LAST WEEK

We looked at the details of the Crucifixion
We looked at Simon of Cyrene’s participation in the whole thing
We saw the Jewish Leadership were set on making a mockery of the Jewish Messiah

THIS WEEK

We are going to look at the Spiritual Implications of the Cross

HAVE YOU EVER ASKED YOURSELF:

Why did Jesus have to die the way He did?
Why did the Father abandon the Son?
Was the cross enough?
TURN TO
Matthew 27:45–66 NKJV
45 Now from the sixth hour until the ninth hour there was darkness over all the land. 46 And about the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, “Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani?” that is, “My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?” 47 Some of those who stood there, when they heard that, said, “This Man is calling for Elijah!” 48 Immediately one of them ran and took a sponge, filled it with sour wine and put it on a reed, and offered it to Him to drink. 49 The rest said, “Let Him alone; let us see if Elijah will come to save Him.” 50 And Jesus cried out again with a loud voice, and yielded up His spirit. 51 Then, behold, the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom; and the earth quaked, and the rocks were split, 52 and the graves were opened; and many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised; 53 and coming out of the graves after His resurrection, they went into the holy city and appeared to many. 54 So when the centurion and those with him, who were guarding Jesus, saw the earthquake and the things that had happened, they feared greatly, saying, “Truly this was the Son of God!” 55 And many women who followed Jesus from Galilee, ministering to Him, were there looking on from afar, 56 among whom were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James and Joses, and the mother of Zebedee’s sons. 57 Now when evening had come, there came a rich man from Arimathea, named Joseph, who himself had also become a disciple of Jesus. 58 This man went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. Then Pilate commanded the body to be given to him. 59 When Joseph had taken the body, he wrapped it in a clean linen cloth, 60 and laid it in his new tomb which he had hewn out of the rock; and he rolled a large stone against the door of the tomb, and departed. 61 And Mary Magdalene was there, and the other Mary, sitting opposite the tomb. 62 On the next day, which followed the Day of Preparation, the chief priests and Pharisees gathered together to Pilate, 63 saying, “Sir, we remember, while He was still alive, how that deceiver said, ‘After three days I will rise.’ 64 Therefore command that the tomb be made secure until the third day, lest His disciples come by night and steal Him away, and say to the people, ‘He has risen from the dead.’ So the last deception will be worse than the first.” 65 Pilate said to them, “You have a guard; go your way, make it as secure as you know how.” 66 So they went and made the tomb secure, sealing the stone and setting the guard.
PRAY
Matthew 27:45-
Matthew 27:45–46 NKJV
45 Now from the sixth hour until the ninth hour there was darkness over all the land. 46 And about the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, “Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani?” that is, “My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?”
AS JESUS HUNG ON THE CROSS
DARKNESS FELL OVER THE LAND FROM 3PM-6PM
AT 6PM SOMETHING HAPPENED
Jesus cried out with a loud voice
My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?”
It was the voice of desperation
It was the voice of abandonment
it was the voice of a broken relationship
A broken friendship
A broken Father/Son bond
Jesus, upon quoting , is stating the reality of the current situation
For His entire life, all Jesus knew was “life with God’
His entire life was an independent trust of the process
While experiencing a comfort that only God’s presence can bring
It would be this balance of living in the frailty of humanity
While knowing that His Eternal Worth is Kingly
He would feel the pain, sorrow, and nature of being Human
While performing the miraculous
His entire life, He participated in all that God had for Him
He would say things like
