Jesus and His Parents

Jesus grows in wisdom and in relationship to God

and 52
The Gospel of Luke 2.7. The Growth of Jesus, Son of God (2:40-52)

Importantly, these two matters serve as focal points in the illustrative account, for at issue here is Jesus’ remarkable understanding (2:47) and the implications of his particular relation to God

Jesus grows and is put in the same category as John the Baptist in .
Vs 40
Jesus grows and is put in the same category as John the Baptist in .
Luke 1:80 ESV
And the child grew and became strong in spirit, and he was in the wilderness until the day of his public appearance to Israel.
But John is not the Messiah...
But John is not the Messiah...
He must increase…I must decrease
Luke 3:1–3 ESV
In the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar, Pontius Pilate being governor of Judea, and Herod being tetrarch of Galilee, and his brother Philip tetrarch of the region of Ituraea and Trachonitis, and Lysanias tetrarch of Abilene, during the high priesthood of Annas and Caiaphas, the word of God came to John the son of Zechariah in the wilderness. And he went into all the region around the Jordan, proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins.
But the focus of John and of the introduction is the growth of Jesus and who he is becoming.
Summarizes the first 12 years of his life with one verse

Vs 40 - Filled with Wisdom and the favor of God was upon Him

This verse is shown with the story that follows of Jesus in the temple.
Mary and Joseph
Jesus really grew up…and lived in their house.
He was raised in a house committed to following God....
There is no indication that what they heard when he was born was continually repeated every year.
They had to wait and see how God was going to use their son.
- John the Baptist
- Mary treasures things in her heart
Wish we had more…about his childhood but we don’t

Vs 41-42 - Family Was Devoted to God and they Brought Jesus

They went every year....
According to Custom...
It was expected that you do this...
What is your attitude towards church?
Do you like being with your family? Or do you grumble and complain about going to church?
His parents were devoted to God

Vs 43 - The Parents Lose Jesus

Feast was ended…7 days
They assume he is in the group with the children
They went a days journey…20-25 miles
They went back…to look for him
This shows responsibility on their part

Vs 46 The Parents Find Jesus

Three DAYS LATER…find him in the temple.
Temple is a center point for the gospels...
OT GOD SHOWS UP IN THE TEMPLE
Jesus shows up in the temple.
Sitting among the teachers
listening and asking questions
Indicates a thirst for KNOWLEDGE
Vs 47 All who heard Him were AMAZED

this amazement is frequently the result of an encounter with the supernatural

Jesus is presented in a heroic way…almost mythological…which in the Greco-Roman world was what their stories were about...
The difference is that this is TRUE!!!!
He is on par with the teachers…speaks as one having authority
WHAT WE SEE IN THIS...
WHAT WE SEE IN THIS...
1) Do not wait to know the Bible…learn it and know it now
Examples of people who were faithful to God from their youth
David
Daniel
Joseph
Timothy
John
Christianity is not an adult religion...
BECAUSE GOD IS THE GOD ANY AGE
Teaching my kids the Bible…I want them to know Jesus.
Teaching my kids the Bible…I want them to know Jesus.
2) You may exceed your parents and adults in Biblical knowledge
My dad…knowing this thought it best to not give advice

Vs 48-51 The Response and Purpose of Jesus.

He is confronted by his Momma.
Why did you treat us like this?
Your father and I...
Luke 1:32 ESV
He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. And the Lord God will give to him the throne of his father David,
.
The Gospel of Luke 2.7. The Growth of Jesus, Son of God (2:40-52)

Who is Jesus’ father? To whom does he owe primary allegiance? Jesus’ aligning himself first with God’s aim comes to the fore especially through his use of the expression “it is necessary”15—employed regularly throughout Luke-Acts as an indicator of salvation-historical necessity

Luke 1:32 ESV
He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. And the Lord God will give to him the throne of his father David,
They knew this…but it had been 12 years!!!
They had to be reminded again that Jesus is more than just a boy, He’s God the Son!

Vs. 49 Why were you searching for me?

These are the first recorded words spoken by Jesus.

I had to be…I must be

Jesus was living in unique relationship to God as His Father...
Not everyone is born a child of God...
Jesus reminded us that we are by nature children of wrath
We must be born again!!!
The Gospel of Luke 2.7. The Growth of Jesus, Son of God (2:40-52)

Not even familial claims take precedent over aligning oneself uncompromisingly on the side of God’s purpose.

Jesus obeyed GOD FIRST and that was not sinful to do what he did.

Vs 50 - CLUELESS

They didn’t know and they had to see what Jesus would do bit by bit…they didn’t have all the answers or know what was going to happen.
That is how it is now…Jesus doesn’t reveal everything to us of what is going to happen
often we may be confused!!!
Vs 51 - He went down and was submissive to them
Last time we hear of Joseph...
Mary remembered this…treasured it but didn’t understand it...
Have something happen that was a lot more meaningful than you knew at the time?
Vs 52 - Summary Statement to move him to 33.

Application

1) Many of you were saved at a young age…praise the Lord!!!
2) Some were saved before your parents…don’t let that stop you from being about your Father’s business
3) Some of you are rebelling against your parents because you think you know better than them…You are not Jesus.
We’ve all been there.
The main way God get his voice into your life is through your parents.
God placed them in your life and even Jesus who made his parents…submitted to them.
4) God is the God of children, junior highers, teenagers, young adults, adults, elderly. Everyone.
Now is the time to know Him.
Know the Scriptures…know Jesus!
