6 but showing steadfast love to thousands of those who love me and keep my commandments. 7 “You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain, for the Lord will not hold him guiltless who takes his name in vain. 8 “Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. 9 Six days you shall labor, and do all your work, 10 but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work, you, or your son, or your daughter, your male servant, or your female servant, or your livestock, or the sojourner who is within your gates.
7 Do not misuse the name of the Lord your God, because the Lord will not leave anyone unpunished who misuses his name.
The Hebrew word vain means empty, meningless, thoughtless, and worthless.
it means to use God’s name in a thoughtless and insecure way
it also has the idea of a storm that jumps from here to their and causes distruction
When God wrote the Old testement thousands of years ago he was not refering to the english use of a derogetory word
Taking it for a covenent puropse
Litterally taking his name
therfore taking his name in vain is more serious than just using it as a derogitory term or a curse word it is accually more about saying we are a christian and not living it out. The idea is commiting evil in God’s name.
The issue with the interpertation that it ias just misusing Gods name is that God could forgive any of the other 10 comandments such as stealing, adultery, murder, but he would never forgive someone who misused his name
That would render God and the 10 comandments morally wrong. but the problum is not the comandment it is the translation
In the hebrew it does not say do not take, but rather it says do nor carry the name of the Lord they God in Vain
The CSB which I preach from for example fundmentally misinterprets this by translating this passage “You shall not misuse the name of the Lord your God”
This is much closer to the original intent which is committing evil in God’s name and that God will not forgive.
Why not? when an irrligious person commits evil it does not bring God and religion into disrepute, but when religious people commit evil in Gods name they are not only committing evil, they are doing terible dammage to the name of God
An example of this is the evils committed by radical islam who torture, bomb, and mass murder all in the name of God do terible damage to the name of God
Aithiesm grew trmendsly after the 9-11 attacks on America by Islamist terrists
the most frequesnt attacts on God and religion are because of evil done in God’s name wheter it is done in the name of Allah today or doen in the past in the crusades in the name of Christ.
People who murder in the name of God do not only kill their victum they kill God too and that he can not forgive this is why the third comandment was placed do not carry the name of God in vain
-The name of God should be honored and protected. The Israelites were not to use his name for any idle, frivolous, or insincere puropose such as speaking his name in oth taking
12 You shall not swear by my name falsely, and so profane the name of your God: I am the Lord.
Liv 19:12
his name should not be used for selfish or evil puropses
20 They speak against you with malicious intent; your enemies take your name in vain.
11 “ ‘You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain, for the Lord will not hold him guiltless who takes his name in vain.
