The third commandment

remember the first two
You will have no other Gods before me
You will not make for yourself an image of a god
you will not misuse the name of the Lord
Exodus 20:7 CSB
7 Do not misuse the name of the Lord your God, because the Lord will not leave anyone unpunished who misuses his name.

I. You shall Not Misuse the name of the Lord

A. What does it mean to take the Lords name in Vain?
Many people think that cursing using the name of the Lord is breaking this comandment. However although that is not completly untrue, that is not the entire picture.
God wrote the ten comandments thousands of years ago, do you relly think that when he wrote them he was refering to the english use of a derogitory word?
Obviously not. In addition to this in the day that the 10 comandments were written no one would have even considered using Gods name as a curse word, therfore it would not be logical that this was the entire point that God was trying to make.
many translations use the term vain, when in fact as with our translation today you will notice that it is translated “misuse of the Lords name
So what does Vain or misuse mean?
The Hebrew word litterally means empty, meaningless, thoughtless, and worthless.
It means to use it in a thoughtless or insecure way
In addition it has the idea of a storm that jumps from here to there and causes distruction
Taking Gods name can be done in two ways
Taking Gods name can be done in two ways
Taking it for a covenent puropse
a. Such as swearing or making an oth on His name, there is nothing wrong with doing this as long as the oth is not broken, if it is you have broken this comandment
b. The name of God Should be honored and protected the israelites were not to use his name for any idle frivolus or insincere puropse such as speeking his name in oth taking
Leviticus 19:12 ESV
12 You shall not swear by my name falsely, and so profane the name of your God: I am the Lord.
Lev 19:1
litterally taking his name
litterally taking his name
a. When a man and a woman get married it is normal that the wife takes on her husbands name.
When Hannah married me she gave up the name Baum and took on my last name.
When we are married to Christ upon our salvation we become His Bride and take his name
Christian litterally means Christ follower
Therfore as we live our life, if we are not living it as Christ would we are misusing his name and breaking this comandment.
With this in mind, misusing God’s name is a much more serious sin than just using it as a dirogitory term or a curse word.
It is accually more about saying we are a christian and doing evil in the name of christ
The main idea is committing evil in Gods name
How does this play out
You say, Pastor I don’t commit evil in Gods name, maby not but do you use his name to push an agenda
1. What if we say you can not do ___________ Because the Bible says so even when it does not.
doing such is misuse of Gods name and is far too comon in independent Baptist churches
II. The Lord will not hod guiltless those that misuse his name
What does it mean that the Lord will not hold guiltless those that misuse his name?
-This means that God will take personal attack upon the breakage of this comand
If we intrepret it as it is in some cases that this is using Gods name as a swear word it would render God and the 10 comandments morally wrong this is because God does not take other breakages of the 10 comandments such as idolitory, stealing, murder ext.in the same way as he does just using his name improporly in a conversation
However if we interpret it correctly it is a different story. the Hebrew litterally says do not carry the name of the Lord your God in Vain
The CSB which is my perfered translation says “you shall not misuse the name of the Lord your God”
Exodus 20:7 CSB
7 Do not misuse the name of the Lord your God, because the Lord will not leave anyone unpunished who misuses his name.
This is much closer to the original intent of the passage which is committing evil in Gods name. This is what God take personal attack of
This is much closer to the original intent of the passage which is committing evil in Gods name. This is what God will not forgive
-Don’t misunderstand me all sin is a personal attack on God, but this passage makes it clear that the misuse of Gods name is of higher attack
You ask why, Why is this sin a bigger deal to God than all the others
When someone that does not claim God commits evil it does not bring God into any disagreement.
However when a a “religious” person commits evil in Gods name they are not only committing evil, they are doing terible damage to the name of God.
However when a a “religious” person commits evil in Gods name they are not only committing evil, they are doing terible damage to the name of God.
A example of this today is what the radical islamic terists are doing. They are committing mass distruction all in the name of “God”
post 9-11 aithiesim saw tremendous growth, largely in part to the evil being committed in the name of “God”
The biggist attacks on God and religion are because of evil done in Gods name weather it is done today in the name of Alla or done in the past during the crusades in the name of Christ.
Please do not misunderstand me I am not equating ALLA with God they are not the same God and only the God of the Bible is the one true God. but to many unbelievers they are the same and thus create the same issue.
Please do not misunderstand me I am not equating ALLA with God they are not the same God and only the God of the Bible is the one true God. but to many unbelievers they are the same and thus create the same issue.
People who Murder in the name of God do not only kill their victum they kill God too and that this is why the third comandment was placed do not carry the name of the Lord your God in vain
People who Murder in the name of God do not only kill their victum they kill God too and that He can not forgive this is why the third comandment was placed do not carry the name of the Lord your God in vain
His name should not be used for selfish or evil puropeses
Leviticus 19:12 ESV
12 You shall not swear by my name falsely, and so profane the name of your God: I am the Lord.
His name should not be used for selfish or evil puropeses
Psalm 139:20 CSB