My food is to do the Will of Him who sent me.
To finish what He began
I and my Father are One
He wished that His Church would have the same type of Unity as he and the Father had
John 17:20–21 NKJV
20 “I do not pray for these alone, but also for those who will believe in Me through their word; 21 that they all may be one, as You, Father, are in Me, and I in You; that they also may be one in Us, that the world may believe that You sent Me.
THIS IS HOW CLOSE JESUS AND THE FATHER WERE
YET AT THE PINNACLE OF HIS MINISTRY
WHEN JESUS WAS AT HIS GREATEST NEED FOR THE COMFORT OF THE FATHER
THE FATHER BREAKS THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN HIM AND THE SON
WHY?
WHY WOULD THE FATHER FORSAKE THE SON?
Church, this is Doctrinal Core
This cannot be taken lightly
This cannot be negotiated
This is real, raw, and a glimpse of what it took to make Salvation attainable.
SO WHY THE NEED TO SEPARATE?
2 Corinthians 5:21 NKJV
21 For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.
CHURCH
Without this separation, there is no Salvation
Because without a Holy Standard and a Sinful Self-Recognition, there is no need for Salvation
That is to say
1 Corinthians 5:21
We must recognize that God Alone is Holy and that Humanity is Sinful
Because He is perpetually Holy
He and Sin can never Cohabitate
The Holy and the Sinful can never coexist
John 1:5 NKJV
5 And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.
In the Bible there is always a contrast between
1 Timothy 6:11 NKJV
11 But you, O man of God, flee these things and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, gentleness.
Light & Darkness
Good & Evil
God & Man
Holy & Sinful
When we recognize the difference between us and God, we can fully understand what Paul said to the Corinthians in 2 Cor 5:21
FOR HE MADE HIM
WHO KNEW NO SIN
TO BE SIN FOR US
THAT WE MIGHT BECOME
THE RIGHTEOUSNESS OF GOD IN HIM
This means, that in order for us to participate and have a relationship with God
We must first agree with the “How”
Because apart from Jesus, there isn’t a way to accomplish this
Jesus on the Cross, took on the identity of a Sinner
He who was sinless became sinful
He who was innocent became guilty
He who never enjoyed the pleasures of sin, tasted the penalty of sin
He was numbered among the transgressors.
In looking at the blueprint of Salvation
The Father and the Son were fully aware of what was going to happen
I believe that this statement
Eli Eli lama Sabachtani
Is a cry that reveals the reality of being separated from the Father
It is a hellish statement
A statement that describes what it feels like to be separated from God’s presence
Jesus is not just stating the reality of God’s absence
But the reality of God’s departure
This is something that is very hard for the prodigal
WHY?
Because God’s Spirit will never cease pursuing the heart of man
His Spirit, by definition, will continue to convict of sin righteousness and judgement
His Spirit, will continue testifying of the necessity of Jesus
But, there is a day that is marked as the day where the Spirit of God will stop striving with man
Genesis 6:3 NKJV
3 And the Lord said, “My Spirit shall not strive with man forever, for he is indeed flesh; yet his days shall be one hundred and twenty years.”
Once those days are fulfilled, and man has forever pushed against what God has to offer
He will, like Jesus, know what its like to be forsaken by God
He will also, like Jesus, know what its like to be godless.
He will also, like Jesus, know what its like to feel utter separation from God.
AFTER CRYING OUT
AFTER FEELING THE UTTER SEPARATION
CHECK OUT WHAT HAPPENS
Matthew 27:50–56 NKJV
50 And Jesus cried out again with a loud voice, and yielded up His spirit.
Matthew 27:50-
JESUS CRIED OUT AGAIN
HE FOLLOWS THE DEFEATED STATEMENT IN VERSE 46
WITH A STATEMENT THAT WAS SUBTLE YET VICTORIOUS
John 19:30 NKJV
30 So when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, “It is finished!” And bowing His head, He gave up His spirit.
HE SAID TETELASTI
IT IS FINISHED
IN HIS DEATH, IN HIS SEPARATION FROM GOD, HE WAS FAITHFUL TO THE WILL OF GOD
HE KNEW WHAT HE HAD ACCOMPLISHED
IT WAS AT THIS POINT THAT GOD THE FATHER BEGINS TO CO-SIGN WHAT JESUS HAD DONE
Matthew 27:57–66 NKJV
