1. Walk by the Spirit
1. Walk by the Spirit
Conduct your manner of life in dependence on the Holy Spirit.
This is a command (imperative). It is the only way to live the Christian life.
We must acknowledge our need for the Lord’s guidance.
Make me to know your ways, O Lord;
teach me your paths.
Lead me in your truth and teach me,
for you are the God of my salvation;
for you I wait all the day long.
If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him.
2. Be Led by the Spirit
2. Be Led by the Spirit
If you are led by the Spirit you will be going against the flow of the culture.
What does it look like to be led by the spirit?
The works of the flesh are what we produce:
The works of unbridled desire: (adultery) sexual immorality (pornea), impurity (uncleanness), promiscuity (debauchery - no restraint).
The works of spiritual sin: idolatry and sorcery (pharmakia).
The Fruit of the Spirit
Works are what we do in our own effort, fruit is what the Spirit produces in us as we follow Him.
The totality of the life that the Spirit produces in the believer. It is not different fruits, but one fruit that is characterized by nine qualities.
Love - agape
Joy - no matter the circumstance
3. Live in the Spirit
3. Live in the Spirit
How?
Recognize your dependence upon God in daily life. Acknowledge it to him.
Follow His leading - Keep in step with the Spirit.
example: Israel at the Red Sea, - the people were to turn around and camp by the sea.
Then the Lord said to Moses, “Tell the people of Israel to turn back and encamp in front of Pi-hahiroth, between Migdol and the sea, in front of Baal-zephon; you shall encamp facing it, by the sea. For Pharaoh will say of the people of Israel, ‘They are wandering in the land; the wilderness has shut them in.’ And I will harden Pharaoh’s heart, and he will pursue them, and I will get glory over Pharaoh and all his host, and the Egyptians shall know that I am the Lord.” And they did so.
example Israel marching around Jericho, .
God produces longsuffering in his people as we learn to patiently trust Him.
