and His Sovereignty.
You are born of Him and thus you trust Him for what will happen (prophetic word) and thus you also trust Him for how you are to live now (His commandments).
This is all based upon your redemption not causing of your redemption.
It is a sincere love which is the binding, the causing of our devotion to Christ.
He first loved us, and so we now love Him.
Our devotion to Christ, our Holy or sanctified living is not built upon what we will earn but from sincere love upon the revelation of who we are and what we have in Christ our Lord.
I don’t want to spend too much time on this, yet I also don’t want to pass over too quickly what is being said.
You must study this beloved.
Tell me, do you know your Lord in this way.
Do you know that He named you, formed you, destined you, redeemed you and called you before you ever called upon Him?
You have been redeemed in full, made new, the old is gone.
Right now there is not a spot or blemish upon you because you are cleansed by the Work of Your Lord and Savior Christ Jesus.
Your knowing of salvation (personal intimacy with), your bearing fruit of salvation, your growing up in salvation, your persevering in salvation (the deliverance form sin and of it’s consequences) is going to be found in your living in the light of it.
“Work out your salvation with fear and trembling”.
It is not to earn anything with work, but it is love He who is safety, to know that which is of Him, and to live in it.
Salvation is there for you dear beloved, the blessed redeemed.
The promises are true and the commandments are not burdensome.
Oh that His redeemed would become mindful of this in these times.
Well that is where chapter 3 of 2 Peter (and so many of the epistles) will lead us.
So that is our prayer that we pray through our Lord, that the Heavenly Father would through the Holy Spirit reveal to us, His redeemed, how we can live in the presence of His safety, and grow, living in light of the fullness of His salvation.
- Amen.

2 Peter
Be Mindful - The way your mind (sincere, pure, of new creation - of unmixed substance) is stirred up, is by remembering and that remembering is that of Scripture.
the predictions of the holy prophets
the commandment of the Lord and Savior through your apostles
an inseparable connection between the OT and the NT
Our Spiritual mind must be immersed and influenced in Scripture
It has been said, “Don’t be so Heavenly minded that your of no earthly good”.
I tell you beloved, not to by such a catch phrase of 10min devotionals.
The scripture leads us to say, “Don’t be so earthly minded that you know not the goods and the greatness of Heaven.”
Beloved, if you are to be heavenly minded then you must be in scripture, you must be doctrinally minded.
If you truly understand Biblical Doctrine, you then must understand that you are an ambassador of Jesus Christ.
Thus in being Heavenly minded, you must be doctrinally minded and the only way to be doctrinally minded is to live as an effectual vessel here by God’s grace according to His purpose.
There is no such thing as to much doctrine.
There is no such thing as loving or desiring Heaven too much.
Just good doctrine and bad doctrine.
- All scripture is doctrine.
I say strive to desire all of the riches of Heaven even more, only do it with good doctrine that it may have a sincere and living effect upon you.

Knowing
this first - not a word of sequence but of importance.
Knowing this first of all.
The chain that binds you to God is your love for Christ
lust - desires of the mind…money, praise…ones own personal desires (whatever the root)
you don’t need any talent to make it rich in Christianity
There is depth in they deny the depth of the promise of His coming...
It is denial of the person, work and deity of Christ.
It is denial of the holy communion and the blessed fellowship.
The return of the Lord is the very basic fundamental of Biblical truth which everything hinges upon.
mockers - scoffers will come (not only is the time described, but also scoffers are defined)
in the last days
following their own sinful desires
lust - desires of the mind…money, praise…ones own personal desires (whatever the root)
They will say:
“Where is the promise of his coming?
For ever since the fathers fell asleep, all things are continuing as they were from the beginning of creation.”
There is depth in they deny the depth of the promise of His coming...It is denial of the person, work and deity of Christ.
It is denial of the holy communion and the blessed fellowship.
The return of the Lord is the very basic fundamental of Biblical truth which everything hinges upon.
