It’s hard to be humble.
It’s hard to be humble.
Mac Davis
Oh Lord, it’s hard to be humble, when your perfect in every, I can’t wait to look in the mirror, cause I get better looking each day. To know me is to love me, I must be one hell of a man. Oh Lord, its hard to be humble, but I’m doing the best that I can.
My Grandfather
My Grandfather
Grew up poor. Farmed, saved, invested, became successful.
Unique sense of humility - He was the butt of his his own jokes. His favorite person to laugh at was himself.
One of his favorite stories was coming home for lunch and my mom and aunt putting hair barets in his hair.
His way of not taking himself too seriously.
For through the grace given to me I say to everyone among you not to think more highly of himself than he ought to think; but to think so as to have sound judgment, as God has allotted to each a measure of faith.
King David
King David
tells us that David was a man after God’s own hart. Best known as the young shepherd boy that slew the giant with a sling and a stone.
We make him the hero of the story. BUT
Listen to who Nathan says is the real hero.
“Now therefore, thus you shall say to My servant David, ‘Thus says the Lord of hosts, “I took you from the pasture, from following the sheep, to be ruler over My people Israel.
“I have been with you wherever you have gone and have cut off all your enemies from before you; and I will make you a great name, like the names of the great men who are on the earth.
“I will also appoint a place for My people Israel and will plant them, that they may live in their own place and not be disturbed again, nor will the wicked afflict them any more as formerly,
even from the day that I commanded judges to be over My people Israel; and I will give you rest from all your enemies. The Lord also declares to you that the Lord will make a house for you.
“When your days are complete and you lie down with your fathers, I will raise up your descendant after you, who will come forth from you, and I will establish his kingdom.
“He shall build a house for My name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever.
“I will be a father to him and he will be a son to Me; when he commits iniquity, I will correct him with the rod of men and the strokes of the sons of men,
but My lovingkindness shall not depart from him, as I took it away from Saul, whom I removed from before you.
“Your house and your kingdom shall endure before Me forever; your throne shall be established forever.” ’ ”
In accordance with all these words and all this vision, so Nathan spoke to David.
:
Who is the Hero in David’s story?
Davis supplied a hart willing to serve God and God did everything else.
When Christian men and women come to God with a willing and humble hart and use the gifts that God has given them, great things are accomplished for His Kingdom.
David accepts it humbly:
Look how David responds:
Then David the king went in and sat before the Lord, and he said, “Who am I, O Lord God, and what is my house, that You have brought me this far?
2 Samuel 7:
BUT HE LET IT GO TO HIS HEAD FOR A MINUTE.
Have you ever known someone that was so proud about what they bought with daddy’s money?
When we get proud of what we do for His kingdom, that’s what we are doing.
Then it happened in the spring, at the time when kings go out to battle, that David sent Joab and his servants with him and all Israel, and they destroyed the sons of Ammon and besieged Rabbah. But David stayed at Jerusalem.
2 Samuel 11:
He got a little comfortable didn’t he?
Now when evening came David arose from his bed and walked around on the roof of the king’s house, and from the roof he saw a woman bathing; and the woman was very beautiful in appearance.
2 Samuel
Some debate that this woman was ritually bathing.
No mention of sin, but look what follows.
“I have made a covenant with my eyes;
Why then should I look upon a young woman?
So David sent and inquired about the woman. And one said, “Is this not Bathsheba, the daughter of Eliam, the wife of Uriah the Hittite?”
David sent messengers and took her, and when she came to him, he lay with her; and when she had purified herself from her uncleanness, she returned to her house.
2 Samuel 11:
Could Bathsheba had said no?
Uncleanness: could refer to her ritual bathing, could refer to not want to looking like a sorority girl walking home in her party dress at 7 am on a Sunday morning.
The woman conceived; and she sent and told David, and said, “I am pregnant.”
2 Samuel 11:
David sends for Uriah
Uriah said to David, “The ark and Israel and Judah are staying in temporary shelters, and my lord Joab and the servants of my lord are camping in the open field. Shall I then go to my house to eat and to drink and to lie with my wife? By your life and the life of your soul, I will not do this thing.”
Uriah was a soldier with integrity.
David keeps him a couple more days and gets him drunk, but it still doesn’t work.
Now in the morning David wrote a letter to Joab and sent it by the hand of Uriah.
He had written in the letter, saying, “Place Uriah in the front line of the fiercest battle and withdraw from him, so that he may be struck down and die.”
Now in the morning David wrote a letter to Joab and sent it by the hand of Uriah.
2 Samuel
Uriah unknowingly carried his own cross.
Christ knowingly carried his own cross.
Now when the wife of Uriah heard that Uriah her husband was dead, she mourned for her husband.
When the time of mourning was over, David sent and brought her to his house and she became his wife; then she bore him a son. But the thing that David had done was evil in the sight of the Lord.
Worried about it.
Convinces himself he had gotten away with.
Here comes Nathan
Then the Lord sent Nathan to David. And he came to him and said,
“There were two men in one city, the one rich and the other poor.
“The rich man had a great many flocks and herds.
“But the poor man had nothing except one little ewe lamb
Which he bought and nourished;
And it grew up together with him and his children.
It would eat of his bread and drink of his cup and lie in his bosom,
And was like a daughter to him.
“Now a traveler came to the rich man,
And he was unwilling to take from his own flock or his own herd,
To prepare for the wayfarer who had come to him;
Rather he took the poor man’s ewe lamb and prepared it for the man who had come to him.”
Then David’s anger burned greatly against the man, and he said to Nathan, “As the Lord lives, surely the man who has done this deserves to die.
“He must make restitution for the lamb fourfold, because he did this thing and had no compassion.”
Nathan then said to David, “You are the man! Thus says the Lord God of Israel, ‘It is I who anointed you king over Israel and it is I who delivered you from the hand of Saul.
‘I also gave you your master’s house and your master’s wives into your care, and I gave you the house of Israel and Judah; and if that had been too little, I would have added to you many more things like these!
‘Why have you despised the word of the Lord by doing evil in His sight? You have struck down Uriah the Hittite with the sword, have taken his wife to be your wife, and have killed him with the sword of the sons of Ammon.
‘Now therefore, the sword shall never depart from your house, because you have despised Me and have taken the wife of Uriah the Hittite to be your wife.’
“Thus says the Lord, ‘Behold, I will raise up evil against you from your own household; I will even take your wives before your eyes and give them to your companion, and he will lie with your wives in broad daylight.
‘Indeed you did it secretly, but I will do this thing before all Israel, and under the sun.’ ”
Then David said to Nathan, “I have sinned against the Lord.” And Nathan said to David, “The Lord also has taken away your sin; you shall not die.
“However, because by this deed you have given occasion to the enemies of the Lord to blaspheme, the child also that is born to you shall surely die.”
2 Samuel 12:
Look how David reflects on his sin.
Create in me a clean heart, O God,
And renew a steadfast spirit within me.
Do not cast me away from Your presence
And do not take Your Holy Spirit from me.
Restore to me the joy of Your salvation
And sustain me with a willing spirit.
Then I will teach transgressors Your ways,
And sinners will be converted to You.
