Verse 25
“Who are you?” they asked.
“Just what I have been claiming all along,” Jesus replied.
YOU is emphatic so the question is a challenge: WHO DO YOU THINK YOU ARE?
This is asked:
tauntingly
asked without desire to be instructed
coming in the context of Jesus’ words about their sins, probably done in anger
evidence was given yet the evidence was rejected
Jesus’ response in verse 25b:
Some say this is difficult to translate
“Just what I have been claiming all along”
KJV “Even the same that I said unto you from the Beginning”
Jesus was consistent from the beginning
publically declared who He was
Son of man 5:27
Sent by God 5:23-30; 36-38; 7:16;26-29, 33
Son of God 5:25-26
yet His opponents rejected this claim
the word for beginning here is ARCHE
Wives, submit to your husbands, as is fitting in the Lord.
And he is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning and the firstborn from among the dead, so that in everything he might have the supremacy.
REvelatoin
“I am the Alpha and the Omega,” says the Lord God, “who is, and who was, and who is to come, the Almighty.”
Revelation
He said to me: “It is done. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End. To him who is thirsty I will give to drink without cost from the spring of the water of life.
Who has done this and carried it through,
calling forth the generations from the beginning?
I, the Lord—with the first of them
and with the last—I am he.”
Verse 26
“I have much to say in judgment of you. But he who sent me is reliable, and what I have heard from him I tell the world.”
More judgment to come
Jesus supposes His accusations of them
He had many more things to charge them with and much more evidence to press on them
What Jesus discovers about our sin is that there is more in that he searches the heart and still can judge us greater
This then is how we know that we belong to the truth, and how we set our hearts at rest in his presence whenever our hearts condemn us. For God is greater than our hearts, and he knows everything.
1 John 3:
God reserves to give complete damnation against us
“Have I not kept this in reserve
and sealed it in my vaults?
More judgement takes away from Jesus’ true mission: The message of reconciliation from God
The Sender is RELIABLE and Jesus is TRUE to His Father
He who speaks on his own does so to gain honor for himself, but he who works for the honor of the one who sent him is a man of truth; there is nothing false about him.
Then Jesus, still teaching in the temple courts, cried out, “Yes, you know me, and you know where I am from. I am not here on my own, but he who sent me is true. You do not know him,
The sender has a message to the world which the messenger did not alter or change it
to expose sin
to offer salvation
to offer eternal life
a witness to the people
Isaiah
See, I have made him a witness to the peoples,
a leader and commander of the peoples.
A faithful witness
“To the angel of the church in Laodicea write:
These are the words of the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the ruler of God’s creation.
Proclaimed the decree of the Lord
I will proclaim the decree of the Lord:
He said to me, “You are my Son;
today I have become your Father.
Psalm
Verse 27
They did not understand that he was telling them about his Father.
There is an example of satan blinding the minds of these leaders
The leaders did not understand the necessity of making preparations for the coming judgement
(what are the preparations you and I need to make for the coming judgement?)
They understood not and made themselves obnoxious to the truth
Verse 28
So Jesus said, “When you have lifted up the Son of Man, then you will know that I am the one I claim to be and that I do nothing on my own but speak just what the Father has taught me.
O Lord, your hand is lifted high,
but they do not see it.
Let them see your zeal for your people and be put to shame;
let the fire reserved for your enemies consume them.
They will know that Jesus is the true Messiah
That He did nothing of Himself, but did everything with the Father with Whom He is one
That He was not self taught, but taught of God
“When all this comes true—and it surely will—then they will know that a prophet has been among them.”
Verse 29
The one who sent me is with me; he has not left me alone, for I always do what pleases him.”
Christ had the assurance that the Father is always with Him (Presence)
“Here is my servant, whom I uphold,
my chosen one in whom I delight;
I will put my Spirit on him
and he will bring justice to the nations.
My hand will sustain him;
surely my arm will strengthen him.
Christ was never left solitary or weak
Christ had the assurance that He always pleased the Father
Yet it was the Lord’s will to crush him and cause him to suffer,
and though the Lord makes his life a guilt offering,
he will see his offspring and prolong his days,
and the will of the Lord will prosper in his hand.
Isaiah
so I also will choose harsh treatment for them
and will bring upon them what they dread.
For when I called, no one answered,
when I spoke, no one listened.
They did evil in my sight
and chose what displeases me.”
Hear the word of the Lord,
you who tremble at his word:
“Your brothers who hate you,
and exclude you because of my name, have said,
‘Let the Lord be glorified,
that we may see your joy!’
Yet they will be put to shame.
Isaiah 66
Verse 30
Even as he spoke, many put their faith in him.
Jesus has this ability to draw people unto Him
So too, at the present time there is a remnant chosen by grace.
“Christ will carry on His work though the heathen rage.” Matthew Henry
This encourages me to keep on ministering and preaching the gospel, thought it may be met with much confrontation!
